What games you didn't have any expectations from, gave you a very positive experience?

For me it's Megaman Legends - Picked this up in a bin of used games for the PSone. At that point i hadn't played a Megaman game since Megaman 4 for the NES. Instant classic for me, and the second one was even better in every way.

Crysis 1. Seeing the game, it looked like any other FPS, and, after playing Crysis 2, it was on my meh list. That game is fantastic though. There is nothing else really like it, and I see why people don't like the sequels nearly as much.

Human Revolution.

Scheduled to release more than a decade after the first, developed by a different team that was under Square Enix, with a trailer that looked like it was trying to captivate the average action herperderper gamer. Would've been a perfect recipe for a disaster.

Turns out it was the best game of 2011.

Saints Row The Third. Pre-release it looked like another crappy, trying-too-hard-to-be-funny waste of cash. Ended up being my Game of the Year.

I bought Magicka on a whim last year and it ended up being one of my favorite games last year. I hated it at first because I didn't understand how it played but once I learned the ropes I loved it.

FF13-2. I thought the story was going to drag on and on with nothing really happening just like its prequel. But it was actually a very solid JRPG with some very unique features.

Super Mario Galaxy.

I always disliked 3d platformers and hated the fact that main series Mario went 3d. I didn't like SM64 and I despised Sunshine. Mario was basically dead to me for two generations.

...then SMG and SMG2 come along to blow me away.

Also Demon Souls. The videos just looked boring and I thought it would be an extremely generic Japanese take on the wrpg. Even so, I heard a lot of good from some friends so I ended up being an early adopter. Turned out the game was fvcking great!

Funny thing is most people still assumed it was garbage. Trying to convince them otherwise was like pulling teeth. Now its one of the most overrated games around lol.

Katamari Damacy was also a shock. No need to explain really, just play it.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. I still have zero interest in the universe and the name made it sound generic as hell, but it's one of the most enjoyable, original TPSs I've played in a long time, both on and offline.

Crysis. I bought it mainly to test the graphics of my new PC, playing through the first few levels I thought it sucked, as I went through it like a regular linear FPS. Then, after beating the game and then playing through the whole thing again, I concluded that it is one of the best first person shooters of this generation.

FEAR 2. My brother had told me it was bad, and I had also read primarily bad stories about it on SW, but playing it myself, I discovered that, apart from a couple of design issues, it's actually a more than decent follow-up to the original (which was a masterpiece).

It surprised me too.

The TV show sucked peaches but the games are really good.

Another one is The Darkness 2, the developer made some pretty terrible games so I expected it to suck. Best game I played this year.

Arkham Asyslum-I was never into that whole superhero thing,so I thought it'd be just another mediocre/bad superhero game.Still, after all the positive reviews and community feedback, decided to give it a go.Loved it,easily one of the best games of 2009...

Demon's Souls-I got the game just because I wanted to see the infamous difficulty, thought I'm in for a frustrating mess that I'll get rid off in a few days, but in the end,I got my hands on one of the best games I ever played, gameplay mechanics work nearly perfect, its fair challenge, and has a great game-world,that encourages careful exploration...

Human Revolution-After playing first Deus Ex,I thought no game would ever come close to it,and thought HR will be just some reboot that ultimately ends up mocking the great series. But I was really, really wrong. While I wouldn't call HR better than the first Deus Ex(which is one of my fav games of all time, btw),it sure did come close, and proved to be a worthy sequel...

Spec Ops: The Line- When I first saw it, the game looked like any old cover shooter, and since it was a modern military cover shooter set in the middle east (even if it is Dubai) I didn't have high hopes, especially since it was the resurrection of a mediocre franchise. Turns out the gameplay is pretty solid (if average) while the story and setting really stand out. Yahtzee recommending it as well is some damn high praise.

Assassin's Creed II- I thought the first was a repetitive snoozefest, but Assassin's Creed II did away with the repetition. It ended up being more linear, but as a result it was more thrilling, the story more focused and well written, and better ine very way. Its a shame it didn't have the open ended assassinations, but that was the only memorable thing I loved from the first game.

Medal of Honor: Airborne- Actually nabbed this during the Steam Sale, it was cheap and MoH hasn't been good in a long time. I know some of the latest PS2 ones and the recent reboot left me feeling disappointed, but Airborne is actually really fun and refreshing compared to the linear shooters of today. The graphics held up well, the gunplay is solid (if lacking thanks to the oddly implemented RPG unlock mechanic), and it lets you decide where you want to land, what order you want to take the objectives, when you jump and what weapons you use. Its refreshing and fun, even if it does have its flaws.

I'm pretty sure 99% of the DA fanbase thinks this. And I do find the thread title slightly strange because I only buy games I expect to be good. Hell, I expected DA:O to be great. But it kicked ass repeatedly.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

GamerwillzPS

This.

When I started playing not too long ago I thought it was just an fps with meh worthy controls. But then I continued playing and that all changed. I got used to the conrols, the rpg elements kicked in, it has a good story (from what I've played), and voice acting ect. Just need to play some more.

Kid Icarus: Uprising. I was originally concerned over the controls (using the stylus as a reticle, as well as using the 3DS stand to play the game) and the initial bad voice-acting, I just got used to the controls and find the voice-acting better than I thought. It quickly became one of my most played 3DS games.

MGS4 - Did'nt expect to be that much of a masterpiece and it tied everything together including bring old characters in. Truly Epic. One of the Pinnacle game of this generation.

Dead Space - The 'Resident Evil' of this gen. The monsters and design was surreal and sci-fi setting was great. The game's universe and plot is expanding to comics, movies, animated comics and spin off games and viral stuff.
EA did well with this one.

Batman Arkham Asylum - What looked like an average game but with Batman characters in it turned out to be actually amazing.

Team Fortress 2 - Probably the most fun game there is. Did not like the cartoon graphics at first but its really addictive.

Shenmue - Just looked like a big JRPG but it fact, was the best adventure game and the most realistic type of game at the time. It bought the term immersion, to gaming. And at a time, it was the most expensive game made, no wonder sega went bankrupt.

Human Revolution - I thought it would be a shadow of it's former self just like the first sequel, but it was a really good game.

Vanquish - Thought it would be another generic cover based TPS, but it was different.

Terraria! This game was terrible advertised when it first game out. My first impression of the first trailer and pictures I saw

made me think it was EXACTLY like minecraft but in 2-D. Gladly it is a completely different game that minecraft, I was just sooooo

surprised that it had A LOT of RPGness build into it. Where Minecraft was all about building and mining, while Terraria is a game

that is all about getting better armor/weapons/spells/tools to fight deeper into hell and all the bosses in the game.

If everyone didn't advertise the game as "A 2-D minecraft" I would have

bought the game day 1.

From this gen it'd probably be Deus ex HR and Arkam Asylum. Didn't think there could be another good Deus Ex game, and certainly didn't think there'd ever be a really good batman game. Both fantastic surprises.
