Seems like valve is pissed and jealous...maybe instead of releasing a game then riding its wave for 10 years they should actually do something at valves studios.
I mean its obvious gabe does't do much he gets fatter and fatter every time I see him and now has the time to grow a beard that is inferior to my own.

Well I love steam and everything but we all know what "Valve time" is and that is based on something 90% done usually. So a cnosole that they haven't even done or have no experience doing......Maybe in the year 2090.

There is nothing superior about your beard brah. That fire red beard that probably has crumbs from your girl scout cookies all entrenched in it. Plus, not to front, dat dere avatar is lols.

Only bad thing about it is...not all games are on Steam. They'd have to allow Origin in some way, as well as games that don't use either.

>Gabe makes nuanced comment about how consoles are going to have to adapt to a more open and iterative marketplace.
>TC adds "Gabe Newell bashes consoles" to the topic name.

This is why we can't have nice things. :P

He's completely correct in his last comments about consoles being so closed off. Everyone is trying to be like apple and itunes; they want all of your content to come from them and be tied to their platform. Microsoft selling movies and music on the xbox is a fantasy. Nobody is going to download an album off of Zune on the xbox live marketplace and then have that tied to their xbox forever when they can just buy something off iTunes or buy the CD and use it on all of their devices. Consoles need to be gateways to content, not providers of content.

Nobody is trying to be like Apple and itunes. Console have been closed systems since like forever. As for your Zune comment, 10$ a month and I can download every song I want from it. I especially love the PC software.

I don't like the idea, simply because I'm almost certain they'd start abandoning PC if it threatened the success of their Steambox, and Valve is one of my main reasons I PC game.

I mean, MS used to be the face of PC gaming before Xbox came along, and now its all about the Xbox.

Partner up with Sega, I've already said it.

Though I prefer Valve to stay a software company, hardware could saturate the market and be a money pit for them.

Only problem I see with this is that Valve tends to take forever to release their games, and no one is going to buy a console that has no exclusives, sorry Lems (I kid I kid) but it is true (not the Lem part, just the exclusive part).

I wonder why they are doing this, I do know they have been pissed off at how MS has been treating them lately. I would gladly welcome a new console on the market, more console means more competition which means more quality for everyone!

And Valve wouldn't screw over their customers or fans like some of the other guys, and they would have a great online console service that is FREE! If it had great exclusives I would buy one.

Sega's RingEdge arcade gaming platform is already MS Wintel based box...

Valve could follow Amazon(and other eBooks shops)in bundling thier services with x86 PC OEM hardware e.g. my Acer Iconia W500 tablet comes with 3rd party online shops.

PS: There are rumours that Windows 8 ARM based machines are "wall garden" type devices. Mac OSX 10.8 "white lion" will introduce it's own "wall garden".

Though I love Valve, their customer support and chew wieners.

If they can improve that then I'd say they're ready for a console of their own!

Well I never had any problems where I had to contact customer support. But in general I just find they teach their customers and fans better. You sign up for Steam for FREE and they give you Half Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead for FREE, AND they give you 70% discount! All for just making an account.

They don't charge people to play online, they let fanbases do what they want with games by offering dedicated servers and mods! Newell may act like a sea saw with his opinions sometimes, but they don't try to nickel and dime their customers or rip them off like MS does.

Portal 2 proves Source is still great. TF2 proves Source is great. You can't call Valve "lazy" because they haven't released Half-Life 3 yet, but have introduced two new wildly successful IPs this gen alone.

either way, it wont happen anytime soon thanks to Microsoft

Team Fortress has been around forever, it's not a new IP. I do agree Portal is great, but it's technically a spin off from the HL universe. The fans want Episode 3, and valve is keeping them waiting. All I hear is "blah blah blah"

I'd be the equivalent of an Apple fanboy if Valve made a console. Camp outside the store to get it, make unboxing video, buy every iteration with minor improvements.

Yeah, but I don't know very many that play it anymore. To be fair, I haven't been on the PC version much. I completed it, got bored with it shortly after. 1st and 2nd one.

Well I would say steam is the heart of PC gaming. If they incorporated a solely DD system for PC gamers. They could call it the STEAM MACHINE

Not the heart. Some people like to buy the physical copy, or they buy it somewhere else (Origin, Amazon).

But they don't have next-gen visuals, physics and AI.

I think Valve wants the hardware standards to increase before they make Half-Life 3.

Very unlikely and i doubt it would be made by Valve, most likely they'd partner with someone like Samsung. They have absolutely no experience with physical products (they always partner with a distributor for their boxed copies).

They aren't really comparable though.waltefmoney
You're right waltefmoney, unlike Microsoft I think Valve would get it right the first time and may even profit without overpriced addons and extra fees. I hope to be a game developer one day but the games I want to make are in genres that aren't that popular on the PC (like beat'em ups). I don't want to deal with Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft. From my viewpoint as a gamer and as a possible future developer I would glee if Valve announces a console platform with these features; allow companies to host games on their own networks if they want instead of having to use Steam or any other, less expensive and restricting licensing fees or even none at all, allow the use for keyboard and mouse for FPS games and allow third parties to design and sell their own controllers for the platform, ability to create and share mods, the ability to replace and use HDs you want, the ability to customize or mod the console's OS, etc. I don't even like Valve's games (Half-Life is one of the most overrated series ever IMO) but they are my favorite company because of their practices. Please make this happen Valve!

When I read the article, this kept popping into my head:

Just without the 360 logo...

In all honesty, If Valve was to enter the market, I'm worried about whether or not they'd pull steam from PC. It's pretty much the heart and soul of modern PC gaming. Without it, PC gaming would revert back to the 90's. This is just all in my head, and I know you hermits will have reasons to try to prove me wrong, but the only gaming I do on PC is through Steam and Minecraft. That's it.

That's it.

I'm a lot like you. Steam and Minecraft are my platforms (not that either of those is a platform). These days I guess I game less on "PC" and more on "Steam" - and as you say Steam is largely the heart and soul of PC gaming so if they needed to turn to hardware to stay competitive it'd mean Seam was in decline (I would imagine due to popular competition, not from internal collapse).
