Games that hugely exceeded expectations, what are they?

I'd like to list some games that were not that hyped but end up blowing everyones expectations out of the water.

Killzone 2

After the first one was abysmal, no one ever thought the series would make a comeback after that. Killzone 2 end up being one of the most critically acclaimed FPS's ever smashing everyones expectations. Many said it would flop just as hard as the first one, those now ate their words.

Uncharted 2

Who would have thought after the 1st Uncharted that the series would became a mega hit? Uncharted 2 blew everyone away with the unprecedented action/adventure cinematic that made it stand out and redefine the genre. Uncharted 2 garnered more awards than any other game in history and is now one of the most discussed franchises out there.

Batman: Arkham Asyslum

One of the most popular superhero's ever in a game set in the universe? Everyone knows comic book turned games never work. But oh how Rocksteady managed to break that myth. The game was every fanboys dream come true. Not to be outdone by it's sequel, Asylum proved that comic book games CAN work. It was considered one of the best action/adventure games and won Rocksteady studio of the year.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

After the original Deus Ex games everyone thought the series are some of the best games ever. When people heard about DE:HR being announced they thought "No way could it top the original". It was called mediocre and average at best. Once the game came out all that talk was put to rest. HR is now considered the best in the series, shattering those fanboys expectations. Not to mention it was Eidos Montreal's first game they have made. One of the best games ever. Period.

What other games had little to no hype that took the gaming industry by storm?

All those games had some of the highest expectations you can get in the video game world:? Might as well have just added Skyrim lol.

For me it's Viewtiful Joe, MADWORLD, and Assassins Creed (for AC it was because I bought it a long while after it came out when I first got my ps3 and everyone talked about it like it was the most boring game of all time)

Read the topic again. Games that have hugely EXCEEDED expectations. As for the hype, I'm talking more about negative hype, I should have mentioned that.

All those games received a **** load of hype.

For me, it has to be Sonic Colors, because only the furries and new age brats were hyping it up when it was announced. The game completely surprised me, because it actually had real improvements, and proved that Sonic Team really was capable of making a good Sonic game.

I guess the other one for me would be Vanquish. I know system wars had a few threads, but it wasn't hyped like a big name franchise. The game wowed me, because it was an adrenaline pumping old school arcadey experience, and so it's hands down my favorite 3rd person shooter of this gen.

Arkham Asylum is the most obvious one. The Witcher as well.

Mario Galaxy.

Also Street Fighter 4, Gears of War 3, and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Dark Souls, Bayonetta, Gears3

Demon's Souls. Maybe TWEWY and Persona 3. Can't remember the hype behind those two games.

All of those games were hyped to hell and back. A game that exceeds expectations is a game that has relativily no hype and is suprisingly good.

The last game I can think of that truely meets those requirement is World in Conflict. Nobody knew what the game was, it kind of just sunk in one day. I got in the beta and thought it was fantastic and was expecting some pretty decent scores, but most people didn't even know what it was. It got a 9.5 when it launched and far exceeded anybody's expectations of the game.

We haven't had such a sleeper hint since. Damnit, I miss 2007.

I would say Dark Souls would be the closest to World in Conflict. That game did have a lot of hype from the mega RPG nerds though.

There weren't really many Demon's Souls fans. Every game is going to have some small group of people who are excited, it's just that the Demon's Souls group posted here on System Wars.

I wouldn't say it was a game that had high expectations for the majority of gamers.

mainly because there were so many posts about how Dark SOuls would be terrible and inferior to Demons Souls, because From "sold out" to MS and 360, that expectations were near zero with so many posts saying the game would be terrible because SOny is not helping them

Then Dark Souls came and was 10x better and bigger than Demons Souls in every way and of course it was then that exceeded expectations a million times over

I agree with a few other posts Bayonetta and Dark Souls. I was not expecting Dark Souls to be as good as it is. I'm really blown away by the game. I eat sleep and breath Dark Souls right now.It's the best game I've played in a long time and is underappreciated by gamers. More people need to play this gem.

Indeed, that games deserves any ammount of sales

I wonder if people dont buy it because they think it is extremely hard, which it is not really, it is just a challenging game in a world of cinematic games for the masses, not a very hard one, just reasonably challenging

Batman: Arkham Asylum: I barely listened to the hype and then when I got the game...Me=Blown Away.

Sims 3: Kind of the same boat as B:AA, all I saw was the trailer and I instantly got it. Infinetly better than what I was expecting.

Super Monday Night Combat: I never understood how all these different mechancics could work in a game. Tower Defence, team/class based, third person shooter? How? Then I got my answer, they work DAMN WELL.

Fate: A present from a friend, didn't know what to think. It said it won the hearts of 4,000,000 people but, hey, numbers can lie, can't they? Then I played the game...and those numbers felt close to home.

RuneScape: For a browser based game I wasn't really excited, turns out for a browser based game...it's quite cool and fun. For me anyways.

Shattered Horizon/Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West: Played them both during the free weekend. They are both excellent and better than what I expected which was...nothing!

Mass Effect, RDR and Skyrim.

Saints Row the third, imo.

Maybe Rayman Origins? I am buying the game in two days for 30, so I dunno :P
