Ok, I'm the TC, some responses

I do have broadband, its not the fastest, its only 2MB, but that doesn't matter anyway, go do some downloading, and see what actual transfer rates you get ;) There is quite a bit more involved in download speeds than your home connection guys..... Seriously....you remind me of the guys online that blame lag on "a guy with a cheap assconnection". N00bs. According to your theories, with my 2mb connection, I should of been able to download the 700mb mag update/patch in just under 6 minutes. It actually took over an hour.

I will concede the point about "hours". It was misleading. I should have worded it as"over an hour". To the person that posted saying Iclaimed "7 hours"....I didn't. It does say "can take"- as in not every update takes this long. However, my main point is the difference between XBL updates and PSN updates.

My gripe is this - as I said, I don't get much time to game, its why i've always been a console gamer. Pick up and play has always been console gamings main benefit for me . But now I have a PS3, I stick my new game in (uncharted/Mag/etc) and i'm confronted with an update. Even the smaller updates seem to take a good 20 minutes, buy the time its downloaded, then done its install etc.

It just seems a complete joke when compared to the xbox. Xbox patch their games too, but they take seconds.

As for running them in the background, so far I've not had one thats let me do that? Although with uncharted 2, I got annoyed, it was getting late, needed to go to bed, so hit cancel, and it let me play the game anyway. Which is strange, as the warning that came up when I first went to play the game basically said I "needed" to do the update.

So yeah, PSN updates are a bit of a joke, and I wonder what PSN is doing soo differently.

I'm fairly sure its got NOTHING to do with connection speed to servers. The XBL updates download way too fast, they are obviously tiny. So it seems to me, xbox games are somehow more efficient to patch.

Why is it, the xbox game updates take seconds, where as PS3 updates can take hours!?

I get limited time to game so I find this pretty annoying.

Socom had about 600mb of updates

MAG had 700mb updates

I stuck uncharted 2 in the other day to find 7 updates were neeeded. The first one was 140mb, so I turned it off again.

For me, this totally goes against the benefits of console gaming.

angryfodder
Socom was huge but mag was only 350 for me. your uncharted situation is common. If you don't play the game for a while you'll miss out on the updates. Besides, the uncharted 2 updates are that big because they're giving you extra content not just fixing code for free. I don't know why socom or mag were that big though, could have been the same thing.

I had a 30 MB until a few weeks ago and now have 15. 2 MB is actually slow these days. Especially if you're downloading files over 500 MB. The reason why Xbox live takes seconds is because the patches you are downloading are small. Pick a multiplatform game and run updates. You'll see that the difference is minimal.

I have a quick and easy solution. I just download the update data to my computer, then load it to a flash drive and voila! Pop in the thing to my PS3 and it takes no more than a second to read the thing and installs very quickly. As for game updates, if you keep up consistently some aren't so bad, but I do know that the PS3's DLs could be faster, or rather I wish the were...

[QUOTE="locopatho"][QUOTE="razgriz_101"]

the last CoD4 patch on my PS3 only took around 2min max installing an dl/ing.The only patching that ever annoyed me was the LBP ones as i stupidly deleted them to make way for borderlands then it had 10 patches to DL only took around an hour. When it did that i just went away and watched the telly. But some patches were pretty heavy.

And to tc 700mb is a pretty big patch i highly doubt you could download that in under a min unless you had an optimal connection and setup straight to the servers :S.

-Snooze-

Dunno now, maybe it's his net as well, tho I think he has the same speed as me... According to him most updates for PS3 take 10 to 15 mins, he literally wouldn't believe I was getting updates in 10 - 30 seconds!

Id say my average update time on the PS3 was about 5-10 minutes. Compared to my 5-10 seconds on my Xbox.

Since I only used my PS3 for exclusives it's hard for me to compare them directly, however when i did lend a copy of Oblivion from a friend, it took about 20 minutes to download like 4 updates. The Xbox would have done that in 30 seconds.

there are no patches for oblivion on PS3.So super debunk there its never been patched in the whole 2 years i have owned it.

The updates take long because of the way the PS3 handles patches. It is an issue Sony needs to fix, but there's no need to exaggerate. They don't take hours to complete. At the very least, they should allow background downloading and installing of patches like Steam.

Slashkice

It took me over 4 hours to get the Motor Storm patch... So I can believe it.

I've heard this mentioned before.

How does it work? Can you do it for all game updates? For example, could I download my uncharted 2 updates on my PC here now? (work PC)

If yes, that might make it less of a PITA. If I get a new game, I can just download the updates whilst i'm at workand load then onto a flash drive.

Any info would be great, cheers.

Unfortunately you cant do that for game updates as far as firmware updates you can do it for those and for people who dont game that often it is a big deal cause depending on the game the size of updates can get crazy and for some games they have multiple updates which makes no sense to me what so ever and they still have to install after downloading them.

The way I understand how it works is that MS only allows a certain size for it's updates, something like 5mb (don't quote me, not sure). This ensures the update will be DL'd fast simply because it's small. With PSN updates it is handled differently. I have the downloaded version of Socom, which is like 600mb or something like that, everytime there is an update for that it needs to DL 600mb. Basically any DL'd game needs to be completely re-downloaded in the update. For full retail games I believe there is a set limit for the updates, with MW2 it seemed to be something like 15mb, so everytime there is an update it redownloads the 15mb. I guess if you don't play for a while you need to download multiple updates instead of just the newest version.

It's basically because of 2 things. 1) The servers that houses the downloads has a terrible broadband provider and the servers aren't configured to handle the number of gamers who access them at the same time. 2) Sony has it sent up like the PC. So you download the patch/update and then run the install to load the patch/update. So this takes twice as long. With the 360 Microsoft's downloader will automatically install while it's downloading as well. I hate PS3's updates and game patches. I also hate the madatory installs of 3-4GB. It sucks.

I just don't update anything on my PS3 anymore. I updated once since the slims came out (so i'm a few versions behind). GOW3 asked me to update, i politely declined. :)

Well updates take a couple of minutes for me. I think that becuz you dont use you PS3 very often the patches and updates stack up and when you finally put the game in, your hit with huge long updates.

Actually you can only do this to system updates unfortunately. As for game updates, no dice, at least none I own can. :(

its not the time it takes to download the updates for me. its just really f'n annoying when the download freezes. like, it'll start dloading then just stop but timer keeps going up and up and then a few mins later i get an error and gotta start it over. i usually stop it myself when it does that then start it over..and sometimes it takes me like 10-15 times to actually get it to download all the way. now, it doesnt happen all the time, and its not the ps3...its just the internet where i live...its on the slow side thats for sure.

Sony seems to be running the PS3 like a PC, which yes, makes it feel like just that, a PC and detracts for the ease of use of a console.
