Before everyone starts 'flaming' or saying 'not another one of these topics,' please hear me out.

-I am on a tight budget, and can only buy one system, and one system only for a very long time (if not indefinitely).

-Tight budget, so price of hardware and games plays a big factor.

-My choices are Wii or PS3, I am not interested in 360 at all.

-I have an HDTV, and would like to have a blue-ray player.

-I love RPGs, but have become accustomed to casual play as well.

-I consider myself a Final Fantasy fanboy.

-I like Mario, but not particularly interested.

-Not too interested in FPS, nor "party games."

-I would like to get my wife into gaming as well, and think that the Wii may be a great possibility.

I know different consoles are more 'fit' for certain players than others. So, based upon my situation and preferences, which would you guys pick if you were under my situation.  I have no experience with these consoles other than playing Wii sports for 5 minutes, and thoroughly enjoying it (even for that 5 mintues).  Thank you for hearing me out.

Get a PlayStation 3, its has better graphics and isn't flooded with kiddie games. Oh yeah, there's also a built-in blu ray player, which is a high definition media player for your favorite movies all is pure HD. The Wii can't play bluray and it will be embarrassing to show your friends that you're playing with a system that contains mario and friends.

This should answer your question. I have both and quite frankly, once I had played the only good 10 games that Wii has to offer, it just sits there, collecting dust, not even being able to be used as a DVD or CD player, whilst me and the wife play great games on the PS3 in HD, watch blu-ray movies and upscaled DVD movies on the PS3, stream audio and video content from our PC in the other room on the PS3, etc. Need I say more?

Maybe he had it and got the RROD or as he said before he hasn't got a lot of cash so he doesn't want a console where you have to pay an online subscription.

Plus it seems I can always find cheaper PS3 games.

I looked at some of 360's exclusives, and have no interest in them at all, i.e. Halo series,  Gears, and other games that are similar to these.  Mind you, I did not go into heavy research, but I seem to lean towards Wii and PS3 games more than 360.

I'd get a ps3 if you've been playing games for a long time. I have and I shallow as it may be, I can't get to grips with the the last gen tech of the wii.

ps3:

Longevity (from a tech perspective, more than the wii anyway)

bluray

HDTV

Final Fantasy 13

Wii:

Cheap

Your wife will like it better than the ps3 if she's not a gamer (Although if she isn't, chances are she never will be. That is the case with my gf)

has more jrpg's than the ps3 as of now (coming from another fan of that genre it still did not sway me)

Honestly, I'd get a 360 on a tight budget but I had enough cash to go with the ps3 when I got mine and while I haddoubts for a while, it's starting to kick off nicely now. A wii is basically a gamecube with a fancy controller.

Well I suggest you do as much research as possible. Nobody on here can tell you what you like better than you. Just look at the games and the features of both systems and base your decision on that. If I were you I wouldnt base your decision on the Blu-ray player though. Since the prices of normal Blu-ray players are dropping so fast, you can buy a Wii + a Blu-ray player for less than 400 dollars.

since you said you're on a tight budget then probably the price tag for PS3 might put you off... overall i think i'd choose the PS3 though for the following reasons.

1) as regards hardware its superior therefore having an HDTV would be a better idea getting an HD console..

2) PS3 has many great exclusives already out + others coming up..

3) Multiplat games seem to look and be overall better on the PS3 compared to Wii

4) PSN is a much better online service and comes also for free..

5) PS3 is a blu-ray player also..

I dont have a Wii but i had the time to play games on this console and its fun (has some great games too), so i suggest you try both and ask friends who have both consoles so you can check a few games, their online service etc... if you can only have 1 console though i would strongly suggest getting the PS3..

I figure that most people on this forum has more experience with these console than myself,  so I just wanted some personal input.  I had no idea blu-ray dropped so much, thanks for that tidbit.

But anywho, I still don't like the 360 mainly for the games and how many of those games may depend on online gaming.

Well my personal opinion is that the Wii is the better console. Games like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii Sports (yes, Wii Sports) have kept me satisfied for a longer amount of time than any game on my 360 or PC this generation (apart from Pro Evo perhaps). Some new control schemes for the Wii have also made traditional console controls seem outdated. Plus Im not big on graphics, so I dont really mind playing games that arent as pretty as games on other consoles.

-I have an HDTV, and would like to have a blue-ray player. PS3 is the best blue ray player on the market

-I love RPGs, but have become accustomed to casual play as well. PS3 does have some RPG. Fallout 3, Eternal sonata,Valkyria chornicals,Disaga 3. There are others coming down the line such as White knight story which looks pretty dang good.

-I consider myself a Final Fantasy fanboy. Well FF13 and 13vs is coming for PS3

-I like Mario, but not particularly interested.

-Not too interested in FPS, nor "party games." Well while there are FPS on PS3 there are other genras on PS3 also

-I would like to get my wife into gaming as well, and think that the Wii may be a great possibility. Well thre Buzz quiz for PS3,singstar,rockband,Guitar hero and there are some games on PSN that she might enjoy and hey even you might enjoy.

Hope that helped somehow. PS3 does have a good libary that isint all FPS's. If I was you check over the games and see if you can make a good libary. Also free online does help if you have some money problems. Trust me on that.

A Wii probably appeals more to casual gamers but other than that, the PS3 has better graphics as well as a built-in Blu-Ray player... In any case, neither is a waste of money imo.

Quite frankly, you wont be happy with either choice. The ps3 is a hardcore gaming device will all the tech features you are looking for, but it does not offer much for your wife. The Wii is of course perfect for your wife, but you will be pulling your hair out in short order from all the lame games. You need both, unfortunately. Good luck.

In my all honest opinion I would say go with a PS3 and Here is why,

For $400 you can get a PS3 that is a great multimedia gaming console. You can play Blu Rays, upscale DVDs, can store music from a CD or IPod, you can load up family pictures and the PS3 can also be contributed to the help in cancer research. There is also more but by going off you preferences they are not needed.

For $250 you can get a Wii that only plays games and if you wanted to ever watch Blu Ray movies than you would need to spend at least $150 on a Blu Ray player. So you would still spend around $400 to get the full experience that you listed. Why not just get the PS3.

I can relate with you wanting to get your wife into gaming since my intentions of buying a Wii was so I could get my fiance into console gaming since she was more into the handheld. Since are women taste may vary I will just list games on the PS3 that my girl got into. She loved the free Sudoku game on the PSN, Warhawk, Uncharted, LBP, GEON, Super Star Dust (PSN), Resistance and Wipeout HD tho she complains that it moves to fast for her. It took time but she loves Blu Ray and adores the fact that you can hook up a digital camera via USB and play a sideshow on the TV. Which is a nice feature when you are having a small get together.

The Wii will be good for family gaming but IMO you can get the same experience and more with the PS3.

in my opinion both are not worth it....Xbox 360 is the best because

1)It is the cheapest

2)It has the most amazing and innovative games

3)It has the best games

4)It has the best online service

5)It has the best hardware

I disagree. The Wii has a good selection of "hardcore" games. And at the same time the PS3 has a couple of fun "non-gamer" games.

Wii

although the whole board will tell you the Wii sucks

Reason : Looking at the marketshare the Wii has already won.. The consequence is simple.. Thirdparty support will shift towards the wii.. (unless the thirdparties are not interested in making money)

The PS3 barely sold 3 million in Japan and is a failure in Europe and America as well. It will get 360 multiplats and very very few exclusives if any..

The situation right now looks like the PS3 gets more third party support but you have to take in account that the thirdparties assumed that the PS3 will set the world on fire and outsell the wii 10 to 1.. which did not happen

I'll say this: I think you should get a 360. It has more games and has plenty of RPGs (although they may not be so hot). But, if you were going to get one of the systems you listed, then make it a PS3. I own all the systems and I barely ever play my Wii, there's just not enough software.

This is such a terrible argument. Since when are people forced to buy bad games for a console? If you think a game is bad, dont buy it. It's that simple.

Okay. But I haven't bought anything new on my Wii since Brawl. All I've been seeing is Hannah Montana and Ninja Bread Man 2.

Can we then conclude that the Wii might not be the console for you? Or perhaps not at this time. I personally have a list of Wii games I still have to buy/play. Also, there is no Ninjabread Man 2.

I recommend the PS3 over the Wii. The PSN games are better than most LIVE arcade or Wii Ware titles, there are a handful of noteworthy exclusive games, and the Blu Ray player is a welcome addition to any HDTV household.

Still, I would rethink your kneejerk reaction against the 360. I have all 3 and, especially now that you can stream Netflix, use the 360 significantly more than the other 2 combined. It's not only the better system from a pure gaming perspective, (multiplatform titles look better, and Microsoft holds their developers to higher standards than Sony) the 360 has a lot more to offer than just Halo and Gears. But to each his own... some people just hate the 360.

He must be a fool to not get one ! Paying for online service ? lol thats a fanboy statement.I prefer to call it "MS doing a favour,to give you the BEST online service in the WORLD".... And about the poor hardware and RROD... You better know that in nearly 90% of the RROD its caused by the owner himself,by placing it in the wrong place at the wrong time,if you treat it well theres no chance of RROD.Its only a PS3 fanboy dream myth busted ....

Trust me, get the PS3. I've had the wii a little over a year now, and i've played pretty much all it has to offer. You'll be kicking yourself if you get the wii, because there arent enough quality titles to hold it down. Sure it has some nice games, but once you beat those, it has no use. In addition to that, IT IS THE QUEEN OF SHOVELWARE. I know a lot of people are saying "If you dont like shovelware, dont buy it" but its frustrating that most of the wii's library consists of shovelware. I just got a PS3 and i definitely know what i've been missing out on. I'm a person who believes that gameplay>graphics, but come on, people need to stop treating the wii like it has the best gameplay in the universe. Sure i thought the motion controls were innovative at first, but now its a gimmick to me. In the end, you have to ask yourself, Metal Gear Solid 4, or Cooking Mama?

Based on your criteria, the PS3 would be the better choice.

I have both and definetly PS3. Once you get a PS3 it's very hard to even turn the Wii on. PS3 is a better system in every way. More games, superior online, more functions, better graphics, sound, etc.. Everything on PS3 is higher quality

edit: About your wife, if she's not into gaming now I don't think the Wii will do it for her. I bought the Wii thinking my wife would like it as well and she hates the motion controls. She actually prefers the PS3. Her favorite games are Buzz Quiz and Rockband.

I know you're not really interested in the 360, but keep this in mind. There are more RPGs on it than on the Wii and PS3 combined. Plus Final Fantasy 13 will be on the 360 (at least outside of Japan).

If you're still adamant about not getting it the ultimate question for you is just how tight is money for you? The Wii is $150 cheaper than the PS3 plus you'll pay on average $10 less per new game. Many new games even come in at the $40 mark. If you're buying a lot of games over the year that adds up.

Additionally if you don't forsee yourself buying more than one game a month (12 a year or so) then there's no reason the Wii's library won't suffice. The last couple months were weak for the Wii, but over the life of the system there are plenty of good games that you'd like. On the other hand if you really think you'll be buying up games left and right, then the Wii's library make be a little too thin for you in which case the PS3 may be the better option.

[QUOTE="princeofshapeir"] Okay. But I haven't bought anything new on my Wii since Brawl. All I've been seeing is Hannah Montana and Ninja Bread Man 2.

I sold my Wii because there was nothing I wanted to play on it for the rest of the year apart from a few ok looking indie titles.Even so, the shovelware argument is a stupid one No-one forces you to buy shovelware and you're supposed to know enough about videogames to avoid buying it (being on a videogame forum).

You need to decide, if you want your wife to get into gaming, buy her either a DS or a Wii, PS3 is not really for girls unless you and your wife likes Singstar games. I love blu ray too, but think its a bit too costly to enter my home just yet, I'D probably go for a stand alone player in a few months considering what the blu ray market would be like IN America and Japan. I've tried the ps3 and didnt think it was for me, so i tried the DS and loved it my wife did too and i also bought the Wii which is fun with the family. I'M a casual gamer sometimes and can be hardcore sometimes too coz the Wii and DS does have hardcore titles too and have an interesting lineup for 2009.

Does it really matter if the 360 has a bunch of rpgs if most of them are average at best?  Lost Oddysey was slightly better than average and Vesperia was very good as well as Eternal Sonata, but Sonata you can get on the PS3.  The rest of the 360s rpgs were not veyr good at all.  Fable 2 I dont' consider an rpg either, it's a short action game.

The PS3 has Sonata, which is very good, as well as Disagea which is good and the sleeper strategy rpg of the year Valkyria Chronciles.  They also have FF13 (as does the 360) and FF13 VS which is EXCLUSIVE to the PS3.

The biggest two reasons you buy a 360 are for FPS (the 360s two biggest franchises are Halo and Gears) and Live.  He has stated HE LIKES NEITHER.

The PS3's biggest franchises are Metal Gear, God of War, Uncharted, LBP and Resistance.  Only one of those is an FPS.

I think he'd be happier with the PS3 even IF the 360 was on his list.  PS3 exclusives are simply more up his alley since most 360 exclusives are shooters.

On top of all that his wife would probably ADORE Little Big Planet and get months and months of replayability out of it with user content.

I don't think there is even a debate.  Go with PS3.

You should get a PS3 if the price isnt a concern, if you dont, your HDTV will come kick you in the balls
