A wonderful glimpse of the much awaited digital-only future of gaming.

  1. Silent Hill Downpour and Silent Hill HD Collection delisted from PSN and XBL.
  2. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure HD delisted from XBL
  3. Aliens VS Predators and Aliens Colonial Marines delisted from STEAM
  4. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World delisted from XBL and PSN
  5. Marvel VS Capcom Origins delistes from XBL and PSN
  6. Uno and Uno Rush delisted from XBL and PSN
  7. After Burner Climax delisted from XBL and PSN in NA
  8. GB Tetris to be removed from eshop

Also, some games you could no longer buy from some/all digital stores if the industry was digital only:

  • Prey on Steam
  • Phantasy Star Portable 2
  • Deadpool
  • Blur
  • MAFIA
  • The Saboteur
  • 007 games
  • Too Human
  • Wolfenstein 2009 on Steam
  • GTA 1 and 2
  • Dirt 2
  • Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast on Steam
  • Viva Piñata PC
  • Manhunt 2 on Steam
  • Simpsons Arcade Game
  • X-Men Legends PSP
  • NFS Underground 2
  • NFS Most Wanted original
  • Fable 3 PC
  • LoTR Battle for Middle Earth 1 and 2
  • Act of War on Steam
  • Onimusha 3: Demon Siege on Steam
  • etc...

License expires = game goes kaput.

Considering that it doesn't take much for licenses to expire (companies going under, timed licenses, cut costs, etc...) expect to become more aware of this as gaming gallops towards that digital exclusive, possibly streamed sunset.

tl,dr: Digital only gaming is absolute shite.

What is this, an excuse? An observation hidden under heavy sarcasm?

I dont blame "digital gaming" for being susceptible to licensing issues. I do however blame corporations that want nothing but to make this the norm, thus robbing people of choice.

For many they are worth purchasing and playing.

When digital stores are the only way to play certain games then yeah, it is to blame. With physical media, even if the publisher decided to take it off from store shelves, you could always find it on ebay or somethin... I fear for this so called "future" of DD apologists

@Vatusus:

Let me word it better: Yeah it's the fault of Digital gaming that devs and publishers are too lazy to come up with their own IP so they have to pay a temporary license for their game, giving it an unescessary expiration date

Edit: TC, last time I checked GTA 1 and GTA 2 can be downloaded for free on PC directly from Rockstar :) and they are part of the Rockstar Collection pack on Steam

Yeah I like DD and all but this is just insane. More and more games keep disappearing on us.

I understand licensing but what's up with games like act of war, gears of war or Fable 3 ? :/

"Steam sales lower the value of IP" - EA

Ok, so what about timed licenses that make your games flat out disappear EA ? What about that ? What about games like NFS U2 or Most Wanted ?

Publishers have legit reasons to drop licenses; like maybe not enough people are still buying to justify the costs of renewing it or someone else bought the license and has different plans for it. Maybe the company went under and the license was never picked up again.

All valid reasons that have very little effect on those that can still hunt down a sealed copy of that game or a cheap used one, because those don't vanish into thin air when deals go down and consoles don't discriminate against discs, yet.

@Thunderdrone: I don't know how it goes for digital games on consoles, but on PC people can still get deadpool and many of these discontinued game (piracy of course), it's not really different from used games since devs aren't making money off that game anymore

At the same time you just admitted Digital gaming isn't to blame for what happens with license titles, I mean I get it you and others don't like Digital Distribution, but to use this as a point against it? didn't really make sense to me as the licensing is an issue of devs/publishers

They don't disappear. If you own these games from these services - you can still redownload them. You simply can't purchase them anymore. Which basically makes this entire thread and all of its participants incessant babies. Who cares if you can't buy these games anymore from DD?

he did. its pretty interesting to think about tbh.

is piracy of a game, potentially a lost sale? well i'm not convinced it would be because they weren't willing to part with any money.

is the sale of a used game, potentially a lost sale of a new copy of that game? well maybe it is and maybe it isn't, but one thing's for sure - they were willing to spend some money. but devil's advocate, what did the gamer who sold the game do with that money they earned? well hopefully they bought a new game!

is this discussion at all interesting to you?

Cows? I think you mean lems (always online Xbone) and herms (these already sold their soul to Steam). Now go get your medication because you're already mixing up realities.

Good thing I got some of those before they were delisted, they should still honor re-downloads for those that already purchased them, mainly just Scott Pilgrim and After Burner Climax apply to me, and even if I couldn't re-acquire them I'm not at much of a loss there. Though, it is a troubling idea.

Well I kinda do want to buy Act of War nowadays since Eugene announced that they are making a spiritual sequel of it not too long ago.

everyone should fear a digital only future. DD only means that the publisher will have more control over the game than yourself that paid for it to own it. And that is without mentioning the hacking of accounts, the DDOS's attacks to servers and the fact that after those games are removed if your HDD fails you lose all your games forever without any way to get them back but by piracy.

I remember hearing something about marvel vs capcom where you couldn't redownload characters or something that you had bought after the licenses on the marvel stuff expired.

lol

-Used game stores make most of their money from used games. Which lets them expand, thus increasing the number of retail video game stores across the globe. Stores that will also sell new games, as you might know.

-Many people find the low prices of the used game market attractive enough to consider buying consoles, thus giving the industry money and increasing the userbase as well as the chances of future full retail purchases by these buyers.

-Many people sell games to buy new ones, thus giving publishers money to fund developers and adding long-term variety to the retail marketplace. Variety that is imperative in breeding "backlog gamers". The type that really keeps the cash flowing.

yeah but it's still...urgh.. it's still giving Konami money for releasing such a borked version of both games. They had a terrible run with HD collection re-releases. Is the post-patch anything comparable to what Hexadrive had to do with the PS3 of Zone of the Enders 2 in that respective HD collection? Yet another mess from Konami.

No, Hexadrive did a better job. Still, all the major audio/video issues were addressed or improved and Silent Hill HD now runs on a playable framerate.

Don't get me wrong. Its pathetic that it ended up like this. But it looks, sounds and runs okay now. On PS3 that is, they completely fucked 360 users by not even patching that release so beware of that version.

Regarding giving Konami money... I don't think it matters. They are slowly getting out of the video game business regardless. They seem to be more interested in Health and Fitness centers now lol

hmm, well out of defiance I was about to say I'd probably settle on buying it used as a last middle finger to the company but the de-listing almost forces me to unless I go PC lol. At least the PS3 version got the love though as it was probably the only console it sold well on anyway, if at all.

That's true and yet sad lol. Hoping Silent Hill stays afloat long enough for at least 2 games this gen and some how Kojima convinces some devs to make my Zone of The Enders 3 :(

you're correct there, but that was made by Bluepoint studios IIRC? They have an extremely decent reputation among the port houses. I think most of the things they've done have been stellar.

I'll say this, Silent Hill has never been in a better position to explode into "stardom" as it is right now, considering who is behind it. With KojiPro sailing the ship it successfully bypasses all of the shitty business and marketing practices (or lack of) that Konami pulled off so far while sending the Silent Hill brand to die.

It already gathered enough buzz with P.T., Del Toro and Reedus to eclipse the marketing efforts of all SH games since SH3, combined.

WTF does that matter to the consumer who wants a game and can't get it because the license expired?

"Oooh, the devs and publishers are too lazy to come up with their own IP". Maybe so, maybe not, but how is that even relevant? Step out of this stupid system wars shit for a minute and realize that people want what they want when they want it. People don't care if the devs and pubs are stupid or lazy or whatever, the issue is that people want a game and don't have any way to buy it.

Not having a way to buy it is different from not being able to download it. You can still download these games that are no longer sold on the market that is the miracle of the digital future.

What, are you talking about piracy? Shit, while we're at it, let's just download everything without buying it. Right?

If that's you want to do, sure. People act like a game disappearing from a digital store is the be all end all argument that digitally downloadable games are the worse thing that could happen for gaming when in reality digital storage has allowed for a wider range of preservation than before. Just because a game disappears from a digital store doesn't mean you cannot play it although you may have to take to more fringe methods to do so. It's funny you're so opposed to the idea when all everyone does is bitch about publishers and developers and the direction of the industry in this thread.

EDIT: Digital distribution on top of preserving games throughout the years has also allowed for a wider range of games to be published through self-publishing.

You want me to how many retail-only games we can't get because they are out of print?

I for myself have been trying to find a copy of Fire Emblem Path of Radiance that isn't over 100 dollars from some shady eBay seller for almost 7 years now. Thank God I bought Radiant Dawn when it was 20 bucks cuz that's also over 100 dollars nowadays.

I don't oppose the concept of digital-only; it certainly is much more convenient for something to be put up again after being taken down, compared to retail games which basically has zero chance of being reprinted once it's forgotten by the masses. Games being taken down due to the license expiring, you have to blame the publishing companies for those, not the concept itself.

Only thing you lose is the physical copy, and while I still like to collect physical copies, I won't be killing myself if it goes digital-only.

Hello abandonware.

If a copyright holder doesn't feel the need to provide a legal means of acquiring their software and taking my money, then why should I bend over and pay some third party for a used copy that may not even work?

Well, if there is no price tag on those games anymore, then it's free, right ?

For PC it makes no difference unless some person buys games and does not activate them. You cannot resell PC games. So your option is to pirate the games.

On console though I can see the issue, if it was retail you could just buy it second hand somewhere.

The difference is that a physical copy can be sold and resold for as many times as people are willing to buy and sell it. Digital only will most likely be tied to a service and regardless of the fact that its owner might not want it anymore, its stuck there and can't be passed on to people who do.

So, physical copies stay in circulation, digital numbers dwindle down as people tie them to services. And again, I'm not blaming the concept, but screw those who push to have it be the only choice.

Also, my local game store was selling copies of Radiant Dawn for 19,99€ NEW not too long ago... I probably should've bought them lol
