I think it's a cross-up between Metal Gear Solid 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4. One and three I think did well on the story without making it unnecessarily complicated by the end. Two and four on the other hand go over the freaking top. On one hand, it's pretty cool that I can go back to these games and play them again and actually be surprised by what happens in them despite playing them before, but on the other hand it's sort of boring listening to dialogue for 30 minutes before and after boss fights.

What do you guys think?

I do too :) But sometimes I feel like it detracts from the story! Deus Ex had a great story and dodged lengthy dialogue sections.

MGS series has a very convoluted story. It is also a terrible story. Sure, it's told well, but honestly, it gets WAY too much praise.

I wouldn't say it's terrible, it's just that....wow, they seriously need to hire editors for their cutscenes.

It would have to me the MGS series for me, it's not just convoluted, but just poor as well, the only reason it even gets praise is because of the cheesy 'epicness' it instills into the lifeless minds of some of the more..hardcore fans. Though the soundtrack was superb.

That's not very fair. It brings up great points about politics, control, etc. What about the Metal Gear set up to filter the internet, controlling all information so that dissent is impossible and America can be slowly turned into a police state? That's some pretty heavy **** right there!

That sounds unoriginal. But when I speak of my comment, i'm referring to MGS2/4. MGS1/3 were great games, especially 3 which really fleshed out the history/past of the series in a less convoluted manner.

The story wasn't bad because of the unogriginal plot, it was bad because it needed editing, and more development, like *spoilers*.... Building up to what's her face's cancer. Big Boss's return There are more i'm just too tired to think them up What i mean is that they have to build up to it, not just drop it in on a whim.

Jack the Ripper was Raiden's nick name when he was a child soldier in the Liberian Civil War. And Solidus being the president and orchestrating the Shadow Moses Incident with Ocelot was a great twist, IMO. Hardly B-Movie status.

Metal gear series for sure. FFVII is another example, if you take the entire compilation as a whole. Xenogears and Xenosaga is another example. Chrono Cross as well. Final Fantasy Tactics toa degree, but the translation to the game was poor. A story gets convoluted when a director does not know how to handle the depth he has.

Xenogears/Xenosaga handled their depth perfectly well. Better than FFT. But you're right in that at times FFVII could be muddled.

Chrono Cross had depth?

No, Xenogears/saga were pretty pretentious. There was little to no subtley with the "message" they were trying to convey. But once you made peace with the pretense, empathy with the characters and the epic journey stole the show.

But yes, it was heavy handed with their overarching themes.

I'm gonna put up my flameshield and say Xenogears. I always felt the story made itself complicated, purely so it could be complicated. And in doing so, just made itself convoluted and not very entertaining. I should probably hide now I guess.

He has a point. It isn't bad but Kojima and Murata do need to work with editors. There is nothing wrong with that what so ever.

MGS is better because they gave us an encyclopedia to explain the story.
