The little uber sandbox creativy source mod that went to be a commercial indie game has broken hte 1 million units sold mark.

They even included an actual timeline graph of their sales. You can see how much steam sales effect the game:

Pretty sure they are

Most of the spike look like they take place toward the end of each year. The Winter sales. With 2011 and 2010 being exceptions.

Pretty dissapointing i will agree, considering alot of these sales are at a very low price with a very poor profit this really isnt so impressive for one of the biggest indie games....considering it was pretty regularly in the top 10 best sellers over the past few years it just goes to show you theres not as many purchases on steam as one might think!

I highly doubt the indie dev is crying about it. Because of Steam, they sold godly amount more copies than they would have otherwise. The developer still soaks in a large profit margin with each steam sale.

I purchased it just after the 2010 Summer Sale I payed $24 and got Garry's Mod bundled with Team Fortress 2.

I think the reason it took this long is because it requires another Source game to run. You need to have the SDK from the Source game you purchased it you got Portal for Free like I did you didn't get the SDK I had to purchase it with Team Fortress 2 before I could actually purchase Garry's Mod.

Edit* When I tried to purchase Garry's Mod by itself without Team Fortress 2 I kept getting an error when I tried to purchase it because it said I had to have another Source game to purchase before I tried to purchase Garry's Mod.

Very true, and with TF2 now free, this isn't a problem anymore.

considering if you've ever played garry's mod a lot of people didnt adopt ten to start off with due to it being pay to play.But tbh it keeps on improving and getting better.

To be honest i'd rather see games like this get recoqnition its effectively a game where you can do as you please, i've done some pretty funny things in it have some really classic mods (CoD MW2 killstreak for example the ac-130 in Compound and spawning a ton of antlions is hillarious aswell as a lot of ones that build the creativity tools much better and add more in.)

Hope the trend of sales keeps increasing since it utilizes the Source engine better than any other source releases in my honest opinion.

I remember when gm was just starting out. It used to be such a pain in the ass trying to learn things.

I thought it would have had more sales after all these years, but its not too bad still.

Put at it this way then: The game was released in December 2004, and had its Steam release in 2006. Over 6.5 million people bought Half Life 2 by December of 2008, and seeing as how Steam has only grown over time, the sales are probably past ten million. That's ten million people, at least, who have a Source Engine game, therefore able to access Garry's Mod. Indie game or not, GM's sales are very lousy.

Forza 3 sold under four million, but it came out in 2009.

Garry's Mod just got past one million, and it came out in 2004.

Garry's Mod is on a platform with a userbase in the hundreds of millions.

I mistook the game's install base with the platform's user base. My bad.

But still, Half Life 2 has likely broken ten million sales. Team Fortress 2 has also sold a ton. So has Left 4 Dead. So has Portal. So has Counter Strike Source. There's a lot of people who have at least one game that uses the source engine. Garry's Mod install base is massive.

What you're not getting is that Forza 3 sold more than three million in a matter of two years. Those are great sales. Garry's Mod broke one million sales in nearly seven years. You cannot say, with a straight face, that those are good sales.

It's got a very dedicated, and vocal fanbase is all.

I mean on the sites I go to barely anyone mentions games like WoW, or CS, or Halo in comparison to Garry's Mod, or Killing Floor which are both much less popular games.

It's extremely good for Garry considering he has reaped a huge amount of the money from the sales. A million is very good for any indie game.
