Ehh in a sense they work hard in what they do but to say they're like other physical athletes? That's really dumb. Would LOL hard if they made it to the Olympics tho.

As a sport maybe but as athletes? No, but then again this is coming from the same government that thinks pizza can be classed as a vegetable because of the tomato sauce.

its obviously not an athletic sport. BUT it is tough and no one can argue that. These are professionals at the games, I know it'd be hard for me to play against a l.o.l. pro team.

The reason they're classified isn't because they're "athletes" but because it is easier to get a VISA for foreign players if they are classified as athletes.

Well in Korea, STarcraft is considered a National Sport.  A contract is important so that the team sponsoring you doesnt go back on agreement as far finances, practice sessions, housing (yes starcraft players are given a place to live, i am not kidding), work time, royalties, publicity, winning cuts, etc.  Leagues are self explanatory - Starcraft has been doing global competition (ie usa vs korea), it helps for organizing brackets.

For all the same reasons teams put athletes like LeBron James under contract, professional gaming teams do it to their talent. It makes a ton of sense.

99% of you are missing the reason they won this classification.

ome League of Legends players are now considered professional athletes by the United States government, which allows international players easier access to visas to compete on American soil. According to a tweet from League of Legends Championship Series commentator Leigh Deman Smith, the US government now considers professional players on the same level as NBA, NFL, and NHL competitors. This is especially important news for Canadian players, who are included in the North American segment of the LCS. With the changes, it will be much easier for them to come to the States for the weekly tournaments.

Just because you don't like the idea of eSports, doesn't mean that this isn't a great win for them and will help grow the scene even more. It's fun, give it a shot. Drop your prejudice for a moment and revel in games being more accepted outside of nerd circles.

It's to help them get visas to enter the United States easier, not to be considered athletes in the way you think. The topic is extremely misleading and nobody is bothering to actually understand the issue. Typical SW.

The reason for that decision was to make international travel and play much easier for people. It's not about being seen on the "same level" as athletes. I don't see what's funny about it.

Many of the players who come to compete in the US tournaments like MLG are from Asia or Europe. Getting a work visa or travel visa takes a long time, unless you're an athlete. Athletes get a special process that allows them to compete over the length of their contract, so Riot and Activision have worked to help get this classification to allow those competitors to more easily attend tournaments. It has nothing to do with being athletic, just more about letting people compete.

Competitive tournaments are cool and all that, but I can't sit well with the participants being referred to as athletes. Coin a new word or something.
