I have noticed something over the years. As graphics become better in video games, the characters you play as get uglier and uglier. Look at Marcus Fenix, look at all those characters in various Western action games, and you will notice some pretty damn ugly people. Of course, the reason for all this is because graphics have improved to the point where we can see skin pores in Battlefield 3 on max PC settings. But you know, some developers exaggerate these features too much. Not everybody on Earth has ugly blemish, skin pores, acne, zits/pimples, wrinkles, scruffy neckbeards, scars, freckles, rough skin and all that ugly stuff. So why do developers keep adding all these "features" in all our games, to make our characters look hideous? Why can't I play as a handsome character? Why are female characters the only ones who are beatuiful, while male characters look like cavemen who haven't bathed in 5 years?

When I played Skyrim, I decided to play as a Khaajit instead of the human-like races. It was funny to play the game, comparing my beautiful tiger face to all of the ugly human characters I meet in my travels. Tiger beauty >>> human beauty :P

So, what do you guys think? Do you prefer playing a handsome character? Or do you prefer to bypass humans altogether and play other races like tiger-men, lizard-men, wolf-men and all that? :)

No one really looks at faces in any games. Normally my recticle blocks his face and is pumped with bullets afterwards. There's also nothing to see when- FUS RO DAH.

I think you are comparing the wrong things here. The theme and genre has more to do with it than the level of graphical detail.

No, characters in games just stopped looking like featureless, generic anime/cartoon characters(not including JRPGs). Look outside your basement for once, and you'll see that most people in the world are hideously ugly.

I think all of those factors contribute, including graphics. Action games on PS2 and original Xbox had some average-looking characters, but hardly ugly. Not many characters from last-gen games are anywhere near as ugly as Marcus Fenix.

A bit of variety would be nice. Playing as chiseled hardmen with gruff voices is getting pretty tiresome.

Since when did "featureless" and "generic" have anything to do with skin flaws like blemish, acne, etc? If a female supermodel has no skin flaws, does that mean she is "featureless" and "generic"? Unless expectations are different for females?

Average women aren't super models. Games aren't just like one of your animes where men look like women and every woman looks like a porn star or an underage 8 year old school girl. Western developers aim to create believable characters, not walking breast(or pedophile wank material) and yaoi fangirl bait. The majority of real people are not beautiful and as such to be believable characters, they should not look like super models.

JRPG's are more like real life since all guys have vaginas and all women are twelve years old yet smuggling the Himalayas under their tops.

I don't like my characters to look like barbie and ken dolls. If you wanted that, go play the Sims. I prefer my characters to have some flaws, giving them the "it factor" not just super perfect faces that have no appeal or any interesting aspect or dimension to them. Thanks OP for enlightening me this morning.

Mass Effect lets you look alright/good regardless of gender, just a fairly normal sized human... Though I wish the alien races were playable as the main character, that'd be sweet.

One of the biggest reasons I lack interest in the Gears franchise has been their art style they use for males, I don't want to play as some unrealistically hulking mountain of flesh, it would bug me to no end. That and I don't own a 360 and don't play shooters on consoles in the first place... so it's basically my 3rd biggest reason.. and I generally don't like TPS' 4th biggest reason now...

Average women aren't super models. Games aren't just like one of your animes where men look like women and every woman looks like a porn star or an underage 8 year old school girl. DerpyMcDerp

FF13 doesn't really have undera.... oh wait, yea it does. I was going to correct you on that part, but then I remembered Snow and Sara, how vile.

Anyway, DMC3 doesn't have those issues, and it's certainly Japanese... and there are only like what... 4 people in that whole game? So I think it's acceptable for the only woman to be somewhat 'attractive', plenty of women are.

Dante
Vergil
Lady
Arkham/Jester dude/Slimey goo thing. That's it, right?

With the Western thing though, little bs imo, they may not do the pedophile thing (thank god), but they do hyper masculine constantly, Gears, GoW, Darksiders, and then you have the constant attractive model type women, it's just fanservice, they don't want ugly things (but somehow want Gears men?? I don't get that crap) to look at all day. I think the only place you find more 'average' people is in western RPG's of various types.

Marcus Phoenix is the only truly ugly protagonist I can think of (who is human and not super-stylized). Most of them really do look like supermodels, considering the situations they're in.

Depends on the game, and the developer. Japanese developers for instance keep their characters, particuarly their females, always looking good:

I think it more has to do with the style of the games. Gears of War and God of War have ugly characters because they are more gritty and gory. It would look kind of strange for some pretty boys to rip each other apart.

Anything is better than playing as 14 year old pretty boys wearing tight women's clothing. A.K.A. JRPGs. The honestly if they are going to do that, they should just make the protagonist female.
