Game of the Decade: Zelda Breath of the Wild vs Witcher 3

@Juub1990: demon's souls is definitely clunky. VERY clunky. With poor hitboxes and abysmal framerate to boot. I started replaying it recently and it's bad. Reminded me why I put it down halfway through the first time

Frame rate is a different beast. PS3 being a weak piece of crap is to blame for that, not the game itself. And yeah, some hurtboxes are kinda odd but TW3 is even worse in that regard so...

It's a lot worse. Not "comparably" worse. But if you haven't played DkS or DkS III you can't really judge.

@Juub1990: ok. Fair enough. I promise I'm not trolling - I found Demon's Souls combat woefully overhyped, and I find the "badness" of TW3 combat woefully overhyped. It's my honest opinion. If you gift me DkS I promise I'll give it a go, but I can't see myself spending money on it after the slog through mindless pattern-based enemies that is Demon's Souls

Weird. I see tons of people saying Zelda and it gets tons of praise online but in finding it rather.....ok.

Playing through it on PC and its cool and i really like that you constantly get cool loot.

Maybe because ive never played the other Zelda games that i have nothing to compare it to but tons of the game is just.....nothing. In Witcher 3, there was alwas something cool to find or quests you stumbled upon.

Exploring in BotW is really pointless.

The quests are cute and some characters are funny but I dont find it to be better than W3 at all.

Well BotW is more fun to play, for me at least. So I'll vote for that with the caveat that we're talking about the 60 fps version ;)

The Witcher has a waaaaay more interesting setting, better characters. Pretty much everything about the Witcher is better than BotW except for the part where you have fun playing it.

I don't think either of these should be GOTD . There are plenty of games that had a much more profound impact on my gaming life than these two games.

Between the two, it's Zelda. The gameplay is there, and with TW3, it's janky as shit. That being said, the world of TW3 and the story were very solid.

Not to mention BOTW is winning that poll by a wide margin, beating TW3 by well over 3,000 votes.

Yes, played all of them except Demons' Souls. I played DS1 first, then Bloodborne, then DS3, then DS2.

Well, that is insane. DkS3 is just an inferior DkS1 (pve wise) and an inferior DkS2 (pvp wise). But to each their own i guess.

Witcher 3 is a good successor to Skyrim, but I don't think its in the same league as BotW.

That is amazingly debatable. Shockingly, amazingly debatable.

DS3 has better pacing, better level design, better art design, better bosses, and better music than any of the other entrees. But so does Bloodborne. What puts DS3 higher than BB in my opinion is diversity and pacing. But BB is still really, really good. In fact ALL of these games are amazing.

DS2 PVP I'll give you that one (except the invasion while hollow thing, screw that). DS3 had the least cohesive atmosphere... in fact, it had barely any atmosphere at all. That's my biggest mark against it. And I liked the Metroid-esque world design of DS1. DS3 was the most linear of the Souls games but than isn't necessarily a bad thing. Again the pacing was sublime.

Favoritism: Demons Souls>Dark Souls>Bloodborne>Dark Souls 3>fun games>Sekiro>Dark Souls 2

On paper: Dark Souls 3>Bloodborne>Dark Souls>Demon's Souls>Dark Souls 2>Sekiro

PVP in these games is whatever to me, I would much rather play a fighting game.

I've played through both thoroughly... The Witcher doesn't even belong in the conversation in a comparison to botw.

... Not even close.

First of all, this is all about PVE ... i couldn't care any less for PVP in Souls games, if i want a true PvP game i play DBZ Fighterz, KoF or SFV.

Now with that out of the way, i find the world in DS1 overrated, yes, i said it ... overrated.

Don't get me wrong, DS1 is one of the most influential games of this century and i had tons of fun with it, but every time i started a new game (either + or new character), my level of excitment always went downhill fast after O&S ... and is no coincidence, the later part of the game is ... kind of ... bad, well maybe not bad but subpar and mediocre and ironically, this also makes you realice how in the first place the interconnected world is not that good to began with because you start to see the barriers they constantly put in this word making it far more linear than you originally thought.

Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne were much more clever getting rid of this gimmicky and not forcing it into every level, that's why i think the level design in DS3 and Bloodborne is much better than DS1 improving the replay value and lasting appeal.

Now, Bloodborne, i adore that game ... is pretty much what i always wanted in a game being a huge horror fan, in fact i think Bloodborne is one of the greatest horror games ever, that game scared me so much more than for example Outlast 2. Not to mention the lore, the music, the enemy design (Ludwig is probably the most disgusting and ugly boss i ever faced ... in a good way of course), everything is top notch.

And with that being said ... i still take DS3 over BB, crazy i know.

Dark Souls 3 while being inferior in atmosphere, it has much more variety in terms of combat, weapons and builds ... that alone was enough reason for me to jump at the game several times after i finished it always trying something new ...

As for the lore, i love how in Bloodborne they created this whole story very "Lovecraftian", they nailed it ... but Dark Souls 3 is the culmination of everything we have seen and it all feels very special, not to mention the final boss of the entire franchise, Gael is probably my favorite this gen.

I also think it has better boss fights, specially the DLC ... so yeah, for me Dark Souls 3 was better than Bloodborne.

BOTW was designed for a console with what? 0.4tflop? Don't expect the world to be packed. Not to mention that when this game came out, Nintendo were open world virgins.

I own both games and I wouldn't even give either of them game of the year let alone decade.

zelda breath of the wild, the main game in witcher 3 was a chore.

Dark Souls 1 let you fight like, 12-16 different bosses from the instant you stepped out of the asylum. Sure, you had objectives that needed to be completed in a certain order, but you had a massive number of different paths you could take to get to those various objectives. If you wanted to, you could go directly from the asylum to Sif in the forest, kill him, get the covenant of the abyss, drain New Londo, and kill the 4 Kings at the very beginning.

The game becomes linear once you are at Anor Londo, but it's by no means some half baked gimmick. It's legitimately something a more experience player can take advantage of on replays, and it's translated into so many fun speed running routes for that game.

witcher has to be the most overrated game this gen. that and uncharted 4. enjoyed botw more because its in handheld.

@jg4xchamp: yes, it is. That's why no other game had this map design. The rest of the games went for the central hub area.

And just because I think it was a gimmick doesn't mean is not well implemented, I mean it works and it feels great to go to the catacombs to try to reach the blacksmith that early on the game ... But then it just stops and you need to do everything else in order.

I don't view games in such a manner. If I enjoy a game, that is it. I don't directly compare the games I enjoy with other games I enjoy because they generally offer significantly different experiences. If this was more categorical, I would be able to identify at least couple but not just one. I find these types of threads particularly basic.

What? Just because something wasn't used later doesn't change the fact it was well implemented or didn't have a significant impact on how the game played. The rest of the games if anything absolutely lost something for this type of design, not the least of which is just speeding up the pace by letting me level up at bon fires.

On top of all the replayability options it provides, it allows for multiple areas of the game to be vertically stacked on top of each other with interesting short cuts to different places. In the other games those short cuts are relegated to one specific area, obviously still ace, but it's the difference between why the first game is a straight up metroidvania, and the sequels are more straight forward.

Barely any order to any of it, up until Anar Londo, your routes on how you ring the two bells n get your other items is completely different. Were I arguing the term gimmick it be one thing, but I said it isn't half baked, which it measurably isn't.

And they had one attempt to get that right, and never built on it. Lets be real that shit got dropped more for reasons like people going into the graveyard at the start of the game and not going to the undead burg.

Zelda: BOTW is the third best game of the decade after The Last of Us and MGS5, so I'll vote for that.

Witcher 3 gets 7th place behind RDR2, GOW and GTAV. Or maybe 8th if Skyrim gets 7th.

@jg4xchamp: Well, i'm glad they got rid of it ... i still have the feeling Blightown was such a mess because they had to connect it with something else ... hence the terrible elevator section and why they didn't make the poison dudes respawn after the first time you killed them.
