I used to rely on reviews back then when deciding what games to buy, but now reviews is not helping anymore there are alot of games below 7 in score that I enjoyed more than the 9 and above.

When gaming is this expensive, a review is pretty important. I generally still buy what I really want, but if I'm up in the air, a solid review from a respectable source or group of sources might help me decide if a game is worth buying.

It made a big impact back then with my decisions on buying games but now with the internet alot of opinions get mix in so now I only rely on previews and some comment from people who played the game.

Yeah, well, that's just your opinion man.

But really, yeah, it's all opinionated and depends on the person, I only get 6.0-10s though, I never trust below 6 again from what I played.

Reviews are a good indicator to me before dropping $60 on a game. They're usually about right (especially an average of many). What people fail to understand is that A, AA games can still be great games.

Ignore the scores, read the actual reviews. And read different reviews.

Most people can't get past the ratings, quite sad really.

Francis Bacon wrote that there are four reasons for ignorance:

1. weak and incapable authority misleads people (in gaming industry, it's the critics, who are too coward to stand up to the powerful gaming industry)

2. habits (in gaming industry, it's what's most advertised and hyped)

3. the lack of general knowledge (in gaming industry, the audience has hardly any knowledge of the other arts)

4. false wisdom, i.e. people hide their ignorance by pretending to be knowledgeable

They help in the sense it gives you some basic info ala tec issues, length and description of the gameplay. After that its all pretty much if the reviewer enjoyed the game and basicly their opinion. WHich is the parts I tend not to listen to as much since everyone doesint have hte same opinion.

Use reviews as a guide. There are some games that I enjoyed a lot despite them being rated low and there are also games that are rated high that I don't like. Use reviews to give you a brief idea about how the game is so that you know you're not wasting your time on a crap game.

The only thing I've gotten from current reviewers is that it is painfully easy to get a respectable score. The 7s of the industry are pretty much an average experience, the big name franchises get some free passes, and all in all it's really hard to take videogame critics seriously. Although I admit to enjoying gamespot's writing, but I wish they had more of a critical side to them. Though I assume they are somewhat restricted because gamers wouldn't be able to handle the sudden drop in review scores, and genuine criticism.

Edge is an exception. Yet at the same time, they're one of the most hated because of this, despite being one of the very few publications that do a decent job critiquing a game. I find that game reviews do help. The reviews. Not the ratings.

Yeah as outlines for what the game is about, what it does well, and blah blah reviews get the job done.

I tend to read a copuple user user reviews from both ends of the scale when I want to have a proper impression with a game. That seems to work out well.

Ive been gaming longer than most reviewers. I know what I will like and what I wont. I judge for myself. Do yourself a favore....NEVER listen to OR care what others say about a game you think you will be interested in. Try it yourself.

The content in the review is usually more useful than the score now. I've played a lot of 8.0 games that I enjoyed a lot more than 9.0 games.

I find reviews from major sites are not reliable, as there's too much chance for sketchiness. It seems often that the reviewers don't even play the games and rate it based off their own bias or hype for the title, rather than on its own merits.

I have to disagree with this. Most of the time, its better to do the research yourself, read the reviews, watch videos, get thoroughly informed before making a purchasing decision. If you try it and hate it before you did research, who's gonna put it back on the shelf besides Gamestop (unless you rented it of course). then you just wasted $30-$70.

If i'm undecided on a game I will go to metacrtic and read several reviews, both good and bad, to determine why its as good or as bad as people say. I have bought several games in the past that were rated very poorly but I enjoyed like Blood Wake on the Xbox.

they need to raise bar once a while...it's common sense...otherwise gaming studio can just keep recycling products...but i am suprised that they give PS3's Black Ops 9...

Black Ops on PS3 is so bad, poor framerate, low resolution and bad connection comparing to previous COD games...THey shouldnt give PS3 version same score as 360 and PC.

I agree with him, he isn't saying research is pointless or anything he's saying you shouldn't purely listen to reviewers.

I think you have to take game reviews with a grain of salt. What if an FPS is reviewed by a reviewer who doesn't usually play FPSs? Then there might be some bias.

Also, I've wondered before if maybe game developers/publishers pay reviewers, magazines, and sites some money under the table to give good reviews to their games and bad reviews to their competitors' games.

if your looking for good single player games/entertainment value but its not going to be a multiplayer game you play with friends than you should study reviews. however if your buying a black ops, halo, gears, killzone and have buddies your going to play with than reviews should not sway whether or not you want to buy it.

I don't see why Black Ops should get a 9 period. On the CoD forums, the same complaints are made in every versions forum, I think you are mistaken that any version is "good" or worth a 9.

In terms of helping me buy games I would put them in the following order

Trying the game (maybe at a friends house or even renting it)>Demos>Personal Research>Friends Opinion>Reviews>Scores

Some of my favorite games have gotten 6s and 7s, while one of my least favorite games of all time got a 9.5. Scores don't really help me at all, they are merely there to track the reviewers overall opinion of the game. While a review itself is just a guide on whether or not you should buy a game, buying a game JUST because of a review score is not very wise.
