Free-roaming games on multiple discs, haven't that already been done?

There are several threads on SW about disc space, or lack thereof. Lemmings claim that free-roaming games like GTA aren't possible to put on multiple discs, but haven't that already been done with Shenmue for the Dreamcast? And in FFVIII you could access all areas you've been to, or do I remeber incorrectly?

Repeating data on the same disk... That's not really a solution, that's what 80% of multiple disk games do, even Jrpgs.

It seemed to work for Shenmue, so why not?

tales of symphonia, meltal gear solid twin snakes was on two disks on the cube. a million rpgs were on more than one disk. alot of pc games were on multiple disks including games like diablo 2. multi disks always end up happening. and have happned this gen also with game slike blue dragon and whatever that other rpg coming out for the 360 is. eventually even blue ray will have to do multiple disks since they dont compress anything, i mean 10 gigs of audio on a six hour game. what happens when they make a 12 hour game? 20 gigs of audio? if they dont start compressing we will even see double disk blue rays.

is blue ray better? sure? do multi disk bug me? not really, dont it ever gen since games went to disk over cart.

The problem arises when you drive from city A to city B, change disks to enter city B, realize that you need something from city A so turn around immediately, change disks, go to city A for a minute, pick up what you need and then return to city B, change disks again, then get a message saying that something important is happening in city A, turn around again, change disks to enter city A.

Not sure how shenmue got around this, if you can only move slowly then this would be a lot easier as you only have need a small overlap in city A and city B on each disk to allow you to backtrack a significant amount of time. Its more difficult in games like GTA which can have extremely fast moving cars.

But this wasn't the case with Shenmue, once you changed the disc you never had to change back again.

Let me guess: Shenmue had a lot of cutscenes?

I'm wondering if you've seen any sailors.

I never played Shenmue so don't know how it worked, my guess is that it was mainly cut scenes and maybe audio that you had to change disks for, things that wouldn't be repeated if you return to the same area. This won't be the case with newer games, where the extra space will be required for high res textures. It won't completely ruin a game, but will be annoying.
