Madden came out late August. Gears came out on the 20th. Madden had the whole month to sell while Gears only had 10 days. This doesn't really speqk for the popularity of Gears vs Madden.
sports game is the second largest genre for video games(the largest if wasn't for COD) madden, NBA, Fifa, UFC, FIGHT NIGHT always sold upon million copies and they come every year!

Kinda weird because neither I nor anyone I know plays sports games, so I feel strange when I hear about a game no one I know has played selling millions.

The only EA Sports titles I ever do buy is the Fight Night, SSX and Skate series (which don't come out every year like the "major" sports titles do) so I guess you could say I "appreciate" these games more than the almighty sacred cows known as Madden or NBA :P. Anyway, it's to be expected...I mean, the NFL is pretty much THE sport in America, which also has games that span across every console available and hardcore football fans are more than willing to get their copy.

Rugby also came before reular football (soccer). So that is why it is called football. It is the most popular sport in the US and its pretty popular in canada too, please dont act like it is some lesser sport.

They call it football bc the length of the ball is 12 inches. Also off topic but the brits came up with the name soccer.
