1.Contra for the SNES: Better graphics Better sound Contra for the Megadrive: More characters More Moves More Weapons More level variety Different Paths Different Endings Castlevania 4 was a major letdown, it was a step backwards from castlevania 3 in every way, you only played as one character and had no special moves. The megadrive version had two characters, more weapons, every weapon had a normal atack and a special attack and levels had different paths

2.Sonic 3D?

3.The megadrive had a more powerfull processor, (ya ya blast processing i'm not even gonna go there) the end result was that it's shoot' em ups were a lot more fast paced, i mean compare MUSHA (AKA ALESTE) for the genesis vs. Space mega force (AKA ALESTE) for the SNES Compare the gameplay speed of Super R-type or R-type 3 vs. Thunderforce 3 and 4 st1ka

1. I still stand by my claim regarding Contra 3 even though I think it's a no contest since they are so different. And even though you might consider Castlevania 4 to be inferior to the third one, many other, myself included consider it one of the best in the series and with a soundtrack that is matched only by SotN. You compare different games, it would be like comparing TMNT: Hyperstone Heist to Turtles in Time. With the latter so superior it's not worth discussing. And you seem to forget games such as the Street Fighter installments and the lack of Mega Man, Act Raiser, Final Fantasy 3, Chrono trigger, Secret Of etc.

2.Sonic 3D? I'm sorry, not only is it a bad game it doesn't it even come close to Donkey Kong Country 2, Yoshi Island, Killer Instinct and Super Metroid in terms of graphics.

3. Shoot em ups. The only genre i'm willing to say that Genesis was superior in.It's no secret the raw power of Snes is beyond what the Genesis provided, due to it being released later.

Don't counter with some random 1-2 games such as Gunstar Heroes or Shining Force. I have played them, and I don't want to list all the Snes gems again. It's far too many, and I'm playing Battletoads at the moment.

1- Actually sound wise even the megadriver version of castlevania was better, it had the same composer as SOTN composer and it shows graphics wise the SNES wins, but that's the only thing it wins. when it comes to castlevania like i said more variety, more weapons different characters and non -linear paths, the same goes for Contra (except that in contra the SNES also wins in the sound dept.). Hyperston heist and turtles in time were really the same game, the SNES had the better version due to sound and graphics. Street fighter was better on the SNES due to it's graphics, yes. As for the "lack of installments" what's your point? i could just as well say you seem to forget the lack of installments on the SNES when it comes to thunder force, Crusader of Centry, Musha or Treasure games.

2- Yoshi's island used an expansion chip, i have no problem admiting that super metroid can't be done on the Genesis the game that comes the closest is Phantom 2040, as for Killer instinct and Donkey Kong Contry they both used pre-rendered graphics, the same type of graphics that Sonic 3D used it doesn't matter if the game sucks, graphically the SNES edges out due to it being able do display more on-screen colours, but that's it, it's "3D" could just as well be done on the megadrive

3-Shoot´em up, Racing, Sports games, beat' em ups, strategy games, they all ran batter on the megadrive. And games like contra and castlevania were better gameplay wise.

I remember working all summer one year so I could pay $200 for a Genesis. Even then I couldn't afford another game so I played Altered Beast for weeks until I got another game. I eventually got a SNES too but the Sega always had my attention and a special place in my gaming library. Too bad they ruined it with stupid peripherals like the Sega CD. I actaully paid $300 for that thing and it did nothing for gaming. Nice experiment but Sony finally got CD gaming right with the PS1. Ah memories.....

I think it's safe to say that you are not providing any facts, you only state that it's in your opinion that you find Castlevania better on the GEN which I wont argue, but just because you find different paths and more weapons to be equal to a better game doesn't mean that I agree. You seem to think that the Snes and Genesis installments are all identical except for some graphics and sound here and there. In Hyperstone Heist and Turtles in Time there are quite a few more things than just graphics and sound that sets them apart. And no Sonic 3D still doesn't come close, and it's not even the best looking game on the system. It wasn't even real 3D it was 2D/3D. And Terranigma more than proves that no matter what category the Snes had a better sounding and looking game, and more often than not. More polished. One of the VERY few exceptions I make is Shadowrun which is a bit better on the Genesis, even though I prefer the Snes versoin in terms of story etc. Racing games? Beat Em Ups? And why is it that everytime people that argue that Gen is superior to the Snes they always brings up Tresure as some kind of holy grail? They made some great games, sure. Niché but great. Anyway I suggest you look up a top list of the best Snes games. I've had this argument with Panzer Zwei more than enough.

It's true. The Genesis had the more comfortable controller, and it catered to MK/SF2 more. Also, the Multi-Plats like Aladdin, Jurrasic Park, Shaqfu (don't diss)and it's exclusives were all better like Xmen 1 & 2, Streets of Rage, Sonic, Kid Chameleon, Comix Zone, Vectorman, Castlevania Bloodlines, Toejam and Earl, Moonwalker.

Anyway, best console ever next to N64.

thoughts?

speakhard

The Genesis was a great console, but it definitely had its limitations. Particularly regarding color and sound. The hollow sounding effects of the Genesis kind of got on my nerves, and the flat color palette gave some of the games a very stale look when compared to some TurboGrafx-16 and SNES games. Oh, and Moonwalker? You should have mentioned Strider instead. THE FIRST 8-MEG GAME EVER!!!

Oh?and SAying Super castlevania 4 has the best soundtrack right after SOTN is a fact? at least i'm stating something gameplay wise that castlevania bloodlines and contra: hardcorps have over their SNES counterparts, all you can say is "But they have shiny graphics" if you value graphics over gameplay be my guest, but seeing as how the megadrive versions have more moves, more characters, more weapons, more level variety, different paths and on contra different endings don't start telling me that this doesn't affect gameplay. As for TMNT, other then throwing your enemies agains the screen i don't seen anything the SNES did that the megadrive could not

And no Sonic 3D still doesn't come close, and it's not even the best looking game on the system. It wasn't even real 3D it was 2D/3D.Gamingcucumber
Right, because KI and donkey kong country were in 3D

And Terranigma more than proves that no matter what category the Snes had a better sounding and looking game,Gamingcucumber

and as i said before the SNES has the best graphics and the best sound, i'm not questioning that, i'm simply saying that castlevania bloodlines hada better sountrack then Super castlevania

and more often than not. More polished. One of the VERY few exceptions I make is Shadowrun which is a bit better on the Genesis, even though I prefer the Snes versoin in terms of story etc. Gamingcucumber
More polished? Better graphics and better sound due to superior hardware? sure, more polished?i'm gonna have to ask for a linj there

Gamingcucumber

so in other words you're completly ignoring my argument? IS that what you do when you can't find a decent comeback? i like it how you completly ignored the racing and beat em ups part

Then go as far as to say treasure games are niche, but then you start listing games like terranigma

why don'y you follow your own advice and go look upa top list of best genesis games?Oh and by the way Gunstar heroes was the best selling megadrive game in Japan, and it was created by treasure, some niche game

Oh for sure...a game like Shaqfu is what made the Genesis...

But uhh one game comes to mind about the SNES:

Super Mario World.

dotWithShoes

That one name, Super Mario World, instantly makes SNES >>>>>>> Genesis.

that is so true super mario world is the best mario game ever and quite possibly the greatest game ever

I clearly stated that Castlevania IV is often regarded as having the second best soundtrack in the franchise. The bosses were more interesting, the level design were tight, the challange were great, the sound were awesome. And guess what? Super Castlevania was released 3 years BEFORE Bloodlines. Same goes for Contra 3 which was also released way before Hard Corps. And yet they match. And it's obvious you haven't played Turtles in Time so why argue? Heyperstone Heist is missing roughly half of the missions found in the Snes version, the Rat King etc wasn't even in the game and it didn't feature the Mode 7 gameplay.

Please, provide me the quote where I state that Donkey Kong Country 2 was in 3D. Or any Snes game. I have yet to mention StarFox. Ignoring your arguments? Your so called arguments are laughable and you state them with no reason what so ever.

Better beat em ups? Well, Final Fight, Sonic Blastman, Ninja Warriors, Turtles In Time, Battletoads Double Dragon, Super Double Dragon, Brawl Brothers, Rival Turf, Batman Returns, Maximum Carnage.

Better Racing games? Rock And Roll Racing, Mario Kart, F-Zero, Stunt Racer FX, Unicracers etc. even though you can't really claim that neither console excelled in this category.

Uh, yeah I mentioned Terranigma in a sense that it looks superb not that it was popular. Stop trying to put words in my mouth. Compared to Shining Force it looks like a game from the next gen. Treasure are probably the best Shoot Em Up developer there have ever been, but since we early on established that the genesis was better in terms of those games I don't see it as anything worth mentioning. Also Shoot Em Ups has always been niché, not matter what game we are talking about. Stop quoting me if you don't have anything interesting to say since yours are so annoying to edit.

I never had an SNES, just a Genesis. I only played the very first Mario but I have to say Sonic is the game that got me into gaming. I played Super Mario World recently and while I enjoyed it, it just doesn't give me the same feeling as when I play Sonic.

The genesis controller wasn't nearly as good as the super nintendo's. 3 butons wan't enough to play a game like Mortal Kombat or street Fighter properly.

You're completely wrong. All of those exclusives pale in comparison Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy (series) Secret of Mana (series) Star Ocean Super Mario World (series) Donkey Kong Country (series) Dragon Warrior (series) Castlesvania IV (Super Castlevania) Castlevania Dracula X >>>>>Bloodlines Super Metroid LoZ: A link to the Past Mario RPG Super Contra IV Secret of Evermore Mario Kart Like I said, none of those exclusives come anywhere close to the greatness of any games I've listed above. Genesis got owned.

Sonic 3D?
I think it's vague to make some random claim that Genesis is better than the Snes gameplay wise. That's like saying that the PS3 has better gameplay than the 360. It doesn't make any logical sense in any sense of the word.Gamingcucumber
The megadrive had a more powerfull processor, (ya ya blast processing i'm not even gonna go there) the end result was that it's shoot' em ups were a lot more fast paced, i mean compare MUSHA (AKA ALESTE) for the genesis vs. Space mega force (AKA ALESTE) for the SNES Compare the gameplay speed of Super R-type or R-type 3 vs. Thunderforce 3 and 4

The Genesis did have a faster processor but that is the only advantage it is over the SNES. The SNES had a much better GPU, Mode-7 and a vastly superior sound capibilities. Go on youtube and type in 'Donkey Kong Country - Aquatic Ambience'. The Genesis simply wasn't capable of sound quality like that.

AHEM. UN Squadron Act Raiser (series) F-Zero Pilot Wings ...and don't forget them again. thanks.

SNES and Genesis are both right up there with ps1 as my fav consoles ever.

Genesis had greats like General Chaos, NHL series with blood, Xmen series, etc...

SNES had Super Mario world, Earthbound and lots of others.

kozzy1234

I completly agree with you! Snes, genesis and PS1 were the best systems ever imo!!!

Anyway im starting to feel this same love for the 360! lol 8)

Heh, me too. The SNES may have had RPGs out the wahzoo, but everything else was much better on the MegaDrive.

They were both damn good consoles but I giv the edge to SNES. In terms of platformers Yoshi's Island>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Mario World>>>>>>Sonic 2 & 3. Honestly, I think I'll call them equals because I can't slight 2 amazing consoles.

The Genesis did have a faster processor but that is the only advantage it is over the SNES. The SNES had a much better GPU, Mode-7 and a vastly superior sound capibilities. Go on youtube and type in 'Donkey Kong Country - Aquatic Ambience'. The Genesis simply wasn't capable of sound quality like that.manicfoot

it's quite likely that finer detail like underwater effects can not be done on the megadrive, but the graphics in general (3D pre-rendered graphics and backgrounds) can be done on the megadrive, heck even the game gear had a game that used the same type of technology found in Donkey kong country

BTW, Phantasy Star IV on Genesis was awesome. 8)

I love them both almost equally, but I give an edge to the SNES because it had way better graphics and sound. Genesis had an excellent library too though, and nowadays it's a lot cheaper to pick up games for it.

How in the world was SF2 better on Genesis? It was superior in every way on SNES.

Anyone who knows anything about games knows the SNES was the superior console.

Also, anyone who actually thinks the Genesis controller was better than the SNES pad is looking through rose tinted glasses or really didn't actually take the time to compare both the controllers properly in real life.

The SNES controller was vastly superior to the Genesis controller, and even the later release of the 6 button pad for Genesis didn't change that. The only thing that was really useful for was having all 6 buttons on the front of the pad for a game like Street Fighter II for example, but let's be honest here, even with that the SNES pad was still superior, even for Street Fighter II.

Let's not even go into the power of the hardware, the quality of the games, the 3rd party support, the overall sales or whatever else shall we.

Nop, Genesis < Snes would be the correct thread name.

For me i just have to say, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, etc, Genesis just doesnt had much to go against SNES awesome library, although i really like Vector Man and Shinobi III

Oh for sure...a game like Shaqfu is what made the Genesis...

But uhh one game comes to mind about the SNES:

Super Mario World.

dotWithShoes

That one name, Super Mario World, instantly makes SNES >>>>>>> Genesis.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Super Mario World. IMO of course.

I liked the Genesis better than the SNES, but the SNES did have more JRPG's. But Sonic pwned the 16 bit era.. and just reminded me of the sadness that has fallen upon him now.

Unless you were into the EA sports games I really don't see how you can think that but then it is all subjective. I personally think the SNES has superior games in pretty much every single genre, if you ignore sports, but each to their own.

SHMUPS and beat' em ups sega had the clear advantag, i also like the megadrive's action platformers better as well as shooting games (á lá contra and Ranger X)

Yeah, the Genesis was the console for those types of games. I love platformers but hate action platformer. They always felt so watered down compared to pure classic platforming for me personally. Also I can't help but say that Mario owned sonic as far as platformers went and that was big for me.
