Not sure if this is a counted as a homebrew or emulator or anything in gamespots opinion, but I'm trying to program an fps. I know all I need too exept where to download the source enginge(Valves version). If it is in fact public domain. If not, does anybody know any other game engines that are legal and free? I didn't think that the almighty source wasn't copyrighted till I heard about all the mods people make on it, and that other devs use it.

Source is not freeware...your best off making a mod for Half Life 2 or Crysis....

the only freeware engines are much older ones....I think Quake 2 might be.

I don't think that you can just download the Source engine... I think you need some sort of license to get it (at least that's what I read when I was bored and tryed to download it).

Lite-C and the MED 3d Content editor is a good free solution. Can't develop commerical apps though.

Thanks for the help, but I'm just going to goo with the last option. My computer is crap, it can barely handle diablo and starcraft, so I'm pretty sure that Crysis is out of the question.
