Why did you even expect the core gameplay to be changed? With that formula they were already highly successful... no way changing it can make them any more.foxhound_fox
I expect more out of a $60 game.
When was the last time you paid $60 for an expansion pack?
Okay, let me get this straight. You guys want sequels to be radically different than the previous installment, while games like Nuts and Bolts is totally different then the N64 games you people want them to go back to the old, archaic formula? :|
You have got to be kidding me.
You obviously haven't play Gears 2 because it is defianetly a sequel and has tons of new gameplay elements like the meatshield, new executions and an awesome depth. Games like Wrath of the Lich King are expansion packs.
Obviously your expectations were off. Why would they drastically change the core gameplay when the first game was so wildly successful? Come to think of it, they DID change a lot about the gameplay. There were many more vehicular sequences and many more boss battles.
Aside from the core gameplay, they improved the story tremendously, improved the graphics, made the environments more interesting, and added to the already excellent multiplayer with new modes that are actually fun to play, plus support for bots.
I'm not sure what you were expecting them to do, but I found plenty to like in the sequel. Sounds like you have the problem, not the devs.

Look at GTA IV. It's a sequel that doesn't feel like an expansion pack. Same with MGS4, SMG, Halo 3 etc.

If you couldn't find $60 worth of enjoyment out of Gears 2, the whole series is obviously not your type of game(which you would have known after playing the first game), so don't buy it.
Also, calling it an expansion pack is laughable. How many expansion packs are longer than the original game, along with bringing in new modes and play styles?
Thank you for your well thought out reply.
I will ponder it over during my afternoon tea.

What did you expect him to say? Youa re askign for a sequel to a game to be completely different than the original... so perhaps they should have made it a tactical shooter like rainbow 6, or MGS, and comlpetely abandon their original gameplay style? It was gears that brought pop 'n shoot to the mainstream, so .... what... what do you want the developers to change to make it feel like a sequel? Completely different gameplay mechanics, with an unrelated storyline, and totalyl different characters, and a different name like Pears of the Orchard 2?
This thread = EPIC FAIL lol

Damn near all expansion packs do that. :|

Definition of full on sequal:
new campaign
new gameplay mechanics
Gears 2:
new campaign
new mechanics
revamped multiplayer
totally brilliant addition of Horde.
-----------------
I think gears 2 exceeded what a regular sequal usually entails.
If you think gears 2 should change core gameplay mechanics, go play a different game.Â

Yeah look at games like gta4, mgs4, smg and halo 3. Notice something in common? They are all sequels to games on last gen consoles so of course such graphical upgrades are expected. Yes, let's look at games such as gta4, mgs4 and smg. Notice something in common? They are all sequels to games that have been critisised for having bad gameplay mechanics. Gears of War suffered no such complaints, the same with Halo 2.

Halo 3 felt like a sequel? Same sh***y gameplay again? I **** on your opinion.
I don't believe you put any effort into the Gears of War 2 campaign. Myself, I didn't really like Gears of War all that much, it felt a tad repetitive, and loose. Gears of War 2 however, changed all of that, with more variety, and a tighter gameplay mechanic and story. The core gameplay is similar obviously, it's a sequel, not a new IP. You would be stupid to expect anything else. However, I believe they added enough to change it up, otherwise it wouldnt' be getting so many high scores.Â
You said you expect more from a $60 dollar game, but you fail to elaborate on how much you do expect. Because it's hard to say a package with a variety of modes in multiplayer, a longer campaign, with more variety along with a better story, isn't worth the asking price. Weak attempt at trolling as far as I can tell. You obviously did not spend enough time on this "expansion pack" to call it so. Along with others bringing up the point, that it is longer, with more modes etc. Never seen an expansion pack like that.Â
The clear explanation is that this is not your type of game, why did you get it in the first place? That was your mistake not ours, stop whining.Â

Huh? Halo 3 was accused of being an expansion pack. Same with Halo 2. There was no change to the core gameplay since Halo 1. Maybe GT5P is only an expansion.... they've been relasing 'expansions' for the franchise since the first one. The same criticism can be leveled at Rock Band, KOTOR, SOCOM, and many sequels in popular franchises.
Realistically, Gears 2 takes a new direction with the storytelling style. The environments are more wide open then before. They've added enough new gameplay elements to make it feel fresh. Horde mode itself is a welcome addition.  Enough has changed in Gears 2 to earn itself the status of sequel.

No, both a expansion packs pretending to be sequels.
Half-Life 2 is a sequel. Fallout 3 is a sequel.
Either you haven't played it or you came in wanting it to be bad. THe game improves on everything: story (granted easy to beat gears1 on that front), More varied gameplay, better weapon selection, more varied enemies, way better graphics (trust me i played gears 1 a few weeks before gears 2 came out and it is rasically different), Much more varied locations, HORDE MODE IS EFFING AMAZING!!Â
Seriously you must hate life to think gears 2 is an expansion pack.

Good for them for being patient enough to create true sequels.
Epic should've called Gears 2 "Gears of War: Retribution" or something like that and saved the real Gears 2 for the next Xbox.

To be honest you might want to take your fanboy goggles off because they're not that different graphically.

So why dont you tell us what you think a true Gears of War sequal should entail. Perhaps you'll realize that you have a convaluted sense of the difference between an expansion and a sequal..which led you to create this stupid thread and get into pointless arguements with everyone on SW. It seems that everyone argueing with you agrees on what a sequal entails and you're the only one with a different understanding? At least explain yourself. Half life 2 is a sequal, Fallout 3 is a sequal.. Gears 2 is not a sequal.. clarify why??
There is no way that devs were going to change core gameplay the way you expect them to because the original gear core mechanics are golden. Changing the core of the game would be called creating a new ip.
Example? You think Fallout 3 is a true sequal. But original fallout fans DONT consider Fallout 3 as a sequal because its so different from the series.
Â
Good. Why would we want it any different?
Men in 4 inch thick armour chainsawing giant aliens sounds good to me :)

Oh and you forgot the NEW multiplayer modes (Submission, Wingman, Horde) so there are some changes to the core gameplay :)

Gears 2 improved the graphics quite a bit, for example, draw distance, and dstance blur, sharper textures, better character lighting, destructable cover, improved water physics, better AI, horde mode, no more frame rate problem, more detailed environments, floating 'stuff' such as papers, fire flares, bugs...
Thats the improvements for GRAPHCIS ONLY. Now add to that all new music, all new character voice acting scenes and cut scenes, new campaign, a campaign that is twice as long as the first game, better pacing for the campaign, new multiplayer modes, horde mode, tweaked multiplayer reactions (ie bullets slow enemies waling speed), chainsaw duels, new weapons, tweaks to the cover system...
This shoudl be touted as ears of war 3 technically, the improvement list is huge for this game, and anyoen who says it looks jsut liek the first one, has obviously never played the two games one after the other, its quite noticable.

My roommate just brought home Gears 2 yesterday and while it looks good it's not head and shoulders above Gears 1. It's as much expansion pack as a lot of PC expanion packs if you just look at it from length and content added but in all honesty in this generation it's a sequel.
