Including GeOW and ME makes this list insta fail

Which are both shooters. ME is pretty original cause its a grea RPG as well, but it's combat is very very shooter-y.

GeOW, I can't belive you are not listing that as a shooter. It's the most generic shooter crap of the decade.

uh, we were talking FPS first off. and I *believe* Gears is praised for the best cover system in a TPS to date, so it's obviously doing something less generic and better than the competition.

whether that means something or not, IDK.

and the fact that ME2 is on there....yeah...no.

Way too many generic and boring shooters that do nothing orginal. Shooters are the new JRPG.

goblaa
Good ones do exist, man, and they're not hard to find. Does every game have to do something original to even be good now? I can list plenty of games that are not original and yet managed to sell several copies and receive good scores (I know I know, sales dont matter) And ME and GEOW are TPS, we were talking about FPS, not shooters in general

Okay, I suppose I could see the rail shooters being labled under "FPS" (as well as the Metroid Primes), but Mad World? Seriously?

Switch a few words around, and you have the Wii players' response to the shovelware argument, hehe. :D

it's just shooters are too casual/pick up and play now so that's why they arent fun because they take no time to master.

So now to have fun you have to be pro at something or play it with skill? I can have casual fun with friends on Halo or I could be a stuck-up wannabe MLG pro and play strictly BRs on Guardian competetively.

We should be. Every single genre it seems is becoming more and more shooter oriented. Games where you shoot things in the modern day or the future are getting out of hand.

Let's ask the TC what he meant.

[QUOTE="savagetwinkie"] this, is entire fail, halo actually has alot of story, probably more so then uncharted, and fps's have nothing to do with how story based something is, theres alot of good fps's with good stories, halo for one. But i'm just getting sick of the same type of gameplay mechanics with so many shooters, recently there has a been a breath of fresh air with fighters, what we need now is more arcade racers, platformers, adventure, i've been playing tons of indie games lately and its probably because every other game coming out is in some way a shooter.HavocV3

first sentence will anger someone:)

but of all the shooters mentioned, Halo probably has the most story and TONS of lore. and most competitive when you take it online.

some shooter hybrids would be nice though FPS/RTS is sheer win, Renegade is the 'king' of that genre:)

To be honest, as far as the Halo series go its story is very by the books (decent, but nothing special to be perfectly honest ), however the terrible storytelling in the last two tarnishes its redeemable qualities (especially in the second after introducing the Arbiter, who was actually a compelling character).

It does do an ok job of carry the gameplay however.

It's a pity as indeed Halo's lore is very expansive and detailed.

Shooters in general struggle for diversity in narrative, the two most recent that come to mind, which are actually good is STALKER (despite having a poor text driven narrative, it's story does stand out), and Cryostasis... two games which incidentally move away from shooter conventions.

Bioshock's narrative is also fantastic, up until the last third of the game where it mercilessly hacks apart what made it so memorable until a particular turning point.

Its rare for a developer to really combine shooter and story well - or go beyond the style Valve pioneered in order to try and create a compelling singleplayer one.

I'd say they're the new platformers. Back in the 80's and up to the mid 90's platformers were king. Now it's FPS.

Agree, of all the shooters Halo has the MOST of story and the BIGGEST lore. Although I don't like it much I have to give it a credit in this regard. Although I cannot agree about competitive. It's just easy from get go and has auto aim, that's why it is so popular online.

I know I will get killed for saying this, but Imo FPS's are fastly becoming a "dime - a- dozen" genre. Whether its MW 2, MAG, BFBC 2, Halo series or whatever, the formula is always the same. I for one am looking to play more story based games like Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII to name a few. What are your thoughts on the state of FPS games?

NemeSyS-1
Well, after playing Crysis, I don't care anymore about FPS. That game is so good that all the other FPS seems bad compared to it.

I'd say they're the new platformers. Back in the 80's and up to the mid 90's platformers were king. Now it's FPS.

There was also a glut of fighting games (which I found boring) from the early to mid 90's. Oh well. It's not like there was a shortage of other genres. During the late 90's, there was a glut of flight sims on the pc. For a genre where each game can be played for years at a time, it was way too crowded. There always seemed to be a glut of one genre with each generation.

Right now, it's FPS games. Deal with it. There's plenty of games in other genres. Perhaps, the thread starter should list what kind of games he wants.

I like the genre, but I wouldn't mind having less saturation and a lower crap-to-quality ratio.jalexbrown
Me too. I want more games like Stalker and Bioshock, and less like MW2. I also wish the genre would stop focusing on mutiplayer too much.

I'm sorry as stale as FPS games are getting, did you honestly list those 3 as examples of something that is changing up the formula?

 I can understand Heavy Rain, but ME2, Uncharted 2, and FF 13 stick to proven formulas as much as any shooter. Crafted excepitonally well sure, but one can argue there are plenty of FPS games that stick out not for doing something new but being exceptionally well designed.

Also the genre has had it's formula changers in Crysis/Warhead, the Stalker series, Cryostasis, Left 4 Dead, Borderlands, Portal, Mirror's Edge

and some more story driven stuff like Bioshock, The Darkness, Half Life 2: Episode 2.

Also I don't see anyone complaining that Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII came out in the same time frame as MW2, MAG, and BFBC2Couth_
A WRPG, a shooter, and a JRPG. I don't see where's the similarity. :|

I love shooters, haven't got tired of them yet, probably never will. I actually think there are several good shooters this gen, and very few bad ones.

There are alot of FPS, but only a handful are worth a purchase. And the genre is evolving a bit... with games like Bioshock and Fallout.

Don't agree. Theres not too many FPS's. If anything theres just too many good ones. Why can't the other genre's keep up?Couth_
Because its an easy cheap thrills, instant gratitication genre that has got so stagnant the only way to improve on it seems to be flashier graphics and animation....
