yea, too many people get modded here i think

i have a few times

i mean this IS system wars...WAR is in the title mods

nothing against you, but c'mon...tempers flare in this place...we deserve a ton of slack, what we say is based on how heated the argument gets...and that's what SW is...is just a bunch of arguments

i understand if you mod someone for cussing or whatever...but if an idiot or two slips out, we shouldn't be modded for that

CDUB316

the war is among the systems. it's not against the people who post here.

Whatever happened to Cakeorrdie? I remember he continued to be very active here after he became a moderator, but I haven't heard from him for a long while.

To be fair Tuef isn't exactly an embassador for all mods, I guess different mods interpret the TOS differently. I do think mods as a collective though should be more receptive to the community, as generally the users here aren't always entirely happy with the ways things are conducted here, and it's always important to listen to a community.

gingerdivid

Indeed. The more of a dictatorship you run, the greater chance of revolution. And I'm certain if there was a revolution against the mods/admin, it wouldn't be pretty and probably do a lot of damage to the Gamespot site and its reputation. I'd say its about time the mods and admins start listening to the community more and especially get the ToU reworked in a way that doesn't allow "moderator discretion."

The only rules that need to be observed are 1) offensive/pornographic/discriminatory/libelous material or writing, 2) illegal activities or the promotion of illegal activites and 3) advertising. Those are the only rules in the ToU I agree with. If people are taking everything else too seriously, they need to get off the internet.

Even on a more basic level, to alienate the community - the lifes blood of the sites popularity, isn't exactly desirable. and lol, the closest thing to a revolution we've had here is Gertsmangate and an attempt to migrate to Giant Bomb.

It feels immature to point fingers, but although Casey is around to explain and define rules (there's too many nowadays), he dosen't contribute the the community aside from a stray thread, and he's not open to changing the rules, i think that's part of the problem, as it's his strict adherence which hurts the community.

i used to post here quite a bit more often but i just don't have the same amount of free time anymore.

In context I can understand why SW bets is gone but man, it was such a great part of the community. Just the effort of reassembling something similar doesn't seem as though it would be worth the effort honestly. Mainly though, the whole idea is context, the bets were more like fun little harmless things like sigs, or pics. The 13 year old crowd of SW has to also abide by the TOU and is not subject to "being watched" by the older community so if they cannott handle it, I don't see it as fair for the rest of the community to suffer for abiding to TOU. I can understand the removal but not "for the protection of younger gamespotters"

Teufelhuhn

Well like I said the only real problem with it was the fact that it had the word "bets" in the title. If someone wanted to bring it back, it would be fine as long as it had a different title and didn't mention "gambling" anywhere (and as long you werent' wagering money, of course :P).

If that was really the only problem, I wonder why we had to delete every trace of the thread's existence, including the union, the signatures and a ton of memories and records, instead of, you know, asking us to change the name...

You'd know more than I would; do the admins realize they screwed up and failed the community here?

I don't know, I guess you just have to realize that things change....even this place. That being said, it is still my preferred gaming forum by far. Most news breaks here before a lot of the major sites even get word of it and there are still plenty of lulz to be had as well. It is indeed rare, but a few good discussions can also be found from time to time. Anyway, I bet business will pick up a bit when all the holiday releases start to drop.

You can blame CNET and its gestapo of a legal team for that.

It really depends on your view on what "System wars" is about.

For me, its about the trolls, the laughters, the entertainment, the fun and the chaos (not total chaos) w/ a little mix of seriousness and logic. Thats what makes SW so great back then a few years ago (that + the awesome posters).

Itsjust that Mods have a different view on what it is hence their need for stricter regulations which (imo) undermines what SW is all about.

Lawl. I suppose. "Legal" is a scary word when it comes to something like this, and it's clear that GS hit panic mode and didn't consider any other options. I just want to know if they recognize that what they did was a mistake.

As I said, I doubt GS had anything to do with it. They probably just got some notice from CNET ordering them to take drastic action. There's a reason CNET isn't exactly viewed as a respectable and amiable corporation.

This was the only thing that crossed my mind. There had to be more to it and I think whoever was responsible should have gave us a clear reason. If it was just the use of bets, I doubt that the whole existance of the system would have to be destroyed.

Surely they got the order to deal with the issue one way or another, but with such an easy fix as an option, some of the blame has to lie with GS.

Take heart younglings! There is a place on the net to talk about games that is uncensored & doesn't come with the baggage of Gamespot. It's called GiantBomb. Most of the old crew that built this site are there. Give it a look & see for yourself.

But it does happen. I had a sig up of a certain gif for months. Finally someone decided to mod me? I was kind of suprised at the fact that there is no way to debate these mods. I'm sure lots have their own fun filled modded story. Please humble Musicalmac.

I don't post here nearly as much I I used to. I agree that the forum is about the systems and not the users and I'm fine with the zero tolerance of insults towards other users.

That being said, I should be able to write whatever I want about a system itself. These are electrical devices composed primarily of plastics, one should not be worried about offending people with different opinions. Moderators have a very broad definition of trolling/flaming that needs to be narrowed down to the obvious.

Honestly, I don't really know what happened back when Nintendo Bets came down. I wasn't a mod then. All I really have to go on is the discussions that occured when the Nintendo Dream union created "Risk"...as far as I know they were told that it was all fine as long as they used the right wording.

However I'm not really surprised that everything was nuked once legal got involved. They probably wanted to make sure that anything that would give them liability would be removed for good, and were worried about the huge number of places in the thread that there might have been references to "betting". But that's just a guess on my part...

Well that didn't stop you from calling all the mods "over zealous double standard types that are made to feel like gods". I'm betting the reason it took so long for you to get hit with a moderation is because of your low post count. We are not the omnipresent gods you make us out to be. ;)

As for SW Bets... It still exists in a different form, but nobody cared to keep on going with it.

Ah, I forgot about that. That was probably a good time not to be a mod. :P

But to not even consider that option, hell, even just to warn us about the legal issue beforehand (we literally logged on one day and everything was gone)...no matter what the order was from CNET, the situation was handled terribly.

But anyway, soRisk is fine then? 'Cause there was that issue aboutmentioning Nintendo Points (which I removed after) andthe thread getting locked (which I unlocked), and that was the last we heard about it. Just making sure.

how can you say that? the forum is all about the people, this forum was better when it let more things go, and when there was a broader range of opinions. The only people left just say. "Oh looks nice, maybe I'll get it IMO." "I think you're being irrational IMO." "What's with all the fanboys, all systems are equal IMO."

Tis Shameful.

Yes, but because people were all bent out of shape at the time, nobody cared to pursue it. And any talk of starting this up again, or Risks, or anything that related to SW Bets can be discussed privately, and not on the open forum. Feel free to PM me.

I'm just saying I think its ok to moderate people for calling someone stupid but not to moderate them for saying the PS3 is stupid.

In your opinion you think people should be able to directly insult other users? I don't see the benifit.

It seems whenever a post comes up about the good old days of SW there is immense praise on what this place used to be as well as how the posters used to be. All but two. Apparently the posters Dremsvions and Blackbond had some sort of love hate thing going on here. Everyone else seems to get universal praise but these two always get mixed bag from what I've seen.

Might have been nice to see the old days.

This place wont get interesting again until the next consoles are announced. There is really nothing else to be said about this gen.

Here if you call someone "an idiot" you get modded.

I still can't believe those two were banned.

Somehow I think that your disbelief with their being banned is related to the fact that you don't seem to think calling someone an "idiot" should result in moderation.

People get pretty passionate about this hobby thus it can get heated. The modding does seem at times a little overdone, and if your humor is gone as a result of this place let someone else sit in your chair for a bit.

The mods here are over zealous double standard types that are made to feel like gods constanltly warning and banning for 5 days. See ya'll next week..not by choice..but by modders choice.

Actually, you can be suspended for 5 days. But if you get banned, that's all she wrote. I will humor you, though. Why do you think all the mods are double standard types that are made to feel like gods?

If you wanting specifics, I'm sure that would be another fun filled thread. But I'm afraid of the thin line of rules of starting another thread like this would obliterate my account. But it does happen. I had a sig up of a certain gif for months. Finally someone decided to mod me? I was kind of suprised at the fact that there is no way to debate these mods. I'm sure lots have their own fun filled modded story. Please humble Musicalmac.

you don't know about the "ask the mods forum" or customer service?

Ask the mods so you can wait days in on out to get an answer. If this was a pay site it would have been shut down first month b/c of the CS issue with the MODS here. I dont completely agree with rudy but the MODS on this site are something else. But on topic yes SW is the same old and i been here for over a yr and get tired of posting if not b/c of abused threads then because of lack of freedom of speech.

Almost five full years and I'm not tired yet. :D Yes, I think everyone can agree that threads can really get abused here at times. As for that last bit about freedom of speech or a lack thereof, I have to ask what you mean by that.

If you mean the kinds of topics around here, then I could agree that things could be a bit more lenient as I really do miss my character battles among other things. :( However, given the previous subjects in the quote chain, I assume you mean censorship of posts that slight posters in any way in which case I have to disagree with you. Heavily.

  1. While it's tempting to call someone an idiot, especially in a heated argument, once some mud gets thrown around, System Wars becomes Flame Wars quickly. Fun for me to watch. Not so much fun for anyone actually caught in the fire.
  2. Unless my understanding of US law is incorrect, much like Canada, there's more than just freedom of speech. There are also things like the rights to life, liberty, and (mental) security that take priority over freedom of speech. This site has 13-17 year-olds. Have to cater to them too.
  3. We voluntarily agreed to give up our rights anyhow upon joining this site. Everyone hates reading things like EULA's or ToU's, but they're there to inform you ahead of time to let you know ahead of time what kind of crap you'll have to deal with. Not reading the fine print is your fault.

System Wars is fun. You just have to take it with a grain of salt and not take it so seriously.

I've grown tired of this forum. It's all about graphics and exclusives. It's lost it's charm. That's why I'm barely here anymore.
