I really really hate it when you see a 3D object poking through another 3D object. For example when a characters hair is sticking THROUGH their backpack or their shirt is going through their coat. It really bugs me. What say you SW waht are pet peeves of graphical glitches?

Yeah, any sort of clipping annoys the piss out of me.

Screen tearing makes me want to tear my hair out too.

I don't mind pop-in too much as long as it's not as bad as GTAIII/Vice City.

That's called clipping, and something that needs to be fixed next gen (prolly won't). I kept encountering this glitch in Deus Ex HR (PC) where the reflecting image on walls and on the ground was missing so it would show a rainbow image, I couldn't see a damn thing lol.

Can anyone provide a picture of what "pop-in" looks like or tell me what it is? I heard of this term before.

As for graphical glitches that I find annoying, it is either screen tearing or interlacing.

it's when an object in the distance isn't rendered until you reach a certain distance from it and then it suddenly pops into existence. it can also be a texture that loads later than it should and just jarringly appears.

The ones that force me to turn off a game. When a games breaks down on me, that's a really good way to make me instantly lose interest in the game.

360, I'm not sure if I was right about it being texture wrong though.

when I go across in towards the giant staircase guarded by sentinels, as I walk on the side that has the sun on it theres all these diagonal black lines going across it, it also sort of screen tears as well...

Jaggies and screen tearing annoy me the most. Clipping doesn't bother me so much unless it is like Dynasty Warriors 3 where the backs of some character's feet would pass through their robes every time they took a step. It looked really stupid.

Graphical glitches don't really annoy me that much (bland visuals are far worse than glitches), but if I had to name something, it would be pop-in and screen tearing.

You don't see all the white lines all over the tiles or the diagonal one on the pillar to the left?

They move around as your character moves. Luckily it is only on that elevator but it does look really weird while you're playing and lines are moving all over the ground.

Not a graphical glitch, but clipping is really annoying and distracting. Let's hope this is reduced drastically.

Not a glitch but I dislike pixelated, warping textures as seen on some old consoles like the PS1 and non-3D accelerated PC games.

Those may work in a game like Minecraft but it looks simply ugly when combined with a low rez and is also a reason why I think N64 aged better than PS1, graphically (due to filtered, smooth textures).

It's also the reason why I think N64 graphics look better than DS graphics (DS had those pixelated textures too).

Other than that, I also dislike non-native resolutions, blurry textures (the lack of AF), screen tearing, pop up/pop in, slowdowns, ect.

When textures simply disappear like when the road textures occasionally disappear in the Forza games and you can see the polygons or sky through it.

I don't remember graphica glitches that gets me mad, but I guess pop-in would be the one that annoys me the most.

But what I really hate is when your character goes through the walls and enters that underworld dimension as it usually means restarting-reloading.

The most annoying one is of course when a game freeze.

But after that, I really hate jaggies and pop-in is annoying. Clipping is ok to me during gameplay if it's not too much but inacceptable during cutscenes. Never noticed screen tearing ever in any game tho.

pop in. its an evil necessity but some games manage it really badly. Its the one significant blemish on witcher 2s graphics for example....the game suffers from cronic pop in (i have tried the various tweaks and they improve it a bit but not much). Close character pop in especially can drive me a bit nuts. Guild wars 2 is a more recent example. on lower shadow settings the shadows are only drawn very close to the player. so for me its either max shadows or no shadows.

Same here, I cannot stand that. Screws with my eyes really bad. I do a lot of gaming on PC and I refuse to give up v-sync, no matter how many frames it takes away.

Z-fighting is a phenomenon in 3D rendering that occurs when two or more primitives have similar values in the z-buffer. It is particularly prevalent with coplanar polygons, where two faces occupy essentially the same space, with neither in front. Affected pixels are rendered with fragments from one polygon or the other arbitrarily, in a manner determined by the precision of the z-buffer. It can also vary as the scene or camera is changed, causing one polygon to "win" the z test, then another, and so on. The overall effect is a flickering, noisy rasterization of two polygons which "fight" to color the screen pixels. This problem is usually caused by limited sub-pixel precision and floating point and fixed pointround-off errors.

my brain hurts now.

its an effect when two polygons are parrallel and so close or intersecting that the rendering engine is having a hardtime figuring out which one shold be rendered on top of the other. As a result the polygons will swapping between each other and create a flashing effect.

220px-Z-fighting.png

notice how the red and blue planes have similar cords, and as a result fight with each other to appear on top of the other.
