Graphics Ruining Games

Gameplay>Graphics. But good visuals won't hurt either.

Im not trying to say they dont matter, but it seems like some company's now are just focusing on graphics solely, and do not really have appealing challenges or a good storyline, most games can be beat within a good 3-4 days now where as old games unless you spent all day took months

But its true. As graphical capabilities increase, so does the ability of the developers to tell a more engrossing story and/or create a more engrossing world.

Great looks just have to go with great gameplay or the game will suffer. But graphics are important, at least to a point.

well the big focus nowadays is graphics, but soon enough, it wont be when u cant perfect graphics any more. i never cared about graphics, sure they look nice, but wat it all comes down to and should come down to is the gameplay. Games should be praised for their stories and game mechanics/gameplay, not because the main character's sweat is so prominant and reeeeal.

some of my favorite games (Goldeneye, Banjo-Kazooie, syphon filter, supermario64) dont rely on visual appeal, but run only on fun and great gameplay. Hail to those who think higher of gameplay, not graphics.

Older games were also based on the Arcade mindset. AKA make it tough as hell to suck in quarters. Now games are more about story, and therefore, more developers are wanting the majority to reach the payoff.

Many games do have a hard mode for those who want a challenge, and there are still quite a few games that have brutal difficulties.

Well seeing as damage control about gamerankings appeared as soon as mgs4 got a ten, Ill start there. First off to say, the whole series is AAA there. Plus mgs2 got AAA here. Mgs3 scored AA simply because it started off very slowly with gameplay in the beginning. Thats coming straight from the gs review....and to say the least, while mgs1 was a well done game, it was sort of trial and error leaving room for improvement in the sequels. So if we are infact talking about graphics only then I dont think that would matter. If all the other elements were still there, it would be fine. There is one mention of graphics for the good in the mgs4 review....and the story is on both good and bad. So no, I dont think it matters.....assuming graphics are the issue here with everything else still there.

graphics do matter because i sure as hell know that many great games wouldnt be the same without graphics or technical features.

Also games are getting easier because devs are making games more appealing to casuals.

Graphics have become a much bigger selling point these days, hence a lot of focus is put on making games look great.

But still, when you look at all the great games of the past, the majority of them had some of the best graphics on their respective system when they came out.

every gen has tried to raise the graphical bar...

i remember thinking that mario 64 was one of the greatest gaming accomplishments in graphics ever...granted i was like 12...but at the time it had serious wow factor...and so did a game like mortal kombat in the arcades...hell i remember seeing the 1st 3d fighter in virtua fighter and having my jaw drop...

as a kid during that time we always wondered how much better gaming would get...it will always be the same not only in gaming but in all technologies ...we will always continue to progress...unless like obama gets elected and he raises taxes on everybody and ruins the economy....

I somewhat agree... The old system wars, like between SNES vs SEGA, were about which games were funner, not about which system had the better graphics. zatoninja

i agree, its rather sad that the focus has shifted from lenghty single player experiances in a varity of genres to "single player?...pfft!, sidethought. lets get grizzly macho shirtless men with guns and focus on some online fragfest!"

though i would say its about a 70-30 split between the importance of gameplay and grafics, i do have certain expectations but not very high.

honestly games this gen combine graphics and gameplay in a way that is awesome, such as in gears of war, or MGS4.

you can have both. it's not limitied to one or the other.

economy is not in shambles...it was in a slowdown and now its slowly creeping back up...we never even had any negatgive quarters in 8 years...and bush's gdp numbers are comparable to clinton's

clinton cut the military in half and caved in to a republican congress which basically ran the economy while clinton sat there and got pleasured in the oval office

reagan inherited the country after jimmy carter basically turned the country into a toilet and created one of the largest peace time economic properity periods of all time

bush sr betrayed conservative values and raised taxes...which is why he lost

and also you must equate the defict in relation to gdp...when you do that bush's deficit is actually smaller than reagan's and half the size of kennedy's and jhonson's in the 60's ...the actual number of the deficit doesn't matter because the economy is just so much bigger than it ever was in the past...in fact barring any major depression the economy is always bigger as time passes because we are constantly growing....

Also, it doesn't help that since MGS1 the plot's gotten so bloated that you could pop it with a toothpick. Just some terrible, terrible writing.
