I really don't think Gears of War or STALKER (especially not STALKER, even with the 2009 mod it still doesn't look much better than HL2) was ever considered graphics king.

Uhh, I beg to differ.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I only remember Doom 3 being hailed as a graphics king while it was still in development. It got released around the same time as FarCry and HL2 so it never really got treated as a graphics king. It was definitely still hailed as one of the better looking games, but HL2 pretty much blew everything away until FEAR came along.Based off of my experience here on Gamespot i think it went like this starting in 2004. Doom 3 in 2004 (most of you may not have been here in 2004, but the debate was "HL2 is more realistic!" then "Well Doom 3 has much better detail!" and I don't think the debate ever really got settled, so HL2 may have been graphics king for some people). FEAR in 2005. Oblivion in 2006. Cysris in 2007 and it is still going strong.

As for GeoW, it was only hailed as a graphics king by X360 fanboys who didn't pay attention to anything happening on the PC. And I'm just as perplexed as you are as to why people claim that STALKER is such a good looking game all the time.
No it didn't, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Vanilla doesn't look that good, the 2009 Complete Mod is what makes it probably the 2nd best looking game out there, but that didn't come until later.S.A.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow Of Chernobyl. Did trample Gears as a bulldozer over a hedgehog in the roadway.

Gears wasnt the graphics king before Crysis. 2007 up untill Crysis was a period of short reigning graphics kings. The order was
FEAR
Gears of War
Lost Planet
STALKER
Heavenly Sword
World in Conflict
Crysis

I don't think either Lost Planet or Heavenly Sword look better than the original Gears. I haven't played Fear or Stalker.

Back in 2007 Crysis graphics were good. Today there just plain ugly and nothing amazing.
Silverbond
What game looks better?
Most, Crysis has a horrible draw distance. The AF and AA are a joke. All the texturestreaming and late loading textures????!!!!!!
Lame ass excuse for lazy development.....Crytek claimed they couldn't get AF and POM to work together properly but lonely modder did. AA and EdgeAA can't work side by side so either way the game is going to look ugly as hell.
Of last gen... probably HL2, followed by RE4.
This gen? Couldn't tell you without someone getting mad.

Couldn't even say anything about last gen without causing controversy. (hangs head, walks out in shame, and gets abducted by aliens.)

Did it look bad on PC?
No but he likes to think the consoles and PC graphics are close... which they aren't. The PC version definitely looked better.what the hell are you talking about?

Plenty of people that I know think they were great and still hold up pretty well :|
Seriously, good textures good lighting, not the best models I guess, but it was on a pretty great scale. It looks even better in motion.

I played Quake Wars non stop back then for a good 7 months. That's the only game I played, but to say it is anywhere near a graphics contender is crazy imo. WiC looks much better than it and it's a RTS.[QUOTE="Blade8Aus"][QUOTE="millerlight89"] People were wowed by Quake Wars graphics? That's pretty sad.millerlight89

Doom 3 was never graphics king. FarCry had already been out for 4 months when Doom 3 was released.
Also, Doom 3 was not like Crysis. An x800 pro or 6800GT could max the game out at the time (I know because my x800 pro, FX-53, 1GB RAM rig maxed it out with no problem). There was an artificial limit placed if the game didn't detect 512MB of VRAM, but that limitation could be bypassed with little actual consequence.
If I remember correctly the oldest graphics king(in the age of games oriented benchmarks, after the age of gpu oriented benchmarks) I can think of was Farcry, then a few months later it was between the big three of 2004 Farcry, Half Life and Doom 3. After them it was F.E.A.R. and after that it was Oblivion. Don't know if I'm skipping something.
So, no one answered my question yet. What was graphics king before Gears of War? sethman410
Going by System Wars nothing since the Graphics King around here means something totally different than the original one that was at first the best PC GPU in the market and later became the best game to push the limits of the best cards in the market and basically a must be in any decent benchmark analysis.

Oblivion with mods. Before that was FEAR. Before that was Battlefield 2/Oblivion without mods/Doom 3.
Ignoring system wars, the oldest graphics king I know of was the original Half-Life back in 1998.If I remember correctly the oldest graphics king(in the age of games oriented benchmarks, after the age of gpu oriented benchmarks) I can think of was Farcry, then a few months later it was between the big three of 2004 Farcry, Half Life and Doom 3. RE4 most certainly was in the top ten graphics of last generation. We accept your apology.Erm helloooooooooo? Oblivion? Anyone?
Gears of War PC > Oblivion PC > Gears 360 > Oblivion 360
Or wait.. didn't Gears PC come out march 2007? if so that was the graphics king til Crysis came out nov 2007.

I remember how awesome this level looked.
Also, no one has mentioned GRAW on 360? That was the 1st current-gen game to get a 10 for graphics. Gears being the next one.:!:
GRAW got a 9.0 on graphics... not 10 9.0 Graphics Top-notch everything -- character models, interactive environments, special effects and lighting. One of the few really impressive Xbox 360 games on the market. Jesus where do people get their 'facts' from... Gears of War was the first game this gen to get a 10 on graphics, not GRAW.S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had the best lighting and shadows I believe. Half-Life 2 games had the best animations, especially facial. Gears... I dunno, wasn't that impressed by it.
I thought it was Fear? I always thought it looked better than GoW anyway (but I never played gears on PC that said).
Gears of War PC. A title which it held for...7 days.
BigBoss154
Actually, I take that back. I didn't realise World in Conflict came out before it.
So I'll say World in Conflict.
