Xbox One X is getting FreeSync 2, Xbox One is getting FreeSync 1.

To get FreeSync to work on your Xbox and TV/monitor you will need:

  • The newly announced Xbox software update.
  • A FreeSync display.
  • More specifically, a FreeSync display which is compatible with FreeSync over the HDMI output
  • Sometime this week Xbox insiders in the alpha ring will be able to start using AMD FreeSync compatible displays for VRR output.

Source

Personally really happy at this. I hope Sony follows suite and it becomes a standard practice on consoles.

About damn time.

Now to wait for TV manufacturers to incorporate it into their sets, along with higher refresh rates. Hopefully the BFGDs Nvidia releases this year will spur adoption.

If any machine needs it, it's the Xbone; it has some horrible screen tearing issues.

I assume this kind of feature is mostly for monitors? Sounds like its happening around the same time as the 1440p support, which is also relating to PC monitors as far as I know.

The new HDMI format in TVs will support this feature, supposedly. One of the reasons I was saying that gamers should hold out on buying an expensive TV back in November. A lot of people wanted to tar and feather me for suggesting it lol Some people even thought it was some stealthy way for me to talk crap about Scorpio, somehow.

Newp! I saw what was gonna happen. For those of you who listened, you can thank me later, though.

This is going to be a great feature for consoles! Sony and Nintendo need to follow now. This should be a standard moving forward.

problem with freesync is alot of freesync monitors have a freesync range which starts over 40 or 45 fps...so it will do Nothing if your game runs at 30fps

The newest Samsung QLED’s have VRR.

I suspect some high end already released TV’s will receive a VRR firmware update, not many tho

Another great feature for XB1.

Wouldn't surprise me if Samsung TVs in the future will support FreeSync, since them and MS have some sort of partnership going on.

Good to see Freesync expanding, although I'm not sure how useful this is on consoles with all the post processing going on. Freesync usually doesn't kick in until about 48 fps anyway, and most Xbox games runs at 30 fps.

I wish Nvidia would release Freesync compatability. Nobody is going to buy their overpriced Gsync BS. Their laptops already use Freesync. Just release a patch for desktop GPUs.

good stuff. now we just need the tellies. hopefully sony follow suite (i think it has everything hardware wise though it may be limited to freesync 1 due to HDMI1.4. im not sure though). this should be a standard feature already on tellies and monitors.

Just hitting 48 fps won't make much of a difference either. The whole point of Freesync is to make fps drops less noticeable by covering up the screen tearing that occurs. It's meant for systems running 60 fps, for example, that occasionally drop into the 50s. If games drop below the 48 fps threshold at any point, it completely defeats the purpose of Freesync.

Freesync is an open source technology that doesn't cost anything to add. There should be no impact on price, unless the manufacturer chooses to gouge you (which is, sadly, pretty common in the console industry).

Almost every gaming monitor manufactured in the last two years comes woth Freesync at no extra cost.

on Xbox its mostly going to be used to give gamers the option of unlocking frame rates when games can reach over 30 FPS and under 60 FPS.

This is Freesync 2, and it’s for consoles. Whatever rules apply to Freesync on PC, don’t apply to Freesync 2 on consoles

Perhaps I should have been more descriptive in my other post.

Was referring to the BFGDs that will actually accept a 4k 120hz signal input, instead of being stuck at 60hz like current TVs.

getting rid of tearing isn't the only plus side from freesync/gsync, it's getting rid of vsync and the input lag and possible stutter that comes with it

We know Nvidia will price gouge their display, (which is sadly pretty common in the PC Gaming Industry) all while VRR/Freesync will come with every HDMI 2.1 TV

@Shewgenja: I remember reading about it, HDMI 2.1, but no way I was going to wait for that, it will be more widespread in 2019 I think, right now not many people have TVs that support it. It's the latest stuff and I knew the new HDMI format was around the corner, but you have to draw the line somewhere with these things, otherwise you'll never be satisfied...and if the TV you own cannot be updated via firmware that's fine, but for me I don't have any regrets getting my 4K TV and got a great deal on it.

Same, when the time comes I’ll just get a 75+ OLED with HDMI2.1 and relegate the 65” to the bedroom

This is great news and should be welcomed by everyone. Really hoping Sony patches the PS4 for FreeSync support as well.....but I'm expecting them not to. Seeing how the PS4 is barebones on the OS layer, their implementation would probably required developer code in for each game.

Wondering if the Xbox One S and X will support Low Frame Rate Compensation as well

Well now wait for the new standard,

then wait for the revision, because first edition has issue's.

Then wait for the next edition because a new standard comes forwards

etc etc

At some point you just have to bite and say fak it.

Yeah, I've seen it in COD WW2 (yes, I bough it). Screen tearing in the cutscenes which for some reason run at janky, no even steady 30fps. Don't remember if Infinite Warfare had that issue. Can you tell me the other games that suffer from screen tearing on the Xbone X. SotC has ST in the starting area at least in 60 FPS mode on mah PRO.

@Alucard_Prime: Thing is, it was never about getting a firmware update to this. Even the cord needs to be 2.1 compliant to support the 2.1 features so there is a certain degree of physical upgrade. Then again, I don't purchase TVs the same way a lot of people do. I'm not trying to replace a 500 dollar or 1100 dollar tv with another 500/1100 tv. I will splash 5 or 6 grand on one and make sure it is bomb af for a decade.

About in the same sitchy. The 65" 1080P LCD in my bedroom will likely lead to me getting even less sleep at night. lol

Battlefield 1 has a big problem with it. I remember experiencing it often(and its horrible framerate problems in general) when I was playing it at a bud's house. It's so hard to aim in that game since the FPS jumps all over the damn place. After enjoying 80+ FPS on PC with ultra settings, it's just not fun. Lol
