oh so you don't think it's perfect ..good the first step in improvement is acceptance...wait what?!!

"First of all, I don't think the current system we have with friend codes is perfect. However, if it's an online world where you can get access to anybody without any restrictions, I as a father do not feel like allowing my daughter be engaged in that kind of world. So for Nintendo, especially in terms of the people who have never experienced online video games before, we think that it's still very important to create a world where we can assure that there will be no harassment for these online beginners, and we really want to assure the security and safety for them to do that. So we will be studying this on an ongoing basis in order to improve Nintendo's own circumstances where people can freely and safely enjoy the communications through the net."

What a good way to put a positive spin on a terrible system. I mean the fact this could have been achieved in a billion different and more intuative ways is irrelevant...apparently.

As an adult gamer I agree with Nintendo that children need safeguards. And if you disagree, well that raises some eyebrows.

Pedo's don't play games... and if they do, they'l probably play **** trash like Gears of War or Halo on Xbox Live with mic device for cumminication.

Friend Codes assures you your savety and fanboys bash and hate on the online service? Thank god, thanks to Nintendo my kids can savely play their games on my system.

Not that there could have been safety catches built into a better system or anything.

What a terrible system.

friend codes are basically phone numbers. it's not like its unintuitive. it's just a minor annoyance really.

The problem with friend codes is not the fact that it's a number. The problem is that these numbers must be exchanged between all parties for every single game. It's completely unintuitive if you have a large set list of friends to play all your online games with.

The fact of the matter is that Friend codes are still a waste of time for gamers and non gamers alike...i dont want to copy down sombodys stupid 14 (?) digit friend code just to play with them online..when on XBL and PSN i can just grab there gamertag..hell even Steam has the same functionality..WII online is no where near as good as it could be..even if there are Mic spamming 4 year olds on XBL, XBL still has a much better community and online play than WII online will ever have with this system..

your post just reeks of fanboy saying that Trash like Gears of war and halo with mic communication...lol at least they get mics unlike WII network..not only that but anybody should be smart enough to avoid pedo's if there not then they should just quit online gaming forever..

I apreciate Iwata's concern over the pedo's but MANY Wii gamers are not children. Do you think a person like me who is 24 years old is gonna be abused by any pedo? If anything were to happen was me abusing the pedo!

Anyway all i have to say is that the Parental Control options are there for a REASON Iwata! They are there so that when a parent is afraid of letting his kids talk to strangers he can turn off any feature that will allow that.

By doing this, the older gamers can enjoy the features that younger people cant because their partents wont allow them to! Its that simple!

Where OH where has the Parental Controls have been used so far!? *sigh*

I've heard reports and it seems others have as well. don't jump to conclusions.

I've heard of a few rare instances, but it's definitely not a big problem.

Still, even avoiding that problem is easy enough without resorting to friend codes. Just replace the friend codes with a username that isn't displayed when you play games. You could even mandate that you can't have a player handle that's the same as your username, if you care that much. And there's no reason not to have a friends list carry over between games.

The Friend Code system is far more complex than it needs to be to accomplish its goals.

Just like E3 being a casual only event, this is another great convenient excuse from Nintendo.

The worst part about friend codes is that there are different ones for every game.

Seriously, was this necessary?

That's a lame excuse. XBL has parental control, that way you dont need a 16 digit code and your kid is still safe from predators....

I havent seen you around system wars b4 today but I think you have to be the biggest nintendo fanboy i have ever seen

but the IDs on psn and xbl are compleatly safe, if your worried about your kids make it so they cant talk online, make it so they cant have any personal settings like a bio, name, location, or motto. yes you can talk but with a push of a button you can mute everyone, if someone is bothering you through messages mute and block communications. The age restriction of the 360 is 18 so at that age you know i dont think youll be bothered very much.

i almost forgot if gears and halo are **** would you care to give me some of your great multi player games you play?

The fact that they are numbers isn't really a problem to me. in fact i like that since i can have any name i want. also ppl that know many name won't know many account just like that. my only complaint is that they are tied to the game rather than the console. I agree with you there. I still don't see then as unintuitive. just annoying.

so basically you have a display name and an account name. it's really not that different than the friend code system cept the account name is a number. ppl still see you by the display name an only ever need to know the account once. like i said. the only issue i have with FC is that they are not unified.

First of all you don't have any kids. Any person who's old enough to be a father to multiple children doesn't resort to this childish fanboy nonsense. Second of all, I suggest you learn more about the parental control in XBL. Any responsible parent can safely assure their kids wont get exposed to pedo's if they want to. See MS can give you both things...

Meh... I'm used to friend codes...

I mean I hear that Mario Kart Wii makes it easier to give out to friends on your Wii list, but who knows..

if they make iving it out to people you know already ...easy, than I wouldn't care if I'm 201583282992 or 82950285225.

Once you throw the numbers in, it's a done deal. Unless you erase them from your list, you don't have to worry about putting in the numbers again.

It's an annoyance yes, but if they can give us one unified number or some way of making it where everytime you have a game, the game connects to WiiConnect24, sees your friend has an FC and saved data on his system, than I feel it should send a friend request or just add them to your system or let you add them without a hassle.
