According to a new rumor, Sony has been in talks with Rockstar Games over making GTA 6 a PS5-timed exclusive. The rumor comes way of Foxy UK Games, who claims the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series may be coming to PS5 first with Sony and Rockstar Games discussing a deal worth $750 million. And if it goes through, GTA 6 will launch on PS5 first, and remain a PS5 exclusive for at least 30 days. It's expected exclusive content may also be involved.

Meh. I'm planning to wait six years and get it free on Epic, like the last one.

@Jag85: it would actually take over 40 million GTA6 sales at $60 on a 30% cut for Sony to break even in game sales alone of GTA6 on PS5 should they make such a deal. But they also do make a considerable amount on microtransactions so that likely take a lot less. But given this idea is to be a title that brings users to PS5 instead of Series X then subsequent game sales are also something for Sony to consider so nonetheless I can see it as profitable down the road. I think it would be up to Rockstar to determine if this will be better for their bottom line in the end.

A quick Google of GTA5 sales on XB1 say short of 9 million worldwide, assuming most profitable as $60 sale, 70% cut to publisher, that would mean $378 million on sales alone at a most generous estimate. And at one point game was said to make more or just as much on microtransaction than sales. Interesting idea because that might put potential profitability of game to publisher on XB1 at close to that $750 million figure at (again) a most generous estimate.

So, maybe first question Rockstar would ask themselves is do they think GTA6 stands to sell better on Series X than XB1. If they think it will sell worse, then the deal would seem an obvious choice. If it stands to sell the same, I would still imagine they would prefer having money up front than spend years earning it. I imagine Rockstar might decline such an offer if they think the Series S/X stands to sell more than the XB1 and that GTA6 sales would do substantially better on it. I think it's a safe assumption Microsoft's next console isn't going into launch with the same resentment that the XB1 did might be something to weigh. Then again I can see top executives at Rockstar and Take Two salivating at opportunity to spoil themselves with lavish executive bonuses.

I can only see this as plausable if deal keeps it off next Xbox. Maybe 30 day deal is simply delaying PC version. Otherwise, if such a deal doesn't keep it off Series X, I won't blame Take Two / Rockstar for taking it, but I would question whether Sony is using their money wisely. But if they manage to keep it off Xbox, they made a smart deal. I would of course loathe all parties involved for making it.

Sony doesnt just "have" $750 million lying around that they can just drop on a moments notice for nonsense like this. They are not Microsoft.

Sony (the entire company) made $5.3 billion in operating profits, in their entire last fiscal year. Aka, roughly ten times less than Microsoft in that same period.

Its puzzling to me why Cows think Sony, who again (by ALL available consumer research polls and engagement metrics) are FAR ahead in interest for the PS5 according to Cows, are pulling out the checkbook and running to literally every third party publisher, begging for an extravagant exclusive deal..........

While also suggesting that Sony is not threatened by Gamepass or free Xbox Live , and can match it if they wanted to (sacrificing another $2-3 billion dollars revenue).........

While also suggesting that Sony has the upper hand on price and is going to undercut Microsoft, a company with both the means and a clear market impetus to not let that happen.

I dont get it......Where on earth do you guys think Sony is getting all this money from, and why do you guys constantly expect a company at the TOP of their momentum to burn it all away on some crazy loss leader strategy that (and I cant stress this enough) they have absolutely no reason to engage in? Sony cant be all things to all people lol. Playstation is basically one of the ONLY profitable divisions in the entire company.

Impossible. That would be two times more that the development costs of GTA6. With that kind of money they can just buy exclusive rights for GTA6, not just one month.

There is just about no way in hell SONY would dish out three quarters of a billion dollars for one month exclusivity, I would even doubt 3. Now, I would believe timed exclusivity or exclusive deals on other in game items.

This is one of the worst rumors I've ever heard.. lol. If it winds up being true somehow someway then I'll eat my crow but be completely puzzled none the less.

They could produce 5-10 high quality exclusive games for that price and that's nearly 3 times the price GTA 5 took to produce although I do understand the game prints money for whatever reason...

If they were going to go that route then they might as well just make a new studio and make their own game like GTA only better. Just add an online mode with a ton of mtx and voila.

They can make 15 games, each costing 50 million for that I kind of money. Sony is not foolish when it comes to the PlayStation brand. I am not sure why anyone would believe this.

i can see 750 million total on every third party exclusive or timed exclusive or deal.

thats all of them not just one developer. like 5 million for this deal or 10 million for that deal.

Sony definitely looking to put MS to the sword next generation. Any exclusivity for rockstar games is a win.

Including any exclusive 3rd party game deals in entirety, timed exclusivity, and bonus material and/or permanent exclusivity? Yes, I could see that as well. That would be MUCH more believable as a running total. From the rumors going around that said SONY went to basically every dev team and tried to strike deals that is an actual believable number and I would be much more onboard with that rumor.

$750 million for 30 days of exclusivity?

That has got to be one of the stupidest, most bone-headed wastes of cash I’ve ever heard of.

Rumor is bullshit.

Makes no sense. No one would get SX over PS5 just because both consoles have GTA6. The console purchase is always about first party exclusives, not some times exclusivity bullshit, especially if it's only 30 days.
