Gears 2 is way too linear and scripted for my liking.

I just played it for the first time today for a few hours.

Although what's there is decent enough I just felt like I was going through the motions and I never really felt like I was in control of my game experience.

I'd much rather play a game where I'm put into the level and then I get to choose how I play it and the exact route I take to get to the end point and what I do on the way there etc.

I wasn't even that impressed by the graphics to be brutally honest.

It's like an average game dressed up in lots of technology and this big expensive production but at no point did I ever really feel like I was actually having fun.

Like I said, I was just going through the motions.

Don't really see what all the fuss is about with this game and especially when there are so many other great looking games out there this gen so surely people can't be that blinded by the graphics engine.

I'm certainly not excited for GoW3 after this.

Just putting that out there.

Edit/Note: Just because I say it's "too linear and scripted" that doesn't mean I don't like any games that aren't open world. Nor does it mean that I'm saying there's something wrong with games being scripted and linear per say. There's lots of great games that are pretty "linear" and "scripted", but GoW2 is just TOO linear and scripted, and far too forced imo. The way exact it's done in GoW2 just doesn't feel that satisfying or fun imo.

so the lesson here is a tps is not a sandbox game?

in gta or saints row or others like them you pick how you accomplish your mission. in 95% of fps and tps you just don't.

that can't have come as a suprise right?

linearity in Gears isn't a problem at all

i'm not speaking for the OP obviously...

my beef with Gears 2 was it totally abandoned the apocalyptic tone from the first game, it was more like a Call of Duty game if you know what i mean (not saying COD style is bad, but we see enough of that every year)

By they way,

Just because I said it's too linear and scripted that doesn't mean all I'm looking for is open world games.

The Halo games are not open world games but they feel and are far less linear and scripted than GoW2, for example.

Now I'm sure you'd all probably prefer a third person shooter or third person action game example but the exact game I picked is not that important.

It's just to illustrate that not every game that isn't forced and linear has to automatically be an open world game.

GoW2 regardless of the genre it's in is just a little too scripted, linear and forced imo.

Yep and I'm sick of it too. I made it 2 hours into god of war 3 and tossed it asside. I'm so bored with this generation of games I'm going back and playing old ones. I just rediscoverd Metroid Prime all over again.

I like Gears style though, its jump in and play and instant fun. I don't mind linear games here and there and I love open world sand box games too for that matter buts its all about frame of mind :). Crysis was actually an example of a happy medium for me, its still linear but you don't feel fenced in.

TOO linear and scripted.

I didn't say there was anything wrong per say with linear and scripted games.

Gears 2 is however TOO linear and scripted imo and it just wasn't really any fun going through the game because of this.

It was really just a matter of going through the motions imo.

I never said I was expecting an open game (I'm assuming you mean open world). I just don't have fun in games when they feel way too linear and scripted and this was one such case.

Thus far, I've preferedthe more linear games and a few very scripted games like Gears of War 2, Devil May Cry 1/3/4, Metal Gear Solid 3, Ninja Gaiden Series, God of War Series, COD4, Uncharted 2 and RE4. I found them to be much more engaging, cinematic, and appealing than the non linear/open ended/sandbox titles like GTA Series, World of Warcraft, Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed, Infamous, JRPGs in general, but they seem to be trying with Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, Crysis and Red Dead Redemption.

I have been buying up games that I decided to hold off on lately and just picked Gears 2 up for $15.00. I am not a huge Gears fan, but I think I'll dig it for that much.
