I missed the good ole days when Tim Sweeney made the following claims.

"Unreal Engine 5 is really a generational leap or more in technological capabilities. The hardware that Sony is absolutely phenomenal. Not only an unprecedented amount of graphics power but also a completely new storage architecture that blows most past architectures out of the water and is far ahead of even the state-of-the-art highest-end PCs you can buy,"

He didn't leave it at that, he dug deeper.

"Sony is pioneering here with the PlayStation 5 architecture. It's got a God-tier storage system which is pretty far ahead of PCs, bon a high-end PC with an SSD and especially with NVMe, you get awesome performance too."

And folks bit that shit, hook line and sinker. 🤭

And folks for both consoles bit 4K and ray tracing hook, line, and sinker. And we still have morons buying the most uncomfortable office chairs ever made because of flashy colors and "gaming" written on the box. Or the worst sounding headsets both for audio out, and audio in because it has RGB.

Pedro wanted to play The Medium on a harder difficulty. He wrote the devs and they told him just shut his eyes while playing.

It's pretty outstanding for the few games that utilize it and I expect it to only get better from here.

What does Bug spray have to do with how advanced the PS5 hard drive is?

After all this time, i still cannot believe people were hyping a STORAGE DEVICE. It was just desperation to hype something, and since nothing was impressive, people settled on the ssd 😆

That statement was proven wrong even before he put it out by John Carmack when he talked about using non-buffered IO. Nevertheless, that statement was simply disingenuous when he knew what Nvidia had in store with RTX IO even if you wanted to hide behind the 'ease of use' excuse.

It's Timcent.

Like anything he really says is worth a damn.

I get my info from my eyes and ears (talking 'bout real world benchmarks, y'all), not some corporate windbag.

This new generation is a disaster. I don't care what anyone says and the sales mean nothing to me.

Without 4k, 60fps as standard across all games including with raytracing, etc., then this generation is not even worth the upgrade.

The history of gaming has been clear, new consoles/tech mean that the advancements should be easily noticeable (8 bit to 16, 16 to polygons, more polygons, introduction of online as a standard with HD, noticeably better HD and technical points..) now what? A game from last gen with a few more frames and 1080p to 4k?

The companies had no choice but to hype the storage... there was nothing else to hype.

I'll upgrade (as I always do) when the games that I want to play are released.

Cross-gen is a stupid concept.

What you are asking is not sustainable. New generations of consoles cannot offer the same performance leaps as the past generations.

Sony purchased a nearly $300 million dollar stake in Epic Games right around the time Tim Sweeney was making these comments.

Im sure thats completely unrelated to him repeating Sony's nonsensical propaganda verbatim, and giving Sony exclusive marketing rights to demonstrate Unreal Engine 5 on PS5, and he was actually doing it because Tim Sweeney just lurves PlayStation that much.

These people are salesmen, not developers. And if they praise each other, more often than not they are in cahoots.

I completely agree. Eventually the upgrades will be minor.

But right now, IMO, the leap into the next gen was clear from a technical standpoint as to what it had to deliver on. As it stands right now, it has not.

So all these specs were hyped and yet, practically, it's a mid-generation upgrade.... at best.

All I know is:

  1. PS4 was agonizing to use because it was just a piece of trash computer - even in 2014. It was slow in every way, and it was loud.
  2. PS5 is snappy, runs games acceptably, and has fast storage so downloads are fast and load times are short.

Sure there are barely any new games and all the shit Sony had been preaching is largely marketing nonsense, but damn it feels good to get away from the PS4.

This is correct. The media and fans hype consoles specs to ungodly levels every new console cycle.

Hey at least we got an SSD and a decent CPU.

At this point everything will seem like a 'mid-gen upgrade' because everything is just a normal computer. Going from spinning rust to SSD is the last major hardware improvement we will see until consoles either disappear or go through a fundamental change. From here on out it's just GPU upgrades.

The PS4 is brutally loud initially until eventually it stops. Drives me nuts.

I agree, and my summed up thoughts on your points:

1. The quality of life improvements of the PS5 are welcome.

2. SSD is a big deal.

3. Games will eventually come. Launching in the middle of the pandemic may have worked out selling consoles, but game development was greatly affected.

Problem is this, the technical "leap" that we should have got did not happen. The leap would not have been as drastic as previous generations, but 4k/60fps locked/RT as standard was not a tall order. Performance mode vs. Fidelity, is stupid and a way of covering up the shortfall of the console (both of them for that matter.)

At the end of the day, they'll have my money because I want Halo and God of War amongst other games. But this probably the first generation where I was like, that's it? And perhaps, that's how it is going to be going forward.

@Pedro:

If it was mostly marketing bullshit ( which I agree that it mostly was lol), why in the hell did LinusTechTips make that stupid apology video to Mr. Tencent Sweeny? 🤔

Fanboys sure do eat up marketing. I remember back when PS3 was announced, Epic claimed how much they loved working with teh Cell at the reveal. Good times 😂
