Using the shotgun. It takes skill to not aim with it and just fire from the waste while trying to dodge your enemies fire and melee.
Also the torque bow. You have to get the timing right and also be able to aim just a bit infront of anyone that is moving so the arrow will penetrate the enemy. It's one of the hardest weapons to aim with. And a truly skilled person can get an active reload on it and shoot at at the ground as the enemy comes closer and as he runs over it BOOM he's done.
The Hammer of Dawn. Finding the right placement in time is very hard especially under pressure. Once you find the designated target your opponent might have already moved from there. You have to plan your attack very quickly with the hammer.
The Lancer. When you're about to get ambushed by shotgun freaks then the lancer is the best weapon to kill them before they get to you and kill you. Especially after the update which increased the lancer's power. It's actually very hard to keep your aim on the moving target and to take him out.
The revolver and pistol. Getting a headshot with those things is a sign of a master or a really lucky person.
Basically every other weapon. All weapons are unique in this game. And you need to learn how to use all of them. Not to mention that while you are shooting you have to learn how to take cover effectively, get active reloads for the upper hand, escape times of trouble, revive your friends, and to work as a team.
If you want to die and lose, then yea, it takes little skill to do that. But if you actually WANT TO SUCEED and WIN, then it takes great skill and knowledge of the game (as well as the maps and all the hiding spots, weapons, choke points, etc in the maps).

uMMM look at my gamertag ive beaten the game on INSANE
i have almost every achievement besides SERIOUSLY, and this is ANNEX
trust me as a veteran of this game , im not just some ps3 fanboy i have played gears extensively and have REAL complaints
If you have put so many hours into it then you are obviously enjoying it. Chainsaw kills are rare nowadays and Granade tags are sure suicide. (Though you can usually ge ta kill). The lag issue is a problem but it doesnt completely kill the fun. I dont mind dieing a few times a day because of lag.

of course. the game is won by whoever has the better internet connection, not whoever has more skill.
Not true lag is a factor but not that big.

You probally just can't handle the truth that gears is bringing to the table.
I agree to a point, the game doesn't take much skill...once your used to the controls, theres not much beyond that. Its just DUCK and shoot. Every time i beat gears and went to a more harder difficulty the game became easier and easier for me...To a point where it gets boring after awhile. I honestly expect more storywise. Gears just uses many ALREADY USED ideas and puts it together in a neat package....the game plays well. but just doesn't last.-Maddog-
but... but... this was Game of the Year.

All good points, as well as what others have said. The thing is - Gears of War is NOTa precise game and should NOT be taken seriously or played competitively. The Host Advantage. The randomness. The "dice roll" moments. The bullet lag.
How many times has this happened to you - you come up behind an enemy, put your shotgun right in his back, pull the trigger and - nothing - only to have him spin around and 1-shot you down with a blind fire shot?
How about this one - you see a guy coming up to you, so you sit and wait behind a corner, he comes around, you fire and he kills you, even though his character is facing 90deg away from you (left or right)?
What about when you get in a shotgun "dance" with an enemy and he kills you even though (on your screen) he is in the middle of a reload?
I can't tell you the THOUSANDS of times these types of moments have happened to me playing Gears of War. Its is all due to the lag induced from the Host Side Hit Detection as well as the randomness PROGRAMMED INTO THE GAME. Even CliffyB himself has admitted that they put an element of randomness into Gears of War online just so that it is more appealing/accessible to n00bs. Well, it worked - Gears has been THE top Live game since November and probably will stay there until Halo 3 is released in September. He said that several moments in the game basically break-down to a "roll of the dice" (his words) in determining who gets the kill. This type of moment should never be in any competitive game. You should always know/expect what is going to happen in certain situations. In Gears, you don't.
The bottom line is that Gears is a hella-fun game (check my gamertag - its all I play out of the 18 games I own), but it should NOT be taken as seriously as it is. I get so sick of listening to the host's team-stacked-team talk trash after each and every round. Heck, in a lot of cases, I KNOW I've gone up against the "double host" - where two guys are tied together over a LAN or router and playing online. No lag for either of them. Wow.
Every round of Gears of War should have this disclaimer before the match starts : "Gears of War is a buggy, random, and laggy game and should not be taken seriously. Have fun, but do not gloat/pout at the end of each round, for the game has too many faults in it for you to do so. Thank you. Epic Games."

Your whole post was great, it's just this is the part I relate to the most. I can be very sneaky in Gears given the right situation. And this is the part of the game that pisses me off the most. I sneak up behind some guy who's busy firing atmy team mate, I shoot him in the back of the neck: Nothing.
I really wish they would take out the randomness of the game. It's a fun game, I'm not gonna lie, but the randomness makes it (for the lack of a better word) too random.

Stop right there. Gears is not an FPS and really shouldn't be compared to them when regarding "skill."

Thanks for the feedback - Gears has been my passion/obsession since November and I don't see it waning any time soon. That being said, I have severely reduced my seriousness/intensity when playing this game. There are just TOOO many WTF? moments for anyone to think they are better than another.
Case in point - I can play one 10 round match (off host) where I get 20 kills, leading everyone (even the host). The next 10 round match (off host), I can't seem to kill anything and get only 2 kills for the entire match. Huh? The "skill" of the people I was playing against wasn't that different - so what happened? It could be attributed to the skill of my team, as a whole, the maps, the weapons I use on those maps, etc. - but I've played far too much Gears to know that this discrepancy comes down to the game itself. Is it going to stop me from playing? No. Could Gears be better? Yes. Is Epic going to change these core gameplay things to make Gears better. Probably not, given what they've said and done over the past 7 months.
Mark Rein has flat-out said that the hit-detection is not going to be changed in the game - thus, we are stuck with the lag and the host advantage. That's fine, but I'd be happy if Epic did SOMETHING to compensate/tone-down the host's weapons to help balance out the teams. My suggestions:
- tone down the host's damage by 25% for every weapon. Instead of 12 Lancer bullets - its now 15, and so forth.
- alternate the host duties between teams after each round.
- hide the host until the game starts (like done with Halo 2). It would still be there, but at least it is random.
[QUOTE="Aljosa23"]You suck in Gears don't you?samusarmada
3/2 odds that that's true.
5/4 people struggle with fractions also.Thankyou, someone else says it but of course, you've already felt the wrath. I consider gears a borderline-casual game. Btw, I do have a 360 and have played this overrated trash.
Hosting a game sucks, I can kick a host's ass. When you host a game and get shot it shakes the camera so much compared to when you're not hosting and some much blood goes on the screen. Disturbed_One98
The fact that Epic programmed the game such that ONLY the host's screen gets filled with blood as he gets shot absolutely shows that they know there is a host advantage and the blood is their "answer" to it. If they can fill the host's screen with blood, can't they do something more significant/fair? Why not lessen the damage done by the host's weapons? This should balance the lag-free gameplay that they get to experience (as well as the ability to pull of headshots using the shotgun from 30 feet away...)
Oh, and to all the replies that say "play Gears on a LAN if you want to experience the game the way it is meant to be played." hey, I'd love to. Problem is: I am on a DSL connection and that is how I play over Live. Why is it that other games can deal with playing over a broadband connection with zero advantage to the host, yet Gears - the premier 360 title - can't???

Based on this comment you say that Pokemon takes no skill to play. Yet it has the most dedicated competetive userbase (besides Halo, I respect that) on the face on the planet. You have your simple killing via headshots from the sniper, regular torqueing, chainsawing, pistol whipping to more advance technique, like floor torque downing/killing, blind sniping/torqueing, reversed chainsawing, shotgun dancing, blindingfiring killing, boom herding, quick sniper smack, upcloseground-torquedowning (my favorite)and so force. Hell, you can do so much different tactics to win. I like to think I am very creative with my weapons (especially lil ol' Torque-ee).

active reload is just there for fun, reloading in other games is just as fast
anyways, if you allow people to get close enough to you to granade tag or chainsaw you, then you are the noob
