GTA V
What a f*cking masterpiece. Closing in on 100 million copies sold and still retails for $60 nearly 5 years later.
Ocarina of Time is always the one that tops these lists followed by FFVII. Gamefaqs best game of all time polls have always been between these two. I wouldn't consider either of them the best game in their own series let alone the best game of all time.
Personally my pick is World of Warcraft. The sheer amount of time I spent in that game (thousands of hours) and as an experience it can't ever be replicated. It's something you had to be there at the right time to experience.
There's only one right answer:
Ocarina of Time
No other game has topped as many GOAT lists.
To elaborate...
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
It is an objective fact that Ocarina of Time is the game most often said to be the best of all time.
Ocarina of Time is always going to be near the top of the list because no other game is going to have an opportunity to be the first game to really get adventure gameplay in a 3D world right. There have been plenty of games that have improved upon its formula, but it was the first. I could see the first amazing VR game overtaking it, though.
Ocarina of Time is my perception although I hear many saying its overrated and that Majora's Mask is better
Personaly, I havent played either of them, so I cant comment
Apparently OOT... personally doesn't come up in my gang, but this thread suggests that's what's on most gamers' minds.
My friends would probably pitch Starcraft, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate 2, or something along those lines (and I'd be more inclined to agree - although I'm not sure what my favorite game would be and wouldn't commit to just one)

Watch it being the first Zelda in VR too!

because sell is not equal to quality. it sell because its establish brand name and is still 60 bucks because they know people will buy it including non gamers.

OOT is like the Citizen Kane of video games, in the sense of how it keeps topping GOAT lists for decades. It's not that they've never been bettered, but because they were the greatest works of their medium in their time, they were revolutionary and influential in shaping future generations, and aged very well after decades.
Citizen Kane kept topping the Sight & Sound polls (the most prestigious GOAT movie lists) for a half-century, until a few years ago when it was finally dethroned by Vertigo and Tokyo Story. There may come a time when OOT eventually gets dethroned. But that time is not now.

There are a ton of established brands in gaming. No other game has ever sniffed these kinds of sales at $60. Also what the hell is a non gamer? If you play games you're a gamer by default. Why would someone own a PlayStation or Xbox if they aren't a gamer? Lol.

lot of non gamers own PS4 and xbox. they barely even play games at all but only most popular one like madden, FIFA, COD, GTA. they are casual gamers. non gamers donot play games but know all these franchise and sometimes play them too.
these people even exist on PC too. lot of my uni friends think steam is just a software to download dota 2. some only play dota and pubg.
establish brands sell and GTA is biggest brand. no matter how bad game turn out. if game is named GTA it will sell.
remove GTA name and it wont sell much. i guarentee.
imo GTA is most overrated franchise of all time. i played every single game and end up quitting game in half. its just another boring open world. same like ubiosft made their games criticize.

Sports games. Movie games. Maybe CoD depending on how serious they play it.

My cousin who is not into gaming is getting xbox one just for Fifa to play in boredom.
My oh my how I loved that game on 3DO. Good stuff. :D
Can't for the life of me understand why EA hasn't made a sequel to that 3DO version.

I wouldn't call fifa gamers casual gamers, this might have been like that in the past but fifa today has so much depth that it has nothing to do with casual anymore, sure it can still cater the casuals like it did in the past, but fifa has become a science.
pretty much every stat you see here mattters, then you have workrates, size, chemistry styles. Not to mention the type of formation and a bunch of ai tactics.
I can't see how you think gta is the most overrated franchise, gta 3 was a landmark because of it's open world city, vice city for the music, gta san andreas was a masterpiece and so was gta IV.
Gta V may be a bit of more of the same, it did bring the franchise into this gen. But frankly gta IV could have already done that as well. But you have gta fans just like you have any other fans of a franchise so if it keeps on selling they will keep on making it.
But calling it overrated is just an insult to history, some of the gta games were one of the best games ever made, it has just become normal now.
I can understand your opinion though, if you're younger than me (and that's highly likely), you problaby didn't play these games when they released and so it's much harder to tell what impact they had on gaming.
For me Everquest 1 (everything pre Luclin) is the best game ever made and Final Fantasy VII is close second.
That's not what the thread is asking.
It might not have been what you wanted to hear, but thats what im replying with. In my circle of gaming friends (my perspective in relation to this answer), EQ1 is considered the best game ever made, and I agree. Most of the people I game with today are people I played EQ1 with from 99 onward.
@commander:
GTA is absolutely overrated. When it comes to the actual gameplay mechanics, the GTA games have always been either shallow, flawed, or sub-par. Whether it's the player controls, camera, NPC AI, car handling, melee combat, or shooting mechanics, GTA is sub-par in all of these areas.
The only GTA game that deserves a free pass for its flaws is GTA3. While it has aged horribly, and was a deeply flawed game even for its time, it was a revolutionary game. But that's not true for later GTA games, which keep recycling the same old formula the same way Ubisoft does, yet Ubisoft gets flack whereas Rockstar gets a free pass.
Road Rash 3DO

If you think about it, Road Rash 3DO was a very fun but shallow game, which is fine with me. Gamers nowadays would probably expect more.

Well, I would agree when you're talking about gta V single player campaign, but if you haven't played gta san andreas, then the flying is an addition. Gta online is completely new mode as well.
But for me both were never that interesting, I already played multiplayer mods on the pc with gta san andreas which were much better imo (cops and robbers).
So in that sense gta V may a bit overrated but saying all other gta's besides 3 are overrated feels like an insult to gaming history. San andreas was no short of a masterpiece, the rpg mechanics, flying, outdoors were all spectacularly done. Gta IV was less spectacular but still very good because it brought gta franchise in the x360 gen, which was a major leap in terms of graphics and physics.
You could criticize gta 2 and vice city, but they still had their perks, gta 2 was already much better in graphics, and new types of missions. Vice city was just a nice setting with miami and eighties music. The difficulty was a bit of challenge as well.
But vice city and gta 2 were just sequels. Comparing this with ubisoft seems a bit like jumping to conclusions. Gta has been always the leading name when it comes to this type of games. After liberty city stories, you could say gta V was one to many, but liberty city stories where cheap games, and gta V did bring gta online.
Ubisoft was just chasing cryteks quality with far cry, and assassins creed origins is the 9th assassins creed, None of these games really stood out actually, certainly not like gta san andreas or gta IV.
What was a masterpiece were the prequels to assassins creed, the prince of persia series, especially warrior within, but that is quite some time ago.
@commander:
I'd agree that San Andreas was a masterpiece. But the problem is that its sequels, GTA IV & V, were downgrades. While San Andreas also had plenty of flaws, it was ambitious and tried to evolve the GTA formula, before GTA IV & V scaled it back and became more shallow.
The golden age of GTA was from GTA3 to San Andreas. Those games were not overrated for their time. But GTA IV & V are absolutely overrated.
The only GTA games that are relevant to gaming history are the first GTA (for starting the series), GTA3 (for being revolutionary), and San Andreas (the pinnacle of the series). Nothing else in the GTA series is relevant to gaming history.

Yeah I kinda forgot gta IV got a 10 across the board, and that is defenitely overrated if you see what a game san andreas was. The increased graphics and physics were not worth a 10, especially not when they took the flying, the outdoors and the rpg mechanics out of it.
I guess they saved that for gta V, but if I'm not mistaken, those rpg mechanics are not that fleshed out as in san andreas.
I still kinda liked gta IV though, which can not be said of most ubisoft games.
