Note for moderators: given that this is a lengthy graphical comparison, I didn't put it in the stickied thread. Also, I was hoping discussion would focus on two games rather than one. I hope it's cool.

I wasn't impressed with the new trailer for two reasons:

1) it's back to Liberty/NY City

2) I found the graphics to be unimpressive

Here's what I mean:

The Getaway PS3

Now, I think there are some impressive aspects to IV's graphics (i.e. the water, main character, and lighting), but The Getaway PS3 does it better in every respect (pedestrians, lighting, buildings, cars).

I am not saying The Getaway will be a better game - believe me, I've played the first. But stricty in terms of graphics, I expected GTA IV to outshine The Getaway. It didn't.

Edit: for those of you who are saying The Getaway was CGI, watch this demo:

Am I wrong in thinking all of the GTA demo was FMV? Even so, I thought the game looked great visually. A few minor jaggies don't bother me.

Those are screen shots of Getaway from 2005, anymore recent ones, I'm pretty sure thats when sony released all that CGI. I'm not saying it won't look like that, it's just doubtful coming from sony in 2005.

wasn't that Gtaeway video shown during the infamous E3 2005 with all the fake CGI game footage. You know the one with Kill Zone 2. Even Resistance was found out to be fake. Unless you have proof that Gateway was not also CGI I don't think you should compare them

well GTA has always had kinda cartoony graphics whereas The Getaway has had realistic graphics...i think they both look awesome, but The Getaway seems like it could end up being a serious piece of work (graphically)!

They've done the exact same demonstration many times, it was even shown at GDC with about 100 NPCs or something like that.

I love the PS3 more than anybody, and while I feel the PS3 will one day be able to accomplish those shots...I feel what was shown off for the PS3 at that time was nothing more than a tech demonstration.

Now I'm not saying that thoses aren't actual PS3 graphics, I'm saying that that isn't demonstraiting what it would look like when someone is acltully playing it.

Remember the old Mass Effect videos and screens?  I bet that was all realtime, but the recent gameplay screens...see my point.  I think that's what GTA4 will actually look like in gameplay.  Who knows what The Gataway will look like when it actually releases on the PS3.

The GTA4 trailer looked alot better than those still pictures do.

For the record, i'd bet alot of money that The Getaway looks nothing like that when it's released.

Sorry but I doubt those are screens from The Getaway gameplay. They look far too...pre-rendered if you get me. I think they're bullshots. I'd like to see both's gameplay though.

Grand Theft Auto has never really pushed the hardware that its been on. The game is more about dark humor and storyline than about pretty graphics.

While I would love a true-to-life game graphically from Grand Theft Auto, I don't think we will ever get there, not least of which is because of the intense governmental and public scrutiny that the game receives. If you think the game is on every concerned public figure's "hit-list" now, imagine the flak it would take if the graphics were true-to-life instead of stylized?

If you thought Hot Coffee was bad, imagine that mess.

As for New York, GTA Liberty City was a small corner of a fictionalized NY. Imaging a whole breathing state of NY (wilderness, big cities, small ones), not to mention a complete NY, NY, with Times Square and Broadway! That would make for an amazing game.

The getaway wont look that good. Those are prerendered. Just watch. It will probably end up coming out for 360 as well. Only an idiot would make a game for a system nobody has, or will have.

my point exactly.

People doubting getaway will look that good are seriously kidding themselves. Sony showed off a demo recently (i think gdc) which was realtime and showcased picadilly circus looking just as good as in those pics. I'm skeptical about it being as fun as Gran theft auto though.

:? Actually...(and this goes for all the other people posting ignorant comments) it was realtime with a controllable camera.  Don't  make me own you fools.  But the point is still the same.   It might not look like that during game intensive applications. It's just the engine.

Now I don't know if this game will look like this in gameplay, I do know that this is running off PS3 hardware.  Much like the earliy screen of mass effect we saw before they showed actuall gameplay screens....

Hardly, from anything we've seen thusfar the 360 has more graphical capabilities. Also, making a game that would be too big for the 360 would cost Rockstar an exuberant amount of money.

The Getaway demo is CGI - I hate to say that because I would really like for this generation to reach that graphical level - but all of the demos created for E3 2005 by Sony were CGI designed to show what they felt would be the graphics level of the PS3. This is no different than when they first showed FF7 versus the game we actually got.

Sony *always* exaggerates the graphics power of their machine.

The Getaway hasn't shown us a real video yet, whereas the video for GTA IV was all in-engine footage. They don't use FMVs in GTA, so what you're seeing is basically what the graphics in the game are going to look like. Are they mind blowing? I was frankly impressed by the lighting, the character models aren't much better, but they're HD, and the fact that the higher resolution is there is noticeable.

I personally thought the lighting added a lot to the game, and I apreciate how crisp GTA IV is - it'll be easy to see the cops :-P.

But yes, the Getaway is CGI, deal with it.

I've said this before, and I will say it again here. Judging a game's graphical assets before it ships is always a bad idea. Things get up-graded, down-graded, switched, manipulated, changed, removed, added, etc all the way up until a game ships.

When you have the final copy, then you can make the call, but using alpha, beta, pre-alpha, CGI, in-game engine shots, etc does not change the fact that what you have is hype, made specifically to show what things might/could look like. Nothing more, nothing less.

No one but the most rabid of fanboys should expect that Halo 3 or Killzone 2 look like their trailers. It most likely won't even be close.

However, I have no doubt that The Getaway will look better than GTA, since GTA has never been the prettiest game in the crowd. But, I whole heartedly believe that GTA will indeed be a better, more fun game to me and most people than The Getaway will, since no GTA game has let me down yet.

Yeah, I agree that nothing is finalized, but just looking at the current builds there's quite a big difference. And I agree with the last part that GTA will be a better game. But it doesn't make up for my disappointment. I mean, when I saw The Getaway demo at E3 two years ago, the first thought that came to my mind was, "if The Getaway looks like this, damn....GTA is gonna be amazing!" I wasn't expecting it to be the other way around.

Not really, I could use almost any game.  Hell even MGS4 deminished when Kojima added all of his gameplay intensive aspects he wanted in the game.  It comes with the territory.  A game engine running with nothing but the camera and itself will always produces a slightly more impressive image than what it can while running all that is required to be done ingame.

PS. I still expect MGS4 do blow everyone away when Kojima is finished re-optimizing his engine for both graphics and gameplay when he's read to release his game.

dude the latest gameplay trailer of mgs4 has far sharper textures than prior versions.  It's one of the finest examples  of next-gen out there. lemmings better hope this game isn't exclusive. and if it is exclusive they better hope it doesn't come out fall of this year. if heavenly sword and mgs4 are both out in the same year, sony's brand loyalty will probably prove more seductive to those still undecided on which next gen console to get.

I kept my hopes low, since there have been many tech demos (and I lump "hype trailers" in with that) that have shown scenes that looked to me to be real, and yet I know that is not possible this generation, on this hardware without making huge sacrifices in the game itself.

When I saw Saint's Row, I figured that was the bar for GTA IV to hit, and it so far looks better, so that to me is good.

Although I do agree The Getaway looks better, I don't think the screenshots do GTA justice; it looked a lot better in motion.

The GTA4 trailer looked alot better than those still pictures do.

For the record, i'd bet alot of money that The Getaway looks nothing like that when it's released.

You still don't understand that those Getaway renders are possible, do you? It's like simple HDR. Look at Gears of War. And how did GTAIV look better? Are you blind?

[QUOTE="fuzzysquash"]Yeah, I agree that nothing is finalized, but just looking at the current builds there's quite a big difference.

Disappointment ? That's where you fail. You don't know how good the draw distance of both games (Crackdown). You don't know if either of them will be full bugs. (Saints Row looks great, it's not really full of bugs, but there are some technical issues) Bottom line, don't judge unfinished games.
