I find The Order 1886 overrated graphically for its bland and static environments as well as dark aesthetic and intensive blur, really not pleasing to the eye.

Also, Crysis 2 which looks worse than Crysis 1 despite the latter being open world and DriveClub for its inconsistencies.

The Order is fantastic. I have not seen a better looking game than it at all on any platform.

DriveClub is very overrated though. Not that good looking of a game outside of cherry picked GIFs and JPGs.

MGS V. So much MGS V.

how people praise this game's visuals is beyond me. and i'm not normally one to nitpick a game's graphics.

This. So much this.

It's like they took the same brown or grey texture and plastered it on everything.

That game set the bar for all other games. It took years for other games to catch up. Crysis still looks good to this day without mods, and it is 8 years old!

I would say that The Blur:1886 would have to win the most overrated graphics award.

Driveclub is the first game that popped in my mind, because people talk about it a lot due to its graphics, but when I finally saw the game in real life, I felt the graphics were only a little better than Forza's, not a huge difference that some of the gifs posted here gave the impression. Maybe my expectations were too high, I don't know.

As much as I like DriveClub's weather effects, I'd have to pick that, at least for this gen. Everything besides the weather doesn't come very close to what I've seen other people post.

LA Noire's facial animtions. It didn't do a whole lot to enhance the experience, it didn't make questioning and interrogation any more intuitive (whatever I couldn't 100% I just replayed case). And it made a game that should have fit on one disc fit on multiple. It was also responsible for much of the delay.

Can a game be graphically overrated? If it looks good then it looks good. What makes a game overrated graphically?

Forza. I think that, graphically, it looks like asshole soup. It only looks marginally better than GT6 (premium cars, of course).

People were hyping out how visually appealing Halo 2 was and it's really an ugly game even back then.

Anything that over uses motion blur and depth of field. They are horrible masking, smoke and mirror techniques mastered towards the end of gen 7. On top of the that the last thing a game needs is to decide on where and what you can focus.

The Order springs to mind as one of the worst culprits, targets aren't even in focus when you aim at them with iron sights. Although that 'game' also uses silly amounts of fog to help obscure everything that's not in the central 30% of the already massively reduce screen area, which makes it even worse.

I agree with the order, for as much praise it got (and as much people talk about sub 1080p being too blurry) that game was blurry as hell, anything not right in front of you was completely blurred out

Yep. On max settings it's doing more than the 7th gen could handle but it doesn't matter when the details are so rough. It's also very unoptimized.

Every Naughty Dog game since Uncharted 1. They looked pretty outdated (not bad looking just outdated) even during the time of release, yet some fanboys still act as if those were technical marvels or something.

Then there was MGS4 with plastic like character models and blurry as hell textures, yet during its honeymoon period it was called a "revolutionary game" only possible due to teh powah of cell and blue ray. TBH, at times (not all the time) the game looked ugly, even back in 2008 as well.

The Order: 1886 had a good hype until that 5 hour leak video and everything went downhill. Granted, it's a tech demo late game that just shows you what the PS4 is capable of.

Driveclub. I turned it on expecting to be wowed, and turned it off unimpressed. It just doesn't look as good as people hype it to look. Actually, it is very unimpressive unless in the replay mode.

At the time the UC games were head and shoulders above gears when it came to tech.

I'll get stabbed for saying this, but Grand Theft Auto V. Sure, the environment is beautiful, but the characters, not so much. The characters look really stiff and rough to me. But then again, a ton of games have that issue.

On the other hand, the most graphically underrated game out there is Infamous: Second Son. I personally didn't hear a lot of praise for it.

Metal Gear Solid 4. I think I bought into the System Wars hype when that came out.

Driveclub is another. It's visually inconsistent. It can have some beautiful vistas and amazing detailed cars all accented by some great lighting, and then there will be a picture of a horribly jagged fence with some 2D foliage behind it on top of grass with textures that rival Minecraft. Yuck.

I also wasn't really wowed with Witcher 2's graphics on the PC. Maybe that's because I played it late. The game has amazing atmosphere and some beautiful environments but it too falls for some serious visual inconsistencies. Everything felt a bit grainy, especially with the very weird shadows they use.

The Order is the one I thought of first. I'd also go with every shooter that thought mixes of grey and brown with the bloom ramped up to 100 was a good idea.

I'm going to get hate for this - Almost every PS4 "heavy hitter" exclusive ever. They get hyped so much, I see them, and it looks like somebody smeared Vaseline all over the screen with Micheal Bay driving the post processing effects. The Order was artsy, but otherwise visually mediocre. On the PC side, Metro: LL in many scenes, IMO texture's looked really poor sometimes, even with tessellation on max and running in 4k native. I don't think it holds a candle to C3. MGSV looks extremely bland as far as the environment is concerned, but I haven't played it so I could be missing some things. Haven't played any Xbox One "uber graphics" games.

Far Cry 4, now while I love the gameplay, and the game engine's capabilities, I feel when one makes a game of this size as far as environments go they need to learn to add variety to the terrain, foliage, other geographical characteristics more, as each corner of the map felt the same as everywhere else for the most part. At best the only thing that varied much throughout the map was the animals you could hunt but that was kind of it. Not to complain, it's a nitpick, but one I wish they'd remain conscious of when doing games like this.

That's a poor criteria by any standards. Bayonetta is not a better looking game than The Order. While I agree that 60 FPS always produces a better picture in motion and gameplay benefits from it, it doesn't produce a strictly better looking game.

And yeah, the black bars suck. No way around that, but at least I played it on my projector which goes past that. They allow for some damn good AA though and man, they do allow for some fantastic cinematic moments too.

Crysis 3 and Halo 4.

The former I get the technical love, but something about the art direction looks so fucking dull to me. And in the case of Halo 4, it went way too fan fiction scifi in a way that Halo usually wasn't. I prefer Bungie's art team vs 343's in that regard, it gets a lot of love because it's technically better, but the art is fuglier.

Kind of liking what I'm seeing in Halo 5...except I hate the spartan armor for anyone that isn't Chief and Locke.

That's not just my inner fanboy talking. The Unreal 3 engine looked nice at the time but Holy Hell was that art direction bland as ****.

On consoles, the more you increase the resolution and frame-rate, the more you have to sacrifice in terms of other technical graphical details such as geometry, textures, lighting, shading, filtering, anti-aliasing, etc.

The Order sacrifices some resolution and frame-rate so that it can push more advanced graphics in those other areas, making it technically better-looking than any console game that runs at 1080p and/or 60fps.

Eh some of its lighting and how smooth it looks is on point, but then a lot of it actually has pretty bland textures or comes out straight up blurry.

The Order uses 1K textures rather than 2K or 4K textures, but it uses a larger number of tiled 1K textures rather than a smaller number of 2K/4K textures. Its texture capacity comes up to over 2 GB per scene, the highest for any console game so far. But again, that's another issue with consoles, having to balance between texture quality and texture capacity.

Crysis and Crysis 2 and GTA V.

Crysis - b/c it doesn't run very well and things in the distance look off and just the whole thing looks....off. Certain things look good up close, though.

Crysis 2 - it's one of those games that just doesn't look good in motion. It looks more cartoony or something that the original Crysis

GTA V - b/c it was unacceptable for it to dip to like 10fps in the 7th gen consoles. Doesn't matter if it looked decent, good, or great....if it's at 10 fucking fps....it doesn't count.

You can find The Order's environment static but bland? WHAT? How the f is it bland? Its one of the most beautiful settings and one that isn't done very often.
