@mjorh: I just finished Wolfenstein TNO and TOB for the second time and it could very well be the blueprint for what good gunplay should be:

Weapons should be loud, hard to handle and dangerous.

When you fire a weapon you should see and feel the recoil, feel the power and see the effects of your shot.

Enemies should react accordingly and it shouldn't look like they are getting tickled, no, they are getting shot by some high caliber gun.

Killzone also did it perfectly in that regard.

Nice impact from shots
Nice impact from shots

Meanwhile when I shoot a gun in Call of Duty there is barely any recoil, and the sounds for guns in COD were off for the longes time too.

But advanced warfare at least had some better sounding guns :)

i see, i've finished Wolfenstein TNO and man i enjoyed the hell outta that game and the stuff you said about gunplay do matter to me so i can pretty much sat i care about gunplay. The thing is, HL2 is one my fav games ever and now that i think of it, based on what you said, it's not big on gunplay department but i did enjoy it ...so i think it's not a deal-breaker for me yet i care about it.

How about gun variety? can we count that as good gunplay?

Haven't played KZ series but it looks so great, especially the impact.

@mjorh: Good gunplay = FEAR and Killing Floor 2. When bullets hit your foes it's satisfying because of that punch, sound effects as well as the way enemies behave.

I've played KF2 for like 20hours so far and i've had a great time with it, too many classes, so much variety, greatly balanced, i love it, my only complaint about it is that it has only 2 bosses, we're close to the release and they're gonna add another one, so basically 3 bosses ... which is not enough imo.

Hate to agree with this, since I love the game. But this drug user is correct, the shooting in Halflife 2 outside of the nagnum and gravity gun is wank.

Yup, same way I love the Metroid Prime games even though the shooting is less satisfying than Duck Hunt.

It is what it is, excellent gunplay isn't always paramount to an excellent game.

@uninspiredcup: i'm not sure how combat scenarios relate to gunplay, isn't that more of a "Encounter Design" issue?

MoH Warfighter had the most realistic sounding and feeling weapons. I've fired many and that game was great at recreating the experience.

Halo is on worst list? LOL How do you make this assessment with alien weapons that don't exist?

Agreed with Killing Floor. In fact the boss battles are the weakest part of the game for me.

But where Killing Floor really shines is when the game slows down and you see just how much detail is in the weapons, when they fire, it's incredible.

About Half Life 2... I've read countless times on these forums how HL2 has bad gun play. But I don't see it, the shotgun and magnum pack quite a punch. The SMG is weaker sure, but the combine assault rifle is really strong. Love that secondary fire that just obliterates enemies. Really, I enjoy the gunplay in Half Life 2. Wouldn't call it half bad. And the games I listed in my "worst" list have it way worse.

I played Half Life 2 a couple of times. And if it was a shooter where the shooting doesn't feel good... I would just quit I think and I never did. I also loved it when you'd take out combine and their death rattle would be this radio sound dying down. Loved that. So for me it's all there: guns sound good, guns have impact and feel strong, enemies show impact, ...

About variety... It's one of the most important aspects I feel. If your SMG in your game feels the same as firing a sniper rifle or a shotgun, something went seriously wrong. The whole game would feel off.

I also really appreciate original or fictional weapons: The katana in Shadow Warrior, Snarks in Half Life 1, Minigun, Cerebral Bore, Shark launcher, ...

Yeah that's how i feel about HL2

I'm on the fence about the whole "slow motion" thing in the combat, i used to hate it when i was in lower levels hence playing on lower difficulties, but now when i play on Hell on Earth difficulty, it does come in handy :D But yeah, details of weapons is astounding.

With "variety" i was more wondering about Borderlands 2 rather than how distinguished weapons are. i haven't played enough of BL2 but it has tons of different guns, gotta play it more to see where i land on how good its gunplay is.

Oh yeah, Killing Floor is a ton of fun on the higher difficulty modes ^^

I haven't played Borderlands 2 but I feel that 'randomized' guns like that lose a bit of the feel that a hand crafted weapon has. Though I will say that Borderlands looks to have a lot of crazy weapons so that looks cool :)

Borderlands 2 has tons of different guns, but they largely play out the same. They all kind of have a cheap feel to them. Not really a fan of the gunplay at all.

The shotguns are about the best type of weapon in the game, but even then, they become boring when you realize that all shotguns are largely the same.

I actually can't agree with any Star Wars FPS for the worst. I thought Dark Forces had it good for it's time and was done better by Outcast/Academy.

The worst though: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, 007: Nightfire (PC version), Metroid Prime (series)

In terms of overall feel, best would have to be FEAR. You just feel so powerful and the physics are incredibly reactive and bloody. As far as being a ludicrous power fantasy, Painkiller is the best. Everything about the game is metal as ****, down to the awesome weapons and the enemies you kill.

Worst would probably be the original Bioshock because if you weren't snapping tons of photos (really tedious) then weapons and powers by the end felt weak as hell.
