Coming from former RARE composer, Grant Kirkhope...

"I think Rare have completely f#@$ed themselves. And - it isn't their fault; it's Microsoft's fault. They have completely ruined that company, and it makes me cry every day of my life."

http://gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=180789

I feel bad for Rare and Microsoft treated them badly.

I think that pretty much goes without saying. Kameo and Viva Pinata were fun, but since then they've been relegated to a Kinect Sports factory.

Wah wah, baby gonna cry.

I wasn't aware someone broke into Rare HQ and threatened to start shooting them one by one if they don't sign with MS.

Wankers.

Unfortunate, but that's what happened. These guys were in their prime back in the 90's, now they pretty much stick to Kinect only casual titles instead of flexing their creative muscles.

Typical of Microsoft. I don't think they even like games. This explains very well why the Xbox 360 is lacking games.

So lets take a look at that sentence....

I think rare has completely F****ED themselves...but its not their fault its microsofts... How exactly does this work? you did something to your self yet its someone elses fault?
Is there no such thing as personal responsiblity?

I won't have this argument with moron charlie sheens nor sheep Rare killed themselves and they did it all by themselves it wasn't nintendo's or Microsofts fault it was Rares and the owners that specifically sold their company at a high bid exclusively to another so they could get out 2-3 years later rich and fat.

rare had no choice in the venture the stampler brothers sold it to get rich simple as that. Rare was great then the entire golden eye squad left and they were pretty much useless they were taking longer and longer and more money was being pumped into them to produce results so Nintendo had a choice renew their contract and keep the 49% of rare they owned or buy more, or let them go they let them go look at the end of life of rare before they were sold the offerings were paltry examples of their former glory. Microsoft and activision were shopping for them Microsoft got em and instead of signing a contract and giving microsoft 49% they sold them selves completely to microsoft completely the stampler brothers no longer had majority control in the company they couldn't dictate where the company went within Microsoft...then they left not too long after and were richer for the fact and it was the same thing some less then stellar games released on the original xbox and xbox 360 and then wait, wait, wait till finally Microsoft delegated them to a lower position because they weren't producing hits and were taking longer to produce games.

They were releasing quality games even under M$. Live and Reloaded, Viva Pinata, Kameo, and Nuts & Bolts. PDZ was also well received, like it or not. Now they just make avatars and kinect games.

I was playing Perfect Dark Zero the other day on the third difficulty and I almost broke the disc.

"Yo guys, our cover system works whenever it feels like it, our controls are beyond repair, lets make one checkpoint per mission, some missions won't have checkpoints. That'd be brilliant won't it?"

People forget that Rare were crap years before Microsoft bought them. Star Fox Adventures? Mickey's Speedway? Banjo-Kazzooie Kart Racing? And then when Microsoft did buy them and they were given free-reign to produce what they wanted, they gave us what? Grabbed by the Ghoulies? A turd of a game. Followed by Conker; a fantastic game, but even then just a remake of an old game back from when they knew how to make something good. What about having early access to the 360 and being the development studio meant to produce its first lineup of killer games? Kameo (a good game) and Perfect Dark Zero (a turd). Most of them jumped ship to Free Radical and were working on Timesplitters long before Microsoft wrote a check. I don't doubt at all that Microsoft have turned them into a workhorse company now making xbox live content and Kinect games - but i think Rare's history is tinted with nostalgia and falsehoods of them being a world class development studio until the day Microsoft crossed paths with them. They haven't produced anything world class in almost two decades.

Everyone knew this, I don't know why devs even stick with MS anymore, they just kill them off or force them to make Kinect games.

You shouldn't have left Nintendo, you guys got what was coming. You should have at least went to Sony instead who gives great support to devs. Sony and Nintendo know how to treat devs and gamers right, MS is purely just about the money at any cost.

I think it's a bit more complicated then MS + Rare = DEATH. Rare still made cool games for MS. Kameo, Viva Pinata 1 + 2 and Banjo are all very good games. It's only in the past couple of years they are a Kinect/Avatar wh0re house.... [QUOTE="Ninja-Hippo"] They haven't produced anything world class in almost two decades.

Wait, what? Two decades ago = 1992... so none of their dozen+ awesome N64 games count?
