As far as this debate goes, I think if you're primarily a console/pc gamer the DS is a better secondary device. So if you're the type that plays your handheld only on trips or for short quick sessions before you go to bed the DS will fill that role nicely. It has unique games that are unlike what you'll find on the consoles, has better batterylife, and is easier to carry around.

However, if you are the type of gamer that actually will sit down and play a couple of hours on your portable and play it as much or even more then your home consoles then the PSP is the better choice. It really is the first portable that can be a home console replacement with games that are very close to home console titles with impressive graphics and in covering pretty much every major genre.

there are more -longer- games in DS than PSP in average(in fact it has more games in EVERY Genre!), and the graphics ARE still not impressive compared to a home system .The psp is as much as home system replacement as a DS,. which is to say, they arent.

I'm interested in Rpgs and so far I'm more leaning torward getting a DS because I love Nintendo handhelds.

theres as much as twice rpgs for ds than for PSP. and high quality ones.Like Chrono Trigger, more final fantasies .Maybe a hundreth of ds rpgs.On graphics , surely the psp games SOMETIMEs look better, for some reason, despite the huge difference in power, games like Zelda for DS push more then machine into showing beauty than the PSP.is like they try the psp game to look like a grand epic game while its not possible so it looks watered down.In the other hand, DS tries to show a great portable game(Ninja Gaiden) and it shows.

Lack of graphic filter and ramhurts ds games.

im supposed to even think that the gta image represents a good looking game?not to mention the zelda shot is in the middle of a custcene where the only background is the sea. Dont post stills as arguments. Thats the worst way to prove a point in games, since they are not slideshows and are subject to bias from the poster.

Also note that is a real time cutseceen.

You say you like nintendo handhelds and RPG's, then the DS is your best friend. It all the standard nintendo staples, plus some returning gems (golden sun is back), the world ends with you is my favorite game of the generation period (just beating out Mass Effect). Plus the future is looking bright for the DS scribblenauts is coming, Kingdom Hearts is coming, another Mario and Luigi is coming, buy it you won't regret it.

i do own both a psp and a ds myself, and you CAN be biased against a system you dont own. While its a real time custcene ,is not the way you play the game. You arent playing the game with the camera 2 inches in front of Link. You play the game from upward or behind the ship, the way nintendo wants you to look at the game.In the GTA picture, you do have a typical gameplay shot, the way the devs want you to.And it proves the point, it attempts to look like a console game, but in the end looks bad.If i did a close up shot at any model in GTA ,it would look blooky and just bad. PSP never impressed me with its graphics, and the DS much less, but when they go with an artistic and simple aproach, both succeed. And that aproach usually doesnt really takes much proccesing power. You also cant check framerates or smoothness in gameplay with stills. Facts they can be, but weak as argument tool.To verify your bias we must believe you are impartial, which is not possible. Facts are numbers, at least consensus, something meaningful. Not just the opinion, your word and 2 screenshots we have to believe they are unbiased because you say so. IF you ask me ,the force unleashed is one the best looking PSP games, much more than GTA is, and still is too weak to satisfy a console player. Just as Ninja Gaiden its impressive for DS and doesnt hurts the eyes, but still cant satisfy a core gamer. So the visuals are not the drive to buy either handheld. But overall, both achieve to have great looking games for their limits.

stating opinion as fact priceless.Still have no proof am biased.

Also this is a psp vs ds GRAPHIC theard lets use facts and games. The ds lack of Graphicsfilter tend to make some games look wrose than some n64 games. But at least it capable of better textures than the n64.Also at least the psp have a sound chip:)

The PSP is roughly equivalent to a PS2 and the DS is roughly equivalent to the Nintendo 64.famicommander

And everyone knows that a Nintendo 64 is far graphically superior to the PS2, so get the DS.

DS= N64 in grafix (it is superior in some ways but also slight inferior in others)

PSP= Somewhere in between Dreamcast and PS2 in grafix.

The PSP falls in between the PS and PS2 in terms of graphical proficiency (leaning closer to the PS2) while the DS falls in between the SNES and N64 (leaning closer to the SNES, pretty much a SNES with 3D ability).foxhound_fox
actually the DS is more powerful than the N64.

I'd rather keep a multimedia device separate from a single purpose device (in this case it's PSP). But oddly enough the iphone is quite possibly the only system that manages to do both multimedia and main purpose (phone :|) functionalities quite superbly.

Gonna Try to find the Best screenshots I can of a DS and PSP game. PSP definitely looks nicer, But DS has its fair share of beautiful games

DS:

3D :

FF4 DS

2D :

Yoshi's Island DS

PSP

3D:

Crisis Core

2D :

FF2 Anniversary.

Again- I'd assume game quality was more important than Graphics, but this thread is about what looks nice. I, at first, wanted to do FF comparison shots but I realized there there isn't a 2d FF game for DS (Revenant wings doesn't look too nice) So I chose the nicest I could find of both systems.

PSP... hands down. Look at Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core if you need any proof of that. However, don't let graphics alone make your handheld decision.

PsP is obviously better but you should be looking at the game libraries. I personally have a psp that I dont really use that much but played through ff7 crisis core and grand theft auto liberty city stories on some plane rides and they were awesome.

I would say most of the current and future PSP games, since 2008, look on-par with late-gen PS2 games. Games like GoW: Chains of Olympus and MGS Peace Walker basically look like their PS2 counterparts to me... which is quite impressive, since God of War and MGS3 were heralded as some of the most beautiful games on the PS2.

But aside from all the multimedia features, that's what you're getting after all, a handheld PS2. Which isn't a bad thing... especially now that the PS2 has basically passed on, the PSP is developing a more clear and defined library of exclusive games.

I have both PSP and DS...I bought myPSP for Daxter when it first came out...and i havnt touched it since...I bought My ds for Pokemon Diamond. The last game i bought for it was Rhythm Heaven... That should tell you which one i think is better! The PSP has better Graphics by FAR! Although with a game like Scribblenauts coming to the ds that can compete with any game graphicaly and gameplay-wise...i would choose a ds (Just kidding about the graphics...Scribblenauts has horrible graphics). But seriously Scribblenauts should be reason enough to buy a ds! What other game will let you summon God and let him fight Death or Cathulu (and many others)! Btw he looses when he fights Death...o_O......

Good for you. I got my handheld to play games on the go, not to have another iPhone (which I already have). If you have an iPod Touch or an iPhone, maybe even a laptop, the PSP's non-gaming abilities are useless.

From what I've seen it is close to what the N64 is capable of. It might have smoother framerates but it looks practically the same as most N64 games.

So how is it closer to the SNES? o_O

Because he has no clue what he is talking about. It is a lot closer to the N64 than it is to the SNES.
