An excellent and well-balanced article on X1 vs. PS4.

For my own part, if I am spending 400 to 500$ then it had better do more than just games. This is a decision between which console will deliver the best entertainment for your dollars.

It has been strange to see all the demos and live streams of PS4 on and around launch day. For a console that Sony said was all about gaming suddenly now seems to be all about being an entertainment hub, unfortunately, it just isn’t (yet, a lot will be patched later).

Microsoft was forced by its consumer base to alter its strategy after E3 and it has do so with remarkable speed. Yet even so, it is still evident that MS has a clear vision with the X1, Sony on the other hand seems to be all over the show…

Anyone else not impressed by Sony’s stumbling with the PS brand?

Great article, wont go down well here as it has some good things to say about the Xbox One.

PS4 has the indie games, better resolution which equates to slightly better looking graphics, Xbox One has innovation, better UI, better services, better features, better network, better launch games and commitment to the console throughout the lifespan.

If you where wanting the best indie and graphics you would get a PC, PS4 wins nothing. Xbox One at least beats the PS4 and PC in certain areas.

Theres a lot of fanboys out there hence the good PS4 sales, but theres more Xbox One and non console fanboys out there that might find the Xbox One attractive. Nice move Microsoft.

Everything else aside, hardware does matter. In this case, there's even a clear victor -- at least on paper. Crack open either console, and you'll find an AMD APU with an eight-core Jaguar CPU at its heart. A slightly higher clock speed (1.75Ghz compared to 1.6GHhz) gives Microsoft's console a technical leg up, but these two rigs essentially share the same processor. Users aren't likely to see a difference in performance. The story flips when it comes to the graphics kit, however: Although both units use similar AMD Radeon graphics cores, Sony's features 18 compute units to Microsoft's 12. The PS4 is also equipped with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, outclassing the slower DDR3 chips installed in the Xbox One.

SDC

Thank you Sony.

I'm not impressed by Sony at all, but I'm not bashing them either. Both systems gaming-wise offer essentially the same, and it's really grasping at straws to compare the experience. However, the UI, multiplayer experience and multimedia capabilities is where the real difference is at. Whether one cares about those factors or not is another ballgame altogether.

That's a fully Kinect integrated Netflix, guess you get what you pay for. Just look at Sony's network.

PS4 is a game system. The other media features are quite ho-hum (albeit streaming is handled incredibly well).

Fairly sure Sony was the one that supported already two consoles through 10+ years ( PS1 & PS2) while MS dumped the OG Xbox soon after it launched for the 360... just saying. As for better features, network, etc; it remains to be seen. We'll find out after the 22nd though.

So on the one hand because Microsoft have supported their console as well as they could have they are going to do the same this time round (even though they are much more committed). Yet even though Xbox Live has been better throughout the last generation and Microsoft are have a much better infrastructure we have to wait and see which has the better network.

Seem pretty two faced to me.

@nexus303:

The XB1, IMO, is the better next-gen system because it is more than a gaming console.

My only big problem with Xbox One is the power disparity. Its GPU is just too far behind PS4. Other things that were issues early on they've fixed but they did nothing to improve the hardware.

But in any event, neither of these consoles are worth buying for at least a year. By then there might be something to play and most of the issues ironed out. Perhaps when Witcher 3 comes out is when I'll make the plunge. I lean heavily towards PS4 right now but I'd choose Xbox if the hardware were more equal.

I have said it lots of times but if it was all about the graphics I would have been a PC gamer years ago.

For me its about living room entertainment. Gaming and movies for me the missus and the kids. I need a system that ticks multiple boxes and I like kinect integration even if its just for operating the UI...I think its a great addition.

For me it boils down to...

X1...interesting multipurpose entertainment machine with interesting kinect integration.

PS4....games console with slightly better graphics....its not a bad console....but its certainly nothing to get excited about.

The hardware disparity is a non-issue for me; I know that in SW terms the PS4 is bigger and better because of a small advantage in raw horsepower. In reality though, I’m not going to notice it as it can only be seen whilst viewing the material side by side. Furthermore, some of the third party games won’t have any difference at all just like this past gen where some were saying that the PS3 was 1.5x faster than the 360.

As the article stated, I think this gen will be defined by the services we use. I’m really excited to see how the X1s app store is going to play out for example.

The disparity is 40%-50%. I think that's gonna be noticeable.

However, I do think MS will end up outdoing Sony when it comes to services and online. If only they could have designed the damned hardware right. :(

I'm not sure that it is (HW wise), same thing was said about last gen and yet a lot of third party games ended up working better on the 360.

Here is a recent article on the HW differences and their real world implications.

Yes the smart money is on MSFT for online at least, Sony does own a lot of media content so they could make some killer moves there.

That was because of the complicated architecture of PS3. Cell was powerful in theory but rarely showed it because working with it is like pulling teeth. That ain't the case this time. Both architectures are simple. Heck, because it doesn't use ESRAM PS4's is probably more simplistic than Xbox One's and it's got the 40%-50% better GPU as well. It's gonna be evident this time.

Ps4 has Netflix which is really all I use for tv do in good of the rest of the stuff. Having it isn't bad but I'm not missing it either. Also, keeping the features behind the live pay wall is just stupid.

Guess this time its not all about "it only does everything"? Funny how last gen it was the entertainment hub, this gen, when the other does it, its a games console.

^ ^ This. I don't give a shit about media features on my console. My laptop, ipad, and phone already do a lot as it is and have way more features than any console could ever hope to match. When I buy a GAME CONSOLE I expect the makers of the console to focus on making my gaming experience as great as possible. That means giving me the best Performance in my games not spending money on a weak ass shitty GPU and spending the rest of the money on a gimmick camera that doesn't do shit for games.

I am only worried about the games. Both are not very good for video streaming. They don't even support MKV files. Playstation has a much faster GPU and better graphics, it's $100 cheaper.

If you are truly comparing on numbers of games, the Xbox One will win as soon as it opens the Windows 8 app store. 10k+ games and growing. It will always be a head on numbers.

Xbox One will still have more retails games out in 6 months time never mind 1.

The same thing can be said about gaikagi ... but you dun see cows bitching about it .... you know why? because they are not yjay desperate ............. yet!

I doubt that, we all saw what MS can offer the last gen ... it's just a fraction of what Sony can offer.

Huh, even with Gaikagi it wont have nearly the same amount of games and the Xbox Live will still be superior.
