The Ps3
People knew that the PS3 would be awesome
And...4 years later...well...
Just look at the number one console :)
Ps3 for life
I can think of a few, the first to come to mind is Braid because no one heard of it before it came out and it is now considered one of the best games this gen. Another would be Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I thought it was just going to be another dumb cheap horror game and it turned out to be one of, if not the scariest game I have ever played.
This gen? For me it was SMG, SMG2, DKCR and Demons Souls.
I haven't cared for Mario since the SNES and I never really liked 3d platformers in general, but SMG changed all that. Then somehow SMG2 managed to obliterate SMG. Very unexpected on both accounts.
Also the DKC games have never really been good platformers (flame shield engaged) and Retro doesn't really have a track record with side-scrollers or platformers. Yet DKCR is one of the best side scrolling platformers around.
And Demons Souls doesnt need explanation, that game took most of us by surprise.
Of all time though? For me it was Chrono Trigger. I was soooo hyped for the game and yet it still blew away all of my expectations. That never happens lol.

I agree with a few other posts Bayonetta and Dark Souls. I was not expecting Dark Souls to be as good as it is. I'm really blown away by the game. I eat sleep and breath Dark Souls right now. It's the best game I've played in a long time and is underappreciated by gamers. More people need to play this gem.
Indeed, that games deserves any ammount of sales
I wonder if people dont buy it because they think it is extremely hard, which it is not really, it is just a challenging game in a world of cinematic games for the masses, not a very hard one, just reasonably challenging
I hate what Dark Souls has done to me...I can't stop thinking about the game. But be careful with disconnecting/power off to keep your souls...I corrupted my game save, but that just means I get to play it more :-) It is a lot easier the 2nd time through though (meaning starting over not NG+ mode). At least until you get back to where you last were then it gets tough again.Games that exceed expectation
Dark Souls
Bastion
Clash of Heroes (in a HUGE way)
Bayonetta
Games that were a million miles below my expectations
FF13
Kingdoms of Amalur
Uncharted 1-2
MGS4
Infamous 1
Killzone 2-3
loosingENDS
I'd really love a go at your time-machine, kind sir. :|
OT:
Batman Arkham Asylum - Fantastic game and one of the best atmospheric games out there.
MGS 4 - My first 7th gen game, and I did not expect to be blown away as I was....
Crysis Warhead - This game gets little mention around here because all talk about it's bigger brother, but this was definitely the best crysis game.
To The Moon - Cannot explain; play the darn game!
I would have to say Killzone 3, Crysis 2, Batman Arkham City, and FF XIII all disappointed me a bit, some more than others, but the biggest disappointment was Witcher 2. I don't know why it gets so many accolades. The story was interesting, and the game was beautiful, but I do not remember a more frustrating RPG in terms of gameplay. I've heard there have been fixes but I have been too lazy to go back :P
Your right about Killzone 2, my jaw hit the floor by how great it was.I loved Uncharted 1 so I knew the 2nd would be even better, not surpising to me. And I thought Assassin's creed 2 was a great jump in quality, AC 1 was so overrated IMO I have no idea how it got such high scores, it was too repitive. AC 2 was suprising.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
HR is now considered the best in the series
Nanomage
Not really, most of the fans of the original game still feel the first is the best,,and I agree with that as well tbh.
Same here,I loved HR but Deus Ex is still the best in the series. Please Log In to post.
