Hate to agree with this, since I love the game. But this drug user is correct, the shooting in Halflife 2 outside of the nagnum and gravity gun is wank.

Having said that the worst I've played (by a mile) is Jedi Outcast. The weapons have stray fire and the enemies constantly straff like bots, so, you move, trying to dodge them, while they straff constantly, while your gun can't hit shit, and when it does, the harder difficulty just tanks them up with more damage. If you want to hit them, you need to be still, and still = death

Rather than fun it becomes a wholly unpleasant experience, where you're getting by, by exploiting the AI rather than using any skill.

Best? Probably Fear. Although, while it's gun-play is bliss, the map variety and enemy variety is sorely lacking. Essentially, a bunch of square, largely grey rooms with generic military grunts. If it had Valve's level design or pacing, It could be a jewel without a blemish. Unfortantly, everything around the gun-play lets it down.

As far as a cohesive game goes, level design, weapon balance, enemy variety e.t.c... Quake imo.

I don't think I've actually ever come across a game where I go "the gunplay in this is shit". Not that I can think of right now anyhow.

Here's some of my favourites:

DOOM
DOOM 2
DOOM 3
DOOM 2016
RAGE
Quake
Quake 2
Quake 3: Arena
FEAR
STALKER
Crysis
Metroid Prime
Unreal Tournament '99
Unreal Tournament 3

I must say, id really knows how to make shooting guns fun.

I think most shooters do a reasonably good job in this area. I'm more interested in much-loved games that have notoriously bad gunplay. But I'll play along.

Best of the best

Winner: Serious Sam 3

Runner up: UT '99

Worst of the worst

Winner: Deus Ex (original)

Runner up: Half-Life 2

(Side note—I don't get the hate for Halo and Farcry 3 in this regard)

Gunplay is really important to me in shooters, a gun has to feel like a gun (or at least how i imagine a gun feels).

For me some of the best gunplay:

- Destiny

- Battlefield 4

- Wolfenstein The New Order

- Quantum of Solace (ps360)

- Killzone 2

And the worst:

- Call of duty

- Bioshock Infinite

- Halo

- MAG

- Haze

@mjorh: I just finished Wolfenstein TNO and TOB for the second time and it could very well be the blueprint for what good gunplay should be:

Weapons should be loud, hard to handle and dangerous.

When you fire a weapon you should see and feel the recoil, feel the power and see the effects of your shot.

Enemies should react accordingly and it shouldn't look like they are getting tickled, no, they are getting shot by some high caliber gun.

Killzone also did it perfectly in that regard.

Nice impact from shots
Nice impact from shots

Meanwhile when I shoot a gun in Call of Duty there is barely any recoil, and the sounds for guns in COD were off for the longes time too.

But advanced warfare at least had some better sounding guns :)

This should've been on my list too. Along with Killzone 3.

I think Killzone 2 was for me one of the first FPS I'd played where the hit animations on enemies were really impactful.

Battlefield nails the sounds of guns. But I did not enjoy the weapons themselves in Battlefield 4. Battlefield 1 already feels better :)

@mjorh: Good gunplay = FEAR and Killing Floor 2. When bullets hit your foes it's satisfying because of that punch, sound effects as well as the way enemies behave.

Saying worst gunplay on CoD because you don't know how to play or what?

CoD MW2 and BO3 got great gameplay mechanics - sure fast action paced with small maps isn't for everyone, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be num' 1 in no time.

I disagree about Halo too, Halo 1 had great multiplayer as well, there's a reason why people kept buying Xbox consoles, even if it's for single exclusive.

Rage is indeed top tier, but people should stop posting console shooters as best gunplay because its not possible. They all must design it so the inept controllers that consoles use can manage the shooting in game. It may seem to you as a console player that killzone or whatever has good shooting, but translated to M/KB it would be shit. You need mouse + keyboard to handle the recoil, aiming, reactions. You can only talk about best in class shooting with PC games.

I like that the OP mentioned the original Half Life because it is absolutely correct. Quite possibly the best feeling and sounding weapon in the entire genre at the time. You guys should replay Allied Assault to remember how awesome that game handles shooting. Since it was a PC purebreed game, every weapon feels vastly different, the recoil is outstanding and have big punch. Other than that, the usual suspects, Stalker, FEAR 1, Crysis.

Its pretty sad that the main components of a shooting game, the actual shooting, the enemies, the AI, the weapons are some of the least handled aspects of any shooter. You get something like FEAR 1 when the core elements that define the genre are taken care off, but almost nobody does it. Whats wrong with them?

Oh, you guys who posted Wolfenstein need to remove it quickly, its got nothing to do with best shooting. Its classic, nothing to write home about

@cassar31: Lol, pc elitist are so darn cute. You upset that console shooters can hold their own against their pc cousins?

Also not sure why so many are putting CoD into the worst section? Yeah the series as a whole sucks anymore, but something the series has always gotten right is the gunplay.

Best: FEAR

Worst: Deus Ex technically. But as far as pure shooters go, Half-Life 2.

Gunplay isn't just about the feedback on the weapons, but it also has to do with how satisfying and exciting the gunfights are in these games. With FEAR, each encounter is an immensely enjoyable one, whereas with HL2 it stays extremely dull from beginning to end. The Gravity Gun is the game's saving grace, but even then that only goes so far.

I'm a PC fan, but i'm not irrational. Gamepads simply cant allow for realisticaly good gunplay because the controller isnt suited for something like this. You mentioning COD is proof. You must think playing with a pad that cod is good. Has always gotten right, rofl. On PC, with M/KB, call of duty is like shooting nails through cardboards. The guns are fixed in your hands, no recoil, no feeling, like shooting blanks. Is ridiculously bad, played on M/KB. On consoles with pads it might very well feel decent.

C'mon, guys. We all know many of those games you listed really aren't as bad as you make them out to be. Sure, Halo has mediocre gunplay, same with Call of Duty, and a plethora of other games, but nothing compares to these. If you haven't played these, then you don't know what bad gunplay is.

You Are Empty.

Released in 2006. This one is easily worse than all of the popular ones listed.

Elite Forces: Navy Seal

Released in 2002.

However, this one easily takes the cake.

Extreme Paintbrawl

Released in 1998, just before Half Life 1 dropped.

In that regard, Battlefield 4 has some of the best firearms audio, really distinguishing between the calibers and weight of precision rifles, semi-autos, assault, and light machine guns. When engaged in a hectic firefight, the atmosphere of so many rifles discharging from all around, just immerses you in a real warzone, you can practically feel the hail of bullets permeating the air. Also solid variety in the recoil and handling between different weapon types and models.

While Halo might not have captured the "realism and authenticity", don't forget the sci-fi setting; not just in weapon design with advanced technology, but playing as a super soldier with augmentations (bio-engineering and cybernetics) that empowers a Spartan with superior weapon handling to buffer the recoil. I mean these are guys that can flip a 30 ton SUV with their bare hands. But again authenticity aside, I always found Halo provided very satisfying gunplay, that the weapon diversity of both Earth military and alien, gave the player plentiful variety in weapon balancing, and just overall solid interaction in enemy engagements.

Oh and have to throw this in, not so much as a gunplay mechanic, but with Gears of War it just had the most satisfying sniper headshots - being treated to exploding heads followed by the thick geyser of blood that had liquid weight to it (not merely a misty spray), like a burst watermelon... nothing more visceral and rewarding than that :)

In this regard, Quake succeeds in practically every category while in contrast Jedi Knight: Outcast falters.

Yeah, I was just thinking the weapons should feel good basically. They should have oomph, they should look good, be interesting, but mostly be fun and satisfying to shoot. And fit the game they're in, of course.

id is, in my opinion, king of FPS weapons.

Beats me. Most FPS games aren't trying to be realistic with gun play and ballistics. If that was the case, bad guys getting hit will simply keel over and drop. No dancing puppets or being tossed like a rag doll.

Also, the first time I fired a real AK-47, I was on target every time. Yet, try the same on say, STALKER: CoP, and I can barely hit a wall in front of me. Not a good start for a character who's supposed to be a veteran with weapons.

I have no problems with most shooters on the list. It's their loudness and deep bass I like. Most are okay. The wimpy ones are the HL games mostly.

The AKs that you start out with in Stalker are terribly corroded and are prone to jamming. You upgrade them and fix them up throughout the game so they fire more like a well-oiled, clean AK.

The difference when you are done with that is night and day.

Some of my favorites:

-Destiny

-STALKER

-Serious Sam series

-CS 1.6

Some that I don't care for:

-Bioshock series (almost ruins the entire experience for me)

-Far Cry 2

-Fallout 3/NV (VATS is fun but the standard gunplay is simply awful)

Edit: Damn, I forgot Wolfenstein: TNO as one my favorites. I also really like the peek mechanic.

I can understand jamming. It makes sense if the weapon is not maintained. I can also understand weak weapons in the beginning. What I don't understand (and do not put up with) is the inaccuracy of weapons in the beginning of the game when the character is supposed to be a hardened veteran and experienced with weapons.

I have more fun with Metro: Last Light where the character starts out with weak weapons, but no problem with aim.

That's what happens when you get a crappy AK with a possibly slightly bent barrel. Your bullets may not go directly straight. :P

This is not a legitimate criticism. Any "veteran" can't magically make a dilapidated gun fire straight unless you fix the thing.

There are so many intricacies, including barrels, sights that may be off center, and handles that may be askew.

i'd say KF2 is definitely the best, the way enemies react to bullets is on another level compared to anything else around.

FEAR deserves special mention for being the previous champion

for worst?

I think worst ever for me has been Fallout 3. The controls were just bleh. Enemies don't stand still and aiming just feels bad- too clunky to keep up with the enemies. Not to mention guns can be pretty inaccurate.

There are so many intricacies, including barrels, sights that may be off center, and handles that may be askew.

I can hit a tree repeatedly with the default assault rifle at the beginning. Yet, moments later, I fire on an eyeless wild boar-like monster standing still just 3-4 feet away (I'm up a rock). and....... nothing. That's crap.

That's guns and realism. No gun fires accurately 100% of the time with degradation taken into account. Besides, I feel you're wildly exaggerating this. It was probably moving, and you might have missed.

Those animals don't just sit still for you in that game.

It's not degradation. It's the game restricting me because the gun didn't have problems hitting trees and rocks.

There's no reason why I can get this grouping and yet, a critter standing still and much nearer (with broader silhouette) doesn't even get hit.

Despite lacking punch, for some reason I always found guns fun to use in Metro. May be because of sound, I don't know.

The original metro 2033 used to had bad gunplay. then after last light and redux version its vastly improved.

@AdobeArtist: If there is one thing I love it's the limitless potential for weapons in FPS.

Like the needle gun in Halo

The gravity gun in Half Life 2

Or that gun that shoots out black holes in Resistance 3

There is nothing more boring to me than having the same M4/AK47 over and over and over in each game. I love these crazy sci fi weapons. Halo has a good share of them :)

I like improvised weapons. That's why I've taken a renewed interest in Metro: Last Light. It almost has a steampunk feel to it.

Best gunplay for me are Killing Floor 2 and FEAR. And the shotguns specifically from the Doom series. Always thought those were fun to shoot. Counter Strike GO is also really good because there is a strategy to using the guns appropriately given the way each one works, and it's a fun skill to gain.

Worst gunplay... I remember Resistance on PS3 being incredibly shit-rific.

Some games I can't really classify as good or bad are games like Half Life 2, and Serious Sam. Half Life 2's guns do suck, but I play those games either using the crowbar or gravity gun, or by simply running over enemies in the buggy. Serious Sam there's no real weight to the guns, but that's the point. You just train 500 rounds of minigun on a group of enemies until they all melt.

But for how much I love FPS games, I sure seem to still be missing a few from my play list. I can't give a truly appropriate assessment of best and worst gunplay.

Yeah I really like Metro's firearms.

Especially the shotguns:

There is this one Shotgun that is made out of Bycicle parts lol

And then another fires shotgun shells at the rate of an MG (eats through your limited ammo though :P)
