Those are nice...Rage had some great looking sun / light effects also. Not to mention fire that actually looked like fire, with heat distortion and all.

It definately looks nice. One thing I found in Uncharted 3's godrays is that you can see them from all angles, and they have hard edges, but gears managed to get soft edges and make them only visible when looking at the sun. Honestly, the softness makes them look proper.

UC3's are definitely baked so hard, the edges so sharp and when you look directly into them, nothing happens because there was nothing there to start off with in the first place

Gears 3 is stunning graphically. Horde mode is awesome. The one game that got me away from Forza 4 :P

Yeah, Gears of War 3 has some amazing lighting and the scene in that video was one of those "holy crap, they did this on a console?" moments for me.

There's no discounting it. Gears of War 3 is an amazing looking game from top to bottom.

Uncharted doesn't belong in anything with "Realtime" in it

Gears 3 may be the best looking console video game I have ever seen. The amount of detail in the art is amazing.

Yeah. UE3's lightmass tech is amazing.

Not that it has the best lighting overall though, it just has a different approach than UC3, GOW 3 and KZ3.

It does have the best shadows in any console game, easily.

I hate sunshafts in general. Most of the time they don't look realistic at all, it's just a way for devs to go "oh man dat lighting sooooo cooooool". Crysis 1 is about the maximum level of sunshaftiness I can take, Crysis 2 and Gears 3 are just ridiculous.

troll harder. even if the events are scripted, they're still real-time and not a cutscene. in the Gears series, you watch as a tower collapse in a cutscene. in Uncharted, you're in the building, controlling Drake as he escapes the collapsing building. there's a big difference. the biggest moments in Uncharted, Naughty Dog lets you play in those moments. the burning chateau, the sinking cruise ship, the falling airplane, etc.

You know, I noticed it and never really thought about it much considering I play mostly on PC and that just seems normal to me. But now to you mention it, for a console game that is VERY impressive! I may replay it to take more notice, I was too busy enjoying the action at the time and did not stop to take in the scenery.

Unreal's method of lightshafts aren't too taxing, even the IOS version of UE3 supports them.
