... i'm not anymore.. anyone remember those games that were just beautiful, even if the graphics were not top notch, and you could just get lost in them?

for me it's the older final fantasies... before things got so linear...

anyone else not gettin that sense of.... EPIC!... in games anymore? i mean epic scenery mostly.. i played final fantasy xi for close to 5 years and towards the end all i wanted to do was just go afk in a beautiful spot so i could see it when i got home from work....

remember scenery in games like this?

or even more epic than that stuff....

i'm calling for system wars to UNITE! and post the most EPIC of epic sceneries... i dont care if its on the PSWii60 or PC, or anything that's ever been considered a gaming system..

(on a side note.. whats a good PC game that i can get lost in some beautiful scenery? preferably not a MMO that's gona cost monthly fee lol)

Find me a picture of the first time you see Rapture underwater in BioShock 2, and thats my contribution. Just seeing the whole city in that vast ocean, it made Rapture look small by comparison. I actually felt a little vertigo staring into the expanse of the ocean.

Samara from Mass Effect 2:

There is just something...paralyzing in her eyes that no single landscape could ever capture. Definitely one of my favourite characters

Kind of. Thats not the view in particular. Its when you're up on a cliff while underwater. You can actually look out into the ocean. Its kind of overwhelming, to me

where in the game was this? begining middle or end, cause i don't remember a cliff.. i remember like being in an office and lookin out the windows.. and to -GreenGoblin- .. yea dante's inferno had some epic scenery, i just beat it yesterday, however some of... well.. most of the sprites in the game threw me off and took me outa the moment, wish they polished that up some more.

Assassin's Creed and Heavenly Sword are the last games I remember getting lost in. I also kinda got lost in Demon's Souls, but to a much lesser extent. GOW III will bring that feeling back seven-fold.

I think he means the part where you go underwater for the 1st time (I think it's the 1st time)... you can look down a cliff and you see Rapture in the whole. I also think that was a nice scene.

As for DI, well yeah... the game could've been a bit more epic in the scenery but it has great views regardless of that lil issue...IMO

Yes, in Assassin's Creed II. I spent like the first hour to 2 hours playing as Ezio just running around, pissing the people off and climbing buildings and just exploring.

That part in Resistance 2 where you first emerge from the underwater base and see that the whole city is being invaded by Chimera was pretty epic. I don't have any screens of it but someone else can post them if they feel like it.

I remember marveling at the original PD, to see it look like this is amazing.

Guild Wars still looks great I don't play it anymore but I log in every now and again to just look around the world.

guess i never played enough games that had epic beauty.. cause all i see are jaggies XD the thing about looking at epic scenes in retrospect is you need some really tight nostalgia goggles... but i was never a person to play games that could set me up for epic scenes and i rarely get far into the game before it bores me, so i guess its my loss. however, what i find epic is not necessarily the big picture, but the small picture. Stuff like mass effect's wonderful detail in each npc or the big battles in total wars series or, world in conflict's always changing scenery due to bombardment.

Nope. Visually be it technical(given) or artistic. We've only gotten better. I loved the look of way too many games to count. The Last Guardian is proof enough that we got another real looker on the way again :)

coasterride509

Agreed. I think i spent just as much time looking around at the scenery than i did shooting people when i played through it. I had a friend come over and play, and all he did was rush through the game. I got very frusturated because he wouldnt stop and enjoy the artwork.

hmmm.GOW 3 is more about scale than actual beauty. But it is good. But not amazing. Certainly not seven-fold. Bu thats just my opinion.

Brutal Legend, Gears of War 2, Bioshock 1 and 2, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect 1 and 2, hell even Banjo Kazooie N&B had some great scenic views that were very detailed and made me pause to have a look. I think many games still have that power, but it's just not as common, now that i'm used to HD graphics, I expect them, and hi res textures and well layed out landscapes arent in every frame of every game, so its rare, but still around.

I love how the TC talks about a time "before linearity" and then his first picture is of FF7 in a section that literally is SUPER linear. FF7 had a nice coat of paint to hide it, but think back. . .you'll realize that FF7 was linear up for a large portion of the first disc. Then entire Midgar sequence was one linear path. Once you make it to the overworld the linearity doesn't stop. I can't remember exactly the point where they open the world up to you, but I'm pretty sure I can remember a direction line all the way to Cosmos Canyon.
