Good question, and odd how people state that it is a console game, i recon it would be Company of Heroes or something but graphics were never as important to me back then so i really couldn't have cared whether i was playing a 1997 game or not.JohnF111

I thought it was the first STALKER, but I don't remember. Maybe it was Gears of War.

People say Gears, but I'd argue FEAR or Oblivion looked far better.

Gears 1 on 360 is really f'ing ugly. It did look really good for the time though...for consoles.

Crysis mods are allowed, so I'd say yes.

I'd say World in Conflict, but that was released like 2 months before Crysis. lol

I think it was Gears. Wouldn't be my personal choice though, game didn't look that impressive back then and it looks very mediocre now. I would say Stalker. Came out a few months before Crysis, certainly looks better than gear 1 on the 360.Ace6301

Why is everyone listing console games? Sorry console fans, but console games have never and will never hold the title of "graphics king" by default of no console game being able to run higher than native 720p. Today most PC gamers run their resolution at at least 1050p, more commonly 1080p or 1200p. Some even go as high as 1600p. Anyway, IIRC the game most people were using as graphics benchmark before Crysis was Oblivion. Before that it was Half-Life 2 and a few months before that it was FarCry.gameguy6700

I guess Gears Of War for PC but I could be wrong here. And BTW the pc one came out before Crysis and this topic did ask what game was the graphics king before Crysis came out.

I remember there being a huge war between Half Life 2 and Doom 3 for the longest time, and I don't remember Gears of War ever beating out a PC title. Modded Doom 3 is still hard to beat.

Also, no one has mentioned GRAW on 360? That was the 1st current-gen game to get a 10 for graphics. Gears being the next one.:!:

Anyway Gears of Wars I think.

Based off of my experience here on Gamespot i think it went like this starting in 2004. Doom 3 in 2004 (most of you may not have been here in 2004, but the debate was "HL2 is more realistic!" then "Well Doom 3 has much better detail!" and I don't think the debate ever really got settled, so HL2 may have been graphics king for some people). FEAR in 2005. Oblivion in 2006. Cysris in 2007 and it is still going strong.

I really don't think Gears of War or STALKER (especially not STALKER, even with the 2009 mod it still doesn't look much better than HL2) was ever considered graphics king.
