Well gaming is certainly over all a lot easier now than it has ever been. So there's a huge lack of challenge.

There is a lot of variety at the moment. If you limit yourself to looking at only the FPS, sandbox ("GTA") genre then you probably won't find it. If you're not having fun with what's available on the market then try to find something else.

@Celtic_34: Honestly Celtic, it feels like you havent' discovered Indie games yet... Go buy, brothers, Rogue Legacy and The Swapper and you'll be back on track... AAA games are the dullz now a day.

Probably hitting diminishing returns with budgets.. I guess it's possible to have ground breaking gameplay by ultimate mish mash of genres but it'll be so expensive and limited to a few hardware..

It can be very subjective tho.. someone's jaded and "old", someone's just starting to get into gaming then enjoying, etc.

IMO, electronic gaming will just keep expanding but the main genres are going to have less and less break throughs but combinations will be solidified as well as difference is presentation getting more polished (VR, 3D, etc.)..

Matrix will be the end all be all as far as entertainment goes.

@ j2zon2591

the Matrix wasn't an entertainment concept. It simulated life. The ups and the downsides. and thanks to 8th gen being nearly the same as 5th Gen, it might never happen. Not until we scrap that damn Controller. I would actually like to see microsoft make the Kinect its own seperate console, latching it on to the TV Box One is only holding back proogress.

Sometimes I wonder if thats what Nintendo wouldve done if the got to PrimeSense 1st (the company Microsoft Invested in in 2005 to make the Kinect) They were pretty ballsy with motion controls.

I think gaming is better than ever. There's a bigger price range, so everyone can game according to their budget. There's a greater diversity of experiences. Mechanics generally feel much better than they used to. Production values have increased exponentially in quality. More games allow you to play the way you want. A lot less exclusives, meaning most games can be enjoyed by everyone.

Pretty much nailed it, Sushiglutton. I personally have a gaming PC, PS3, 3DS, and a Wii U. There's plenty of diversity if you have multiple platforms. TC, I think you're just suffering from "gamer fatigue". Maybe take a little break from gaming?

If you want fresher ideas, play indie games.

Otherwise gaming is just going through the same thing other mediums tend to go through. The bigger the budget, the safer the game idea is going to be.

This.

First person shooters have become too mainstream, that's why.

One complaint I have is the cutscenes are becoming out of control. I know games like JRPGs tend to have long cutscenes, which is fine, but like some FPS are becoming more of a Steven Seagal movie than a videogame.

Are some games uninspired? Sure they are, but you can't say that about all games. Saying Watch Dogs is a GTA clone is stupid. I'm sorry, but then you could just use that for all Open World games. They are different. Annual releases suffer most from this, and i agree with you on that. But you can't just claim that a game is a clone when it's a new IP

Gamings always been about money and it's better than ever. You just aren't 5 years old anymore, hence less "magical".

Not always... back then it started as something people or developers loved to do. They enjoyed creating games.

People were literally sitting in their basements creating games cause they loved doing that. Do you remember "Sierra" the company was founded by a husband and wife working from their home. Wife would create the characters and write the story while her husband would write the computer code.

Thing is all that changed because companies saw profit, now there are people employed in the industry that have nothing to do with the industry.

I feel that the game industry is like the movie industry (Hollywood) now. Games need to be big budget to get players attention. Bigger game studios are now publicly traded company. The storylines need to formula-tic to have appeal to everyone. Ten years ago, gaming felt like playing in an art-form. Now, every other game feels like a Michael Bay movie.

Is there a serious lack of creativity in particular genres? Yeah.

Do handhelds and light PC gaming, having a plethora of genres and niche games not available on consoles help me find a way around that? Yes as well.

but even those arent new experiences. indie is just a lot of side scrollers or puzzle games.

agreed. i remember gaming when i was younger and getting bored or utterly frustrated at technical design elements such as the camera, unfixable glitches and clunky mechanics.

creativity isnt where it used to be thanks to the high budgets and $60 tag that comes with games and gamers not buying as many games.

That's a terrible, and frankly stupid, oversimplification.

That is SUCH a bunch of crap. Gaming has ALWAYS been a business and has ALWAYS been primarily about money.

You want handcrafted games by 1 or 2 amateurs/enthusiasts? There are more of those then ever. Hello, Steam Greenlight and humble indie bundles and Kickstarter and Xbox Indie games.

You pining for "the good old days"? Guess what, Nintendo and Sega and Atari were all giant corporations back then too. Ea and Activision were around back then too. Sequels were rehashed into the ground back then too. Too much COD? There were 6 Megaman games on NES. Along with 3 Marios, 3 Contras, 3 Castlevanias, 3 Final Fantasies, etc. Too many crappy movie tie in games? There were at least half a dozen different Jurassic Park games released with the movie, and they all sucked. Not enough innovation? Every second game on SNES was a Mario or Street Fighter clone. Gaming too expensive? You can buy games on Steam sale for a couple of euros that have more content than 100 NES or SNES games. Too gimmicky? Yeah the Power Glove and Dance Mats were around back then too. Sick of patches? Broken games back then were NEVER fixed.

Nice story bout Sierra. What about Notch, creating Minecraft. Garry, creater of Garry's Mod. 2D Boy, a couple of guys who made World Of Goo (IGN Wii GOTY). What about Team Meat, another couple of guys who made Super Meat Boy and the Binding Of Isaac? Don't they count as nice little stories of small team success?

Take off the rose goggles. Don't be blinded by nostalgia. "The good old days" rarely were. The current day can have problems sure. Pretending that the past was perfect is NOT the answer. 10 year old me would have died if he saw a game like Last Of Us or GTAV or Dark Souls II. How could gaming advance so far and get so much better? And how could so many gamers NOT enjoy it!?

Its not just Games, The Gaming Audience has changed too...... For the worse.

It seems like Console gamers have also begin to favour playing online instead of people within close Proximity.

And whats with PC Gamers wanting things to be more convenient ? Thats what consoles are for, the whole point of having a PC is to Customize and mod The Living shit out of it, it was an Anorak's wet dream. Lately people just aren't that interested in that anymore, more convenience means less Options.

less options?? i liked lying in bed with an xbox controller and a few clicks on the mouse then i could play loads of games on my tv through steams big picture mode, eg im playing alan wake on it and just before that i played from start to finish dust an elysium tail and all the games i play like that look awesome at 1080p with max aa and settings on my 32 inch tv and any other pc centric games look awesome on my 24 inch monitor at 1200p with the normal mouse and keyboard controls.

less choice is total bogus...

edit : in the last week i have completed ys 1 and 2 and origins and oath in felghana steam versions as well :)

damn i guess been 29 year old makes me a bit too old to post in this section lol i more or less just play what ever i feel like at the time on any system , my magical pc with a 3.2ghz quad core and 8 gig ddr3 and a 270x radeon 2 gig ddr5 goes unused at times,

as i can do general net stuff on my phone or tablet and i tend to play my consoles a lot depending on what game i feel like playing, and some times if im hooked on a console game eg dark souls or disgaea d2 i will play them on the tv and have my pc stream stuff while im grinding oh and i just spent 108 hours on bravely default the other week :)

yeh pc is better for hardware especially if you put your own rig together but theres still a place for consoles and just before any one asks out of 240 games on steam over 100 of mine are pad supported :)

If you really wana impress me then do all that without steam. Steam does all that shit 4 you, and it does it only the way it wants. It can burn for all I care.
