The engine noises in the release version of Gran Turismo 6 likely won't see a significant improvement over those in Gran Turismo 5 - though series creator Kazunori Yamauchi hopes to improve them in a post release patch.

Gran Turismo's audio has long been a source of criticism, with its weak engine notes paling in comparison to the more full-throated tune of competitors such as Forza's cars. That situation will most likely remain when Gran Turismo 6 launches in December later this year.

"I think I mentioned this in the past, but we're really working to change the fundamental way that the engine sound works," Yamauchi said in a press event at Polyphony's offices in Tokyo. "Right now I have a feeling that it might not make it for day one for GT6."

There's still hope that improved audio will be patched in at a later date. "There's a good possibility that we might do this," Yamauchi said when pressed on whether it'll be part of the post-release support, and Gran Turismo at least has good form in this regard - Gran Turismo 5 benefited from a series of updates that resulted in a much improved version 2.0.

Data from Gran Turismo 5 won't be recognised by Gran Turismo 6, though, and any progress made in the last game in the series will be lost by those making the jump. "For Gran Turismo 5 to Gran Turismo 6 there'll be no real transfer of data," Yamauchi said. "The main reason for that is the GT5 save data has been cracked already, so we can't really confirm the validity of the save data. So my hope is that between GT6 and GT7 we can transfer some of that across."

Gran Turismo 6 introduces a new physics model that fundamentally changes the handling of the game to good effect, and it's to be supported post-release with regular updates - one of which could introduce day/night cycles to more tracks. On release, only Spa, Nurburgring and Le Mans will support the feature.

"Unfortunately it's not for all the tracks that [a day/night cycle] will be implemented," said Yamauchi. "Obviously we want to include day/night racing for all tracks, but that won't make it for day one. For the day one, all the tracks that are known for 24 hour races, all those tracks will be made available for day/night racing."

Night racing has improved for Gran Turismo 6, though. "The dispersion of light from the headlights has advanced greatly from GT5 to GT6," said Yamauchi. "So night racing should be a lot better in GT6."EuroGamer

It sounds like a lot of the new features are being half assed... again. Are they rushing this one too?

Well correct if I'm wrong car enthuasists, but I'm sure having the same engine sounds is ok as long as it's the same car. It's not like the sound of the engine changed in between games right?

I love GT, but this will be the first one I skip.  Not because of engine sounds, it just seems like a lazy last ditch cash in.

Cant wait for GT7 though.

Thing is, people thought the engine sounds were garbage to begin with.  They never bothered me, but I'm no enthusiast.  I don't even give a shit about cars, I just like the games.

But seeing peoples comments over the years, I'm guessing the sound design is highly inaccurate.

I think the sounds in GT5 weren't that great to begin with.

I just dont get PD at all, they spend all this time making the cars look as realistic as possible and the same with the ingame lighting so everything looks as realistic as they can within the limits of the hardware then they blow the illusion completely with awful sounds from the cars.

Its been 3 generations of consoles with the GT franchise now and here we are STILL with really bad unrealistic sounds, IMO PD need to concentrate on the things that actually matter and not pointless filler like GT5 and nascar, kart, VW van (:?) racing etc etc etc.

Wow incompetence at its worse. How could you be one of Sony's golden egg developers, with a near unlimited budget, and not be able to improve something as simple as the engine sound effects? I mean really, WHAT THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN DOING THIS WHOLE TIME?!! :|

as a car enthusiast,i can safely say that GT5's Engine sounds are downright annoying. Let me put it this way, every time i turn on my Vaccum Cleaner,it reminds me of GT5's Engine sounds.

One of the greatest criticisms of GT5 was the shitty engine sounds compared to the opposition .

So they knew about this,  it was one of their main concerns and now their solution is to just port them from GT5 PS3 to GT6 on PS4

The sad part is people still gobble up the unfinished games because they have been brainwashed into believing GT is the pinnacle of driving simulators. GT6 will still sell millions of copies and the profits will give PD validation that they can continue this bullshit without any consequences.

Because PS3 has a big user base...

But I agree a fully new, next-gen GT would be much more welcome by both, gamers as well as Sony. (as a "system seller" for the PS4)

GT6 is not on PS4 sadly. This will be the first GT game I skip at launch. Why couldn't they make it on PS4 instead? Yea, I know superior install base will be on PS3 but I would have liked a nextgen GT game a whole lot better.

Then at least fully max out your last gen system if you choose to make your new game on it instead of your next generation one. Think of instances like God of War II and Pokemon Black 2/White 2- both cases where the developers opted for the older system over the newer one, but both instances where in doing so, they completely maxxed out the old system. In this instance, they're using low grade sounds from the PS2 era. What the hell?

PS2 had strong last years but at the expense of the PS3.

But I guess the PS3 was bringing too much loss in the first few years so it was actually a good thing they had the PS2 "rolling". ;)

Ya know, everyone (myself included) keeps saying GT6 is on PS3 because of the user base... but hasn't GT traditionally been a good system seller?  Wouldnt it be in Sonys best interest to have a next gen GT as soon as possible?

Yeah, look at how soon MS moved Forza to Xbox One to sell some systems. I mean, props to Sony for supporting their console even after its successor releases, but releasing a flagship game on their old console instead of the new one is doing the game a disservice by holding it back, and also doing the next console a disservice by giving people no incentive to upgrade to it, especially given GT's status as a system mover, and the PS4's total lack of backwards compatibility with PS3.

Having great sound in any racing game is paramount as it's pretty much the only way of really conveying the feeling of power as driver feedback's absent. Excellent sound should be one of their highest priorities. At least Forza realizes the importance of it.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Thing is, GT didn't have much competition back when it was first introduced. So no one really noticed these issues. However, once Forza was released, things changed. I can no longer accept such mediocrity from GT anymore when Forza offers a superior racing experience. It's ridiculous that they can't keep up with Forza. Just copy them. It's not hard.

Man I wish I would've read this before I bought GT6 yesterday. I'm a diehard Forza fan, but I bought a PS3 last year and picked up GT5 to try it out. It was pretty pathetic, from the poor menu system, awkward music and horrible car and collision sounds. GT6 has improved only slightly in menu design and load times, but very little else. Forza not only looks and sounds better but also functions better in every way.
