I'm looking for some FPS games where stealthy tactics can be utilized. I don't mean games like Splinter Cell, where stealth play is forced on you, but games where, you can quietly knock someone off, without surrounding AI running around screaming and firing.

Would rather post 2005, but I'm open to older games.

Thanks.

If you want, i could give you a couple of advices on how to apply a number of mods to Deus Ex to vastly upgrade the visuals, gunplay and overall gameplay.

Ah, and there is the greatest Stealth/FPS/Adventure game ever made - Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, but i have a feeling you've played it...

Crysis because it makes the game easier but its more enjoyable/rewarding to not use as much cloaking.

Deus Ex is one of the best of those, but as for more recent stuff...hm, STALKER and Crysis did that well, and if you're willing to branch out into other genres, Dark Messiah and Vampire Bloodlines also gave you stealth as a valid option.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I've played a bit of STALKER, Deus and Crysis, but not a Riddick game.

Far Cry 2. One of the few games where you can incapacitate someone and the AI will try to help him. Opens up a lot of options for stealth fans.

The only real answer here is Deus Ex! It LITERALLY rewards you for stealthy play (a high-pitched sound effect and a little window popping out saying "you got awarded with bonus experience points") and thinking outside the box. Still, it doesn't force you to go all Sam Fisher-like. It's stealth gameplay is very much like Metal Gear Solid, so much so that I once actually paused the game, went to Google and found out the creators took huge inspiration from the original Metal Gear Solid-game for PS1. The only thing that's missing is the huge "!" appearing on top of a guy that sees you, everything else is almost exactly the same as MGS, except in first person.

You can choose to upgrade your character to be more and more efficient at sneaking; like silenced footsteps, having temporary invisibility (either for humans, or machines - not both at the same time so that the game stays balanced), you can buy tranquilizer darts for different weapons and upgrade their strenght too (so that it takes less time for the darts to have an effect and make someone fall asleep, for example). And/or you can choose to be better at hacking and security so you can disable cameras, turrets, hack computers to disable all security measures etc. easily...

Or make you a violent madman with effiency using shotguns, pistols and explosives etc... and just blow everything up.

All this even changes the story/plot, like thanks to your actions some side-characters may live or die, and you can learn whole new things about the story just because your character is different and you chose different actions. If you're a violent guy many people will dislike you, but if you're a nonlethal guy you may have new friends but some gun crazy people will think you're a sissy or something etc...

EDIT: AND OH YEAH, there's the High Resolution Texture mod for the game too, to make it slightly more pretty. And other graphical upgrade mods too. PLUS, I think some fans are currently re-making the game with CryEngine or Unreal Engine 3 if I remember correctly, so it will be reaaal purdy.

Crysis Riddick Hidden and Dangerous 2 Rainbow Six 1, Rouge Spear, 3 Deus Ex STALKER Far Cry Far Cry 2 Operation Flashpoint / ArmA / ArmA 2 Shattered Horizon (to a degree) Ghost Recon and so on. It's usually relative to more freeform or tactical bent shooters.

Thief also, they are really good games and cheap as chips similar to Splinter Cell it almost forces you to use stealth.

The ultimate experience you are looking for is a good game of cla$$ic Socom. Run n Gun players have ZERO chance against a team that is utilizing actual combat tactics, which often times have a few players doing the stealth bits.

The first Crysis can be played many different ways. Stealth is a very viable option in most cases. It's fun trying to retry different levels and play them different ways. Go out guns a blazin' or sneakily get around the enemy defenses.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena are centered around stealth-based gameplay. However, I think the game in my sig (Deus Ex: Human Revolution for those with sigs off) will definitely set the bar for the modern era for rewarding a stealthy play-style.

I will try and list them from oldest to newest

Goldeneye 64

Perfect Dark 64 (IMO the best of the list probably, BUT it has some issues as its old)

Timesplitters series (2 is my favorite and I never played 1)

Perfect Dark Zero

Crysis (NEver played Warhead and 2)

Metal Gear Solid 4 (Yeah I know its not an FPS :P)

Goldeneye Wii

I really wish devs would still make FPS's with the Agent style gameplay that Goldeneye 64 and Perfect 64 had. Timesplitters is the closest thing I have seen.

No one Lives Forever 2, kinda old but you can play it either like a stealth game or like an ordinary shooter or a mix of both.

Far Cry 2. Everyone's #1 complaint about the game is the constant attacks from guard posts and patrols. I play the game stealthy and am able to sneak past them both almost every time. You can complete entire missions without being spotted if you plan out each move carefully.

The problem with Far Cry 2 and stealth is almost the same as in STALKER games. Every now and then you are being stealthy and all of a sudden the game glitches or something and everyone and their mom knows your position.

I thought the stealth in STALKER was fine. The problem with FC2 stealth is that the enemies were just annoying not deadly, there never seemed to be a good reason to try and avoid them, i just charged through and ignored them.

Honestly the stealth in vanilla STALKER was woeful, enemy detection was bizzare. Complete improved it, but LURK's stealth system was amazing - it properly factored in the use of light and shadows.

All Crysis games basically. Stealth works excellent for the most part, sometimes too well. You can go through most of the open-ended levels without being seen once. Far Cry 2 also has decent stealth, but as soon as you kill someone, the rest of the bunch will spot and chase you all too quickly. Still, if you remain at a good distance, it's well possible to kill off a nest of crooks without ever being spotted.

The stealth in Stalker I've found to be broken, especially in vanilla, since killing an enemy will automatically alert his companions. Arma 2 may have decent stealth, but I haven't tried it out too much.

Tactical games such as Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon are pretty much a given, but those games force stealth, which may not be what you are looking for. Still, if you can get a few friends to play Rainbow Six Gold (that's Raven Shield + Athena Sword expansion) with you in co-op terrorist hunt, you'll have some of the most enjoyable, rewarding stealth FPS experiences out there, even if the game is from 2005.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath also has very, very good stealth gameplay (and it's optional), but the PC port is still a bit problematic as it has missing textures and low framerates on some rigs. Still, I'd say it's worth a try at least.

Hope that helps.

Crysis seems to, or rather it punishes you for going in guns blazing. For a game that gives you so many abilities, I certainly feel pretty weak in straight up fights.

Far Cry 2 was pretty horrible in that regard. I Also hated the fact that enemies driving vehicles behind yours ALWAYS caught up to you, no matter how far away you were. It's like they had this ridiculous nitro boost and it was basically impossible to escape them without some sort of fire fight.

Yeah vanilla Stalker had some sort of little cheat detection for the enemy. You could hide in the shadows all you wanted, but they'd eventually creep right into your position. Even when you move and they don't hear you or see you, they change direction and approach your new position.

Yes, it's the first time I saw rubber band AI in an FPS game. I was quite baffled when I first saw that happening.

Though I must say that, despite all of the horrible design choices and questionable programming, Far Cry 2 was still quite an enjoyable shooter.

I didn't find it enjoyable at all. The fact that everyone was out to get you made it kind of stupid. Why would everyone in the whole game be out to kill you? What did you do that was so bad? It's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, everyone hates you, but they never explain why. And I loved their cop outs for missions. None of our guys know you're on this, so they'll be shooting at you too... FOR EVERY MISSION! It was just stupid.

Oh, I completely agree with you. Far Cry 2 had some horrible design choices and the excuses they came up with made it even more embarassing. However, the gunplay, variety in weaponry and beautiful setting do occasionally make me come back to wreck some havoc. It's a great game to just fool around in, but a bad one to actually play until the very end (which I did end up doing, by the way).

Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. It's not a stealth game exactly but you usually have to slowly observe your surroundings and plan out your attack.
