Interesting, but for the most part, they're actually very similar consoles with only a few minor differences.

I can somewhat agree but if you look at Sony's lack of software at launch and Microsoft's lack of hardware at launch, it really shows how much they pay attention to each other and us gamers in general. Their both slowly becoming more alike, which will make for a more interesting battle next gen.

Then why would we need two competing consoles? Lol it would be the same console with a different logo.

Only this gen.

I still don't understand why Sony went with beefy hardware this gen though. Like, did they look at the success of the Xbox last gen and say "we need that"? :?

I'm just hoping the motion controls kick off, and both can offer two unique experiences.

Well, i'm not sure how i feel about motion controls. Even after owning a Wii, most of the time i still prefer a controller and sitting down, not having to move, but just think about what it is im doing. Its more about the mind with a controller where as with motion controls i feel like its a test of your coordination.

I disagree. Xbox Live is a great service, and its obvious Sony would copy features/play catch up with it. Hardware wise Sony has superior Hardware, MIcrosoft isn't playing catchup or anything, just trying to fix it/improve it/add more value.

With Windows Media Center, Windows Media Player 11+, and USB Flash Drives, it is very easy to view movies, pics, and music on you Xbox. With a CD or USB, it is possible to transfer them to the HDD. The ZUNE Marketplace also has a selection of music and videos to watch/listen too.

Just my thoughts though. I do think Sony has done a great job with the hardware, and with PSN so far. Microsoft has come a long way since the start of the generation also (Kinect, NXE, Design, etc.), and if they can put more resources into first party I think they will have a great Next Gen.

Edit: I also feel like Sony didn't live to their promise with the PS3. Cows may disagree but performence wise the 360 and PS3 are very close. Uncharted 2 looks a better, but doesn't blow away 360 games running on a multi-platform engine (Gears and Mass Effect 2 IMO).

That would create more lulz in SW, since they still fight over features and all.

Come on! put fanboyism aside and put logic up front. Remember when the Xbox launched without HDMI and noticed how useful it was when Sony launched? Remember how they though 20GB was enough? Remember how they didn't think Wifi should be integrated? Dude, there both playing catch up.

PS is not Xbox. They looked at the success of the PS2 last gen, and were the only company that could launch a $600 and push Blu-Ray. It would have been even more successful however the Wii is more popular, and 360 came out a year early. Considering that, I say they did well.

I'm not trying to be a fanboy, just stating my opinion :?. HDMI should have been included, and WIFI too (every console besides the 360 had it, including the Wii).

The 20 GB wasn't enough because of how Xbox Live turned out. Full Game Installations were added, XBLA Games became A LOT bigger (from 50 MB --> 1 GB!).

The main thing Sony and MS are trying to do right now is play catchup with Nintendo and Motion Controls.

Neither console had amazing launch line ups. In fact, I don't think any console ever has. It just takes time to get the libraries going.

I certainly think all systems have strong points and weak points. Being a fanboy about a particular system is simply immature.

It gave it a strong push for a decisive victory, but really there's no reason to say that it couldn't have just been more hard fought instead.

Dreamcast launched with an AAAAE :P That just proves how launch line up isn't all that important in the end. The PS2 launch was horrible too.

Dreamcast did.

I stand corrected. I can't say I know anything about the dreamcast. I'm pretty sure that someone in my barracks had one when they came out, but I never saw any games on it, or even the controller in his room.

well yeah, it was stated before

Microsoft is primarily a Software company so Software, O.Ss and Networks services is in their D.N.A.

Sony- specialise in TVs, Stereos, Music, movies, and hardware.

But both lack flair

Sony excels in hardware. They are a company with a history in making great hardware Walkman, Bravia TVs, etc) Micrsoft excels in software. They are a company with a history in making great software (Windows 95, Windows 7, Office 2007, etc) Thats just the way it is. This explains why MS is better when it comes to software support (easier to make games for 360) and online gameplay. Sony on the other hand is better at hardware (look how reliable PS3 hardware is compared to 36). Hopefully they both learn from eachothers strengths and weaknesses :)

This is actually true. Microsoft seems to be leading on the software side of things, as is evidenced by their GUI and online service (Xbox LIVE), whereas Sony definitely leads when it comes to the hardware (such as in built Wi fi, number of USB ports, hard drive, USB memory functionality etc)

Of course...they are playing up to their strengths -Microsoft is a software based company -Sony is a hardware based company (for the most part) It stands to reason that Sony would have better, more reliable hardware and that Microsoft would have better software applications

I'd say games count as software, and Sony is sometimes regarded as being ahead of Microsoft due to the number of first-party studios it has. I'd say Sony is more often trying to catch up with Microsoft in terms of community-based features, than software, but even then they still have Playstation Home :P

I have both PS3 and 360 and in my opinion my PS3 wins hands down. But it didn't until I got my HDTV. On standard def TV's i'd say the 360 wins and I know its stupid to say something like this cos its nearly the same just better resolution. But when I got my HDTV and an HDMI cable, the PS3 really unleashed. Its not just a console for me now its my whole entertainment centre with the best blu ray player on the market and for some reason PS3 games look a lot better in HD than 360 games. U2 looked unbelievable so the I thought Alan Wake would too but it didn't leap off the screen like I was expecting.
