People forget that Rare started falling about before Microsoft picked them up. Microsoft didn't ruin them, their inconsistency did.

[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"]Even from the horses mouth and u still dont accept it M$ could come tomorrow and say "We hate gaming and we want to destroy it and in the process we will laugh at you dumbasses". And lems will find a way to defend them.So lets take a look at that sentence....

I think rare has completely F****ED themselves...but its not their fault its microsofts... How exactly does this work? you did something to your self yet its someone elses fault?
Is there no such thing as personal responsiblity?
I won't have this argument with moron charlie sheens nor sheep Rare killed themselves and they did it all by themselves it wasn't nintendo's or Microsofts fault it was Rares and the owners that specifically sold their company at a high bid exclusively to another so they could get out 2-3 years later rich and fat.
COme on man. All three of the console makers have good and bad points. Picking any one of the 3 and yelling "THEY ARE DOOMING US ALL!!!" is just silly propaganda. Whatever about their bad things, MS have done some great things too. WHat about, bringing great (or at least good/functional) online to consoles, pushing XBLA games as a whole new medium for indie/risky/out there games for a cheaper price, or bringing over tons of cIassic PC franchises like Bioware and Bethesda games?I've said it all gen and will keep saying it. M$ is the worst thing that could happen to this industry. Only lems would rather defend a company that rips gamers off constantly than actual developers who make games.

They can't, they have buyers remorse, they are insecure about their platform. He will never admit it to himself so he will keep trying to lie and justify it.
It helps them sleep better at night.
This is pretty obivlous all Rare does is make avatars and most of the oringal people left the company.
Didnt a lot of the original Rare team leave before they were even bought by Microsoft?
coolnessmancool
Yes. Many of the original Goldeneye team left to found Free Radical, which created Timesplitters. This was long before the buy out. However, the biggest loss for Rare was the loss of Nintendo guiding hand, which was what brought Rare to the pinnicle during their hey days. I mean, just look at what Nintendo done to Metriod Prime! With that loss and MS dominating ways, Rare quickly folded onto itself. Xbox days: Only Grabbed by the Ghoulies and a remake of Conker. X360, PD 0 = a huge BLAAAGGHHH! Kameo was good but you can tell something was mising..Viva wa highly imaginative but seriously, on the X360? And then there was Banjo...When everyone was clamoring for the old platforming Banjo, Rare gave us.....And that was that. Now Rare is buried in a ton of kinect casual crap! 200 some million for what? This is a Rare that STILL have amazing IP's like Battletoads, KI, Banjo (Proper Platforming one), Perfect Dark, Jet Force, and a very little known game known as Blast Corp (Seriously, try this game out! It's a huge huge blast! Litterally). But sigh, I don't think we will be seeing any of those any time soon!

exactly...and it showed with Perfect Dark Zero...
or star fox adventures which happened before ms bought them.
Argubly though, MS buyout just made the situation worse. Even PD wasn't up to par to Goldeneye in some respect because many on the team left to form Free Radical. After the buyout, there were supposed the last final exodus of the original "old" rare talents because they could not handle how MS is getting things done and their work ethics, which run contrary to how the Old Rare use to work and that bleeding really really showed with PD 0!
I'm confused even with microsoft rare made well recieved games. And also even before rare was bought out by microsoft they started going downhill, take responsibility for your own actions rare. It's easy to turn it over on someone else.

They were releasing quality games even under M$. Live and Reloaded, Viva Pinata, Kameo, and Nuts & Bolts. PDZ was also well received, like it or not. Now they just make avatars and kinect games. Those game were quality games, no one is saying that. However, even then, you can tell something tangible or intangible is missing from those game. That Rare polish, that Rare quality that we came to expect somehow is missing. A Classic example would be PD 0. Yes, it captured the "feel" of the PD universe correctly, but playing the game, there were none of the wow or pazzaz factor that we felt when playing Goldeneye or the original PD. It's missing, and the game sometime felt stilted and jaded, as if they just tagged some generic level design onto the game and call it a day. That would never have happened under the old Rare. Same goes with Viva and the rest. And it showed in the sales.
And now MS just keep Rare as a Kinect developer and we will never see the Old Rare again and who's fault is that? Everyone has different opinions but one things for sure, we will never see any of those great IP's again.
People forget that Rare were crap years before Microsoft bought them. Star Fox Adventures? Mickey's Speedway? Banjo-Kazzooie Kart Racing? And then when Microsoft did buy them and they were given free-reign to produce what they wanted, they gave us what? Grabbed by the Ghoulies? A turd of a game. Followed by Conker; a fantastic game, but even then just a remake of an old game back from when they knew how to make something good. What about having early access to the 360 and being the development studio meant to produce its first lineup of killer games? Kameo (a good game) and Perfect Dark Zero (a turd). Most of them jumped ship to Free Radical and were working on Timesplitters long before Microsoft wrote a check. I don't doubt at all that Microsoft have turned them into a workhorse company now making xbox live content and Kinect games - but i think Rare's history is tinted with nostalgia and falsehoods of them being a world class development studio until the day Microsoft crossed paths with them. They haven't produced anything world class in almost two decades. Ninja-Hippo
^This, though I wouldn't dare call the Conker remake a good game. Not even close.

Telling me.
They haven't been good since the N64 days. I got Kameo the other day from XBL (75% off) and it was ok at first, but it's just repetitive.
How many chances does a company need. THEY'RE worthless.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_developed_by_Rare
Look at the list of games they've developed. DIRECTLY after the N64, they've not released ONE great game worthy of the RARE name that wasn't a port.
Conkers Bad Fur Day on the N64 was the last one.
Kameo and Viva Pinata (haven't played) are good games at best with great graphics. PDZ was horrific with great graphics. They also released two games on the Xbox Grabbed By the Goulies apparently sucked (6.5 GS) and one was a port (CBFD Reloaded).
This is nothing but cow BS. What would you do if you were MS, keep pumping money into a company that's not producing the goods, or have them do something else.
The RARE we have now couldn't shine the boots of Sonys worst 1st party developer.
This is NOT the same company that developed the greatest games the N64 saw. Nintendo must be laughing their arse off at MS for buying them. MS can't even sell them, whose going to buy a video game company that can't make a good game.
If I were MS I would disband them and spread the staff out to other studios.

There's trolling, there's being a fanboy, and then there is just being a dumbass. Guess which one you are.
So is your faceWow, so was Rare full of a bunch of immature crybabies then?
Seriously, stop blaming your suck on others. The good devs left and that was BEFORE Microsoft got involved. Poor Microsoft is left with a bunch of crappy devs with a famous name now and after trying to make them a major dev in their arsenal they pushed them to the back after Rare repeatedly failed them. Any of the other 2 would do the same thing. It's called business. You don't sit there and let some ridiculous nostalgia blind you to where a dev currently is.
I would argue that Rare in general was SEVERELY overrated as a company too. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are flat out AMAZING games, but beyond that I never got into any of their other games. I think Perfect Dark Zero is a perfect (lol) example that Rare had no talent left. Good God I tried to like that game but it was AWFUL especially compared to how much fun the original is (Which actually buying the original for like $5-$10 on XBL was a MUCH better purchase than Zero)...
Actually, it was Nintendo who refused to buy Rare's shares that led to MS buying them. Ninty had about 49 percent of their shares invested in Rare and MS simply bought those two percent more...
Eitherway, I don't really care for Rare anymore (as my sig shows), I'd rather see the Stamper Bros. return to the gaming industry, founding a own development studio. They were the "brains" and creative talent behind Rare once.
Yes it's M$'s fault RARE produced Solid titles for the 360.. that no one bought. :|
Please take the nostalgia "stick" out of your mouths, wipe your chins and see that rare simply were/are pass their peek. Star Fox Adventures was not a AAA blockbuster and the first two titles THEYoffered M$ was Grabbed by the G and a Conker Remake. bu... but teh are the God's of Gaming.. Seriously!

SFA should have been released on the N64 under the name "Dinosaur Planet". The Xbox Rare games didn't match the ones they made on Nintendo platforms.
I agree. Rare is one of the most overrated companies in this industry's history.[QUOTE="themajormayor"]But rare always sucked so who cares? :/heretrix
Atleast they made fun, visionary and technically impressive games at an incredible rate.
Can't say that for many devs these days...
Damn, I couldn't have said it better myself. They had the opportunities to prove themselves but they couldn't step up. I'm sure MS had something to do with their suckage but I think that if they had some thing compelling going for them MS would support it. Look at Halo and Forza. But hey- it's easy to blame someone else for your own mediocrity- Shut up and go make some avatars.Wow, so was Rare full of a bunch of immature crybabies then?

In their time they were...ok. I rather liked Goldeneye and Perfect Dark- They just didn't scale well with the times. Not that I care for Microsoft or anything but isn't Rare's fault for screwing up? I mean why would Microsoft take the time to spend a huge amount of money in buying a game company and just ruin it? I'm pretty sure they wanted Rare to be successful in making good games for them. The problem with Rare was that their games were not as good as they were back when they worked for Nintendo and also their types of games don't appeal for the Xbox owners.
Who knows what would of happen if they stayed with Nintendo but ether way as of right now they are pretty much dead and they did this to themselves, plus the fact that all the major people there including the founders of Rare had all left makes sense of why they went downhill.

They completely butchered the awesome MP the N64 title had and replaced it with some stupid TPS mode that wasn't fun nor did it work properly. That and a lot of the vulgar language that made the N64 title so unique and awesoem was taken out.
It's vastly inferior to the N64 title. The only thing it yhas going for it is that it looks pretty.
Unfortunate, but that's what happened. These guys were in their prime back in the 90's, now they pretty much stick to Kinect only casual titles instead of flexing their creative muscles.

That is true, i pitty the artists in the team
If i worked as an artist there, having to make the silly avatar like graphics in sports games, after games like Conker or Kameo, i would want to kill myself
