because they're so fucking hard!
So I enjoy a good challenge when I play games, and for some of them, that's taken to the extreme. The genre that consistently provides me with those type of experiences are shmups, and one game in particular that I'm thinking of when I write this is DoDonPachi Resurrection. What's DoDonPachi? Well, it's one of the most famous bullet hell franchises of all time, and is the poster child of the legendary developer, CAVE. If you're any sort of gaming enthusiast worth his or her salt, you should already be aware of all this though.
So what makes this game so hard, *cough* see for yourself:
It's absolutely pure mayhem, and it will break you far harder than 99% of what most people label as "tough" these days... and I fucking love it. For shmups, I honestly can't play them unless I drink a coffee beforehand, as that's how focused I need to be in order to see everything, but DoDonPachi might as well require a caffeine injection because of the utter chaos and insanity it consists of. Not only do you need to dodge bullets, including squeezing between the tiniest of spaces, no, the real challenge is about obtaining a high score, and you do that by managing your specials and bombs. Deciding when to use them to cancel shots to increase your multiplier, and choosing when to use normal bombs when there's no escape, and managing all of that in your head while, again, dodging a rainbow of bullets coming in at ridiculous speeds, is what makes this game both so addictive and incredibly fun. Oh wait, did I say game? I meant to say games because DoDonPachi Resurrection is actually 8 games, each with their own particular difficulty setting, scoring system, and of course, rocking soundtrack.
Now imagine playing something like that for two to three hours in 80 degree weather at night, and you'll understand where I got that title from, because DoDonPachi will make you sweat.
So that's my favorite hard game. Do you have one or more that you enjoy playing despite how much they make you want to cry? Please, share.
