its a hit or miss developer. they made the first 2 brothers in arms and borderlands franchise...but they also had their clunkers. can't wait for borderlands 3

You think that game was going to be any good?
Anyways, only two games; I'll wait for when they have a bit more on their track record before I decide to throw them out the door.

Only two games? They've done more than Borderlands. They also made the Brothers in Arms games, and the original Half Life expansions, Blue Shift and Opposing Force, plus the Half Life ports for Dreamcast and PS2. And they worked on the retail version of original Counterstrike (before Source), and CS: Condition Zero. Then there's Duke Nukem Forever, and Aliens: Colonial Marines.Â

Basically, because DNF sucked ass. They decided to shut down this free game because people might not buy their own game.

Are you freaking kidding me? I was really looking forward to this.
Majorly bummed out now.
EDIT: after reading that entire article Gearbox should have thrown the devs some money to make it a gearbox game, just shutting something that ambitious down is wasteful, after the disaster that was duke nukem forever this would have been the perfect way to reinvigorate the franchise.
Pretty sure Dukes dead in the water now, I'm surprised they haven't gone after the Graphics mods for the original D3D either.

Oh okay. So just the two  bad  games? :P
Yeah, I'm not prepared to totally shit on them just because of that, either. DNF wasn't entirely their fault, and I seem to remember liking the Brothers in Arms games when I played the first 2 years ago. Their handling of this Duke Nukem Reloaded situation is a bummer, though. Same with the ridiculous downgrading of A:CM between the E3 reveal and the actual release.
Company can't accept its failure, continues to be a dick about it.
KungfuKitten
At least they allowed the criticism of DNF. I know of companies who literally block out all negative feed on their games so unless you have good things to say they will not even consider your opinion valid.

Imo that should be illegal, because it is about a paid product. Maybe it should fall under something alike false advertising. I know it's their forum their rules, something almost considered holy in the USA, but I care more about honesty than ownership. Especially when it comes to companies who are out to get your money, and to deliver as little as possible in return.[QUOTE="Maroxad"]
Borderlands is fun with friends, but the thing that makes those games fun is not the games itself but rather the fact that you are playing with your friends. If you understand what I mean.
And the borderlands IP is not even worthy of polishing "those boring Souls games"' boots.
JangoWuzHere
Any game is fun if you play it with friends. I find the co-op stuff in Borderlands 2 chaotic and pretty bad.Â
That is the point ;)
Any game can be fun with friends. So Borderlands being fun with friends isnt really something to brag about or me saying the game is good in any way.

Not necessarily. I know of games that even with friends are still pretty bad.
By that logic, also, does that mean every co-op game is bad?
no love for brothers in arms? The only games they did well were Borderlands....nothing new here

Not that I actively endorse this, but it's common practice in the industry.
I've been burnt by situations like this a number of times - (stares at Squeenix) - but it's not really easy to judge from a consumer POV.
Â
Also, I'll have to credit them for Borderlands 2 + expansions. It's really good, even solo.
They continuously lie to gamers and shut down promising projects in favor of their own crap. I'm done with Gearbox. I bought and loved their HL expansions and BIA games. But I'm not buying a game from them ever again, even if Borderlands 2 does look good.

Halflife: Opposing Force. Brother In Arms: Road to Hill 30.
Another reason Valve is awesome they had no problems with Black Mesa Source remake all other companies shut down the remakes of old games bastards.
They have to protect their IP, it's as simple as that. Those cases are always unfortunate but it happened several times already in the past.
Here is a good article about the problematic:

Borderlands was top 5 new series this generation. Only Uncharted and Mass Effect were better new IPs. Yes better than those boring Souls games.

Terrible taste confirmed
yeah i'm not one to rag on someone's tastes, but i will say that person has a very unique preference. They have to protect their IP, it's as simple as that. Those cases are always unfortunate but it happened several times already in the past.

Nothing wrong with protecting your IP from crap that would give it a bad name.
But don't shut down a quality mod, release a crappy game and than call shutting down that mod protecting your IP. On the contrary: allowing that mod and scrapping Duke Nukem Forever would have protected their IP. Now they've damaged it.
This mod is still running.

Say what you will about the graphics, still rather play this than most of this generations shitty shootters.
(hint: I mean all console shooters)

Don't get me wrong, I really looked forward to this project and was disappointed when it was shut down. But having read into several similar stories I came to the conclusion that it's just a tricky legal situation in any case.
eh borderlands 1 and 2 justify my love of gearbox and @Duvalmagic constantly releasing shift keys make the execs okay in my book.
Meh, BL2 is still awesome, so they are alright by me.
Well except for the paying for single new characters thing, and not having everything in that so called Season Pass. That's some bullshit. Nickel and diming in a game is one of the most ridiculous practices created in this era of gaming.

Team Fortress?
R4gn4r0k
Team Fortress was a quake mod, and later it was remade as a HL mod called Team Fortress Classic, what about it ?
It's a mod that Valve made...
Fine, they did start with Half Life but as you said Tripwire and that other company started as simply modders and there is no denying Valve's strong support and backbone in modding. Also, while they may not have started modding games a few of their games wouldn't be around if not for modding (CounterStrike, Half Life ((started as a mod I believe but soon got picked up and backed up to be a full fledge game)), Team Fortress, Dota 2 ((not their game but you get the idea))).
