I AM NOT TRYING TO START A WAR HERE.

This is a genuine question. After all this waiting and speculation and hype etc., etc., is GT5 failing to live up to the hype?

Just had a quick looksie on Metacritic and noticed it was only at an 86. Obviously thats a very respectable score and it looks like a fantastic game, I mean, I'd buy it in aheartbeat had I got a PS3, thats the honest to God truth. But looking around the web and even here on GS, people seem to be dissapointed after this long, grinding wait.

And the incredible hype surrounding it just adds fuel to the fire that its " Flopped ". Would this be fair to say? I know its early days yet and not all the reviews have been released but the MetaCritic score is a fair indication of how this will go. And thus far, its the lowest rated home console Gran Turismo yet(not counting Prolouge).

And I'll say again that I DON'T wanna start anything here, I don't want anybody bitin the head off me cos I'm not trying to stir anything. Genuine Question.

Has the Mecca of PS3 gaming fallen flat on its face?(So far, I'm aware things could change)

And again, please go easy on me GT fans...:P

gran turismo is the definition of bumper cars

sluggish menus, long load times and no interiors

well there is more competition in the racing genre now, and it's just good, nothing amazing like the other games in the series were known to be.

the genre is still terrible imo though.

needs more Dirt games.

Well, its a shame really cos I really thought this was gonna be a no-questions asked ten.

I'm baffled though, after all this time they're got really simple things wrong(from what I've heard). Like no Leaderboards for one?!

C'mon. No brainer lads.

I think the problem with GT 5 is the long dev time for it, the game seems somewhat behind the times and to keep up stuff was added onto it through the dev cycle. Also like others have said the racing genre has moved on and online functionality has improved a lot of the years. Just seems to me they were trying to do so much in so many areas things are weaker than others like the premium cars and the normal ones.

you need to lvl up to unlock more damage

incredible idea isn't it? this is the thing that should be in pokemon not in gran turismo

why would you want to unlock damage? it should be there from the start. How is that feeling rewarding? is this a joke?

It did fail to live up. It was supposed to defeat Forza and it failed at that.

You're only telling one side of the story. Why?

There are clearly huge aspects of the game that didn't live up to expectations.

A more balanced perspectiveis the consensus seems to bethat some elements are incredible and its clear that PD put alot of work into the physics and stuff like that and the game has craptons of content, but the game asa wholejust does not seem to hang together as well as people thought it would and does not have the polish that is expected of GT games.

GT/Sony fanboys will try to isolate certain comments and keep them out of their proper context (like TintedEyes) but people expected for this to be both an incredible sim and a polished game, the product of a 'perfectionist' developer. So, in not fulfilling the latter, it did not live up to expectations.

LOL I bet you were one of the cows that was hyping the game to beat Forza and it failed miserably at that. Its a pity that those quotes couldn't be backed up with a figure

What?

I never said it wasn't because I'm absolutely sure it is amazing. But the fact remains that here in magical make-believe SWs, that if a game falls short of its hype, then it thus " Fails to live up to expectations ".

Easy.

its expectations was to be an amazing racing sim, these comments proved it did that

What?

I never said it wasn't because I'm absolutely sure it is amazing. But the fact remains that here in magical make-believe SWs, that if a game falls short of its hype, then it thus " Fails to live up to expectations ".

Easy.

we dont know that yet

Yes but it may be quite safe to assume.

I doubt its MC score is going to change drastically.

ign rated it a 10/10 as a racing sim in the body of the review. You just have to completely ignore everything else about their review and just focus on that one part and its easy to see it clearly met and exceeded the hype.

well. i think one reason that it apparently did not live up to expectations because once people hype about games a lot they get to hyped and it ends up under their expectation.

10/10 as a racing sim but not as a good game and thats what matters most if the game is good

"The best racing sim on consoles, by some margin" - IGN. "this is the Holy Grail of driving games." - Eurogamer. "The level of care taken by the people at Polyphony Digital shines in every aspect of this title, and this makes for a racing game that truly has no parallel. Gran Turismo 5 is a massive love letter to those that love cars. This is their dream videogame." - Destructoid "The cars themselves are another obvious factor in making GT 5's racing second to none." - Gameinformer it definitely failed to live up TC.TintedEyes

Those are the positive criticisms, what are the negatives? The numbers reflect both, and so far, they have been far from impressive.
