Remember i didnt write this.

For as much flak as Peter Moore got while leading the Xbox 360 team, it's hard to deny that his penchant for adorning his arms gave gamers a couple of very memorable moments. I mean, before Peter Moore's E3 2005 stunt, had you ever seen another executive get a (fake) tattoo for a key franchise (Halo)? And then, not to be outdone, walk into a second E3 with another (fake) tattoo for another franchise (GTA IV)? Seriously, Moore was Microsoft's biggest publicity whore, and he did a dang fine job of it.

But beneath all his excitement lay a few key lessons about Microsoft. For one, the company understood that without a killer exclusive like Halo, the Xbox brand simply wasn't strong enough to justify its R&D expense. That understanding is a key reason that before Knights of the Old Republic came along, the Xbox was playfully known as "a Halo adaptor for your TV." With Xbox 360, Microsoft needed to march onto its next achievement: stealing the "exclusiveness" of the Grand Theft Auto series from Sony. So when Moore strode on stage at E3 2006 with a GTA IV tattoo and announced that Rockstar's game would release "day and date" with the PlayStation 3 version, he was basically bragging like Bush when he said "mission accomplished."

But not so fast, Microsoft. Last week Rockstar delayed GTA IV until at least February 2008, a move that quite literally could have stolen every single ounce of leverage you hoped to have. In fact, that announcement could have single-handedly put your very-real competitors, Sony and the PlayStation 3, in the driver's seat in the GTA IV race, for three reasons.

First off, Microsoft paid $50 million for exclusive downloadable episodes for GTA IV, an unprecedented amount for content that the company presumably hoped would release during the holidays and drive Xbox 360 sales. Well, now Microsoft has not only dropped $50 million for yet-to-be-determined content, but the company has lost all hope of that content boosting holiday sales, because GTA IV won't even be in stores until late Q1 or early Q2 next year.

Secondly, with the delay of GTA IV until after the holidays, Sony has more time to boost its PS3 install base, which, depending on sales, could entice Rockstar to create exclusive downloadable content for that system as well. So, not only does the lack of holiday-released episodes mean Microsoft could fail to widen its install-base gap, but the company could actually see Sony close that gap once GTA IV comes out, because after the holidays Sony could have the critical mass to justify special episodes for the PS3.

Third (and most speculative), Sony could see a PS3 sales boost because Microsoft is shooting its first-party wad early. Rumors earlier this year said Microsoft strategically chose to release Halo 3 in September to appease Rockstar and not give GTA IV any direct competition on the Xbox 360's sales charts. November has been Bungie's sweet spot for Halo release dates, so September always seemed early; with this GTA IV rumor as context, the Halo 3 release date made much more sense. But with GTA IV now delayed, Halo 3 (if it doesn't end up being delayed) will release two months before the holiday shopping season really kicks off, thereby enabling Sony to come out of the Turkey-Day gates with a stellar first-party lineup.

To say GTA IV drives console sales is akin to saying B.B. King can play the guitar. So with Microsoft banking so much on those exclusive episodes, not to mention GTA IV releasing at a time when the Xbox 360 holds an install-base lead over the PlayStation 3, Rockstar's announcement couldn't have been any worse. Does the delay favor Sony and its PlayStation 3? Not necessarily. But it surely doesn't do anything but harm to Microsoft's holiday-release strategy.

If Peter Moore were still at Microsoft, I have a sneaking suspicion he'd be seeking out a tattoo-removal specialist. Because today, that enthusiastic showing two E3s ago that his "mission" was "accomplished" now looks like a 20-something inking the name of a one-night-stand on his bicep

Summary: They give 3 reasons why the GTA 4 delay hurts MS and helps Sony.

remember you didn't write it? why? you posted it. you are aware that in one part it claims the 360 lost the system seller, then later says that ms released all it's first party too early, implying that the 360 had alot more than gta4. the author, and poster of the drivil might as well printed in bold "i even call my self a liar".

bioshock is comming out soon, very soon. then halo3. assins creed and many more.

what does the ps3 have? well they still have the waiting game. when gta4 does eventually release half the game will be on the ps3, the full game will be on the 360.

that "there is no such thing as a console exclusive" sig shows fanboy desperation. it is ms exclusive. if the game requires windows it is still an ms exclusive. the ps3 has flop. accept it and move on with your life.

doesn't that last point about halo 3 being released early work to microsofts advantage?  i mean, there's no way it's even speculation - releasing halo 3 in september is great for a number of reasons.  madden is always right up there as the biggest selling game each year - and when is it released?  august.  the most important thing is to have a game out in time by the holidays, not waiting until november to put it out.  do you have any idea how much marketing this opens up for halo - you'll be seeing advertisements for it from september well into january for each kid to go crazy over.  what's better, the 5 million or so preorders will be able to get their copies early and give bungie plenty of time to ship mass quantities to stores from october on for all the holiday shoppers.  and as others have already pointed out - if halo isn't enough of a reason for people to pick up a 360 this holiday - they're lineup puts sony's to shame and the multiplats wil certainly work to the 360's advantage all the way with it's lowered price tag.  if you're a sony fan, you better hope those $500 PS3's last throughout the season - because if they run out, you're going to find more people pissed off than those willing to fork out another $100 on a holiday budget.

wut the hell is dailygame.net?

also any month of the year is good to release Halo 3.....no matter what fanboys will rush to pick up this game. And MS alread has tehir trump card for NOvember: Mass Effect. Add the rumor that lost Odysessy is in October and they're fine without GTA 4. There are way too many games coming out this fall and holiday to help the 360 taht there's no need for GTA4.

I love how you think Sony's 1st party games are going to pull them throuh this holiday when one of them is already considered a FLOP. Plus Halo 3 alone will out sell Drake, Ratchet and Clank and Hevenlysword combined all by it's self. So what games do you have to look forward to for this PS3 holiday? Mr-XXX300

That's so typical. Whenever a Lem speaks about Halo3 they say how much it will sell but they never talk about the quality of the game.Ratchet and uncharted looks way better than Halo3. It might not sell more units but I'm pretty sure thsie titles will be better than Halo.

The delay will hurt Sony more then it will hurt Microsoft. M$ has more exclusives to hide behind, as well as a bigger fan base. And it dosen't matter when Halo 3 will be released, if you want it so bad that your willing to buy a 360 for it alone, it dosen't matter when its relesed. And it may even be a good thing that its coming in September,if Joe and Billy goes to Mike's house then that could make them want it as well. Word of mouth tends to spread faster then ads or reviews.

I don't think it's as bad for MS as it is for Sony. MS already has plenty of big games being released this year, including their biggest one - Halo 3. Their 08 line-up was not as good and was in need of more big games. Anyway the only console that's going to really benefit from this is the Wii. Both Sony and MS loose out from the delay because the more the Wii outsells them the less likely they will ever catch it.

AHAHHAHA one of those if it is on pc it is still MS exclusive fanboys:lol: i love how you listed multiplats besides halo as well, halo probably will be on pc next year like gears anyways though. im pretty sure casey said if it is on pc it is not exclusive, and this is system wars not console wars. and you get episodes that add more missions on 360, no extra land or anything, while ps3 gamers get 2 new IPs? i think i know which one id pick, too bad i dont have a ps3 though. also just because it is on windows doesnt mean you cant play it on other OS. and MS doesnt own PCs, they just make the OS, computers sell with linux on them too, and macs, etc.

also any month of the year is good to release Halo 3.....no matter what fanboys will rush to pick up this game. And MS alread has tehir trump card for NOvember: Mass Effect. Add the rumor that lost Odysessy is in October and they're fine without GTA 4. There are way too many games coming out this fall and holiday to help the 360 taht there's no need for GTA4.

mass effect will be a good game, but it wont get half the sales halo 3 will, not even close. and i dont think lost odyssey will manage to sell a million, its a japanese RPG and 360 is just about dead over there. the game wont sell in america like a lot of lems think it will

GTA IV killing PS3, Boosting 360 my friend.

EXACTLY. This is hurting Sony far more than MS, since Sony were relying on GTA4 to sell a lot of ps3 units this coming holiday.

i think they will have a longer holiday than the other consoles, GTA4, MGS4, and GT5 all early next year, and all system sellers. they should be fine. GT5 is the biggest system seller of them all, it outsold GTA last gen.

Mr-XXX300

Dude, it isn't the hardcore gamers like you that buy up systems. It's the causal gamers like me that make up the bulk of console sales. You know, the folks that own one system and buy maybe 4 or 5 games through the course of the year. Guess what? The Causals haven't went next gen yet, for the most part. The causals don't know that Lair flopped (Funny, a game that's not out yet has flopped...I guess I don't know how that works). Hell, the causals don't even know what Lair IS, for crying out loud.

The casuals are the PS2 owners that haven't gone next gen yet. The causals that buy Madden every time it comes out. They buy games like Ratchet and Clank becausejust pick it up and play it. Theybuy games like Gran Turismo, GTA, and Metal Gear. They don't play Bioshock, Lair, orHeavenlySword. They've never heard of Assasin's Creed or Blue Dragon. They care about sports titles, platformers, racing games, and FPS, to a smaller extent. You hardcore video gamers think that the gaming world revolves around you because you spent all of this time in the vacuum chamber that is GameSpot, talking to other hardcore gamers. You guys are but a small percentage of the gaming population. You guys mean NOTHING to console sales.

Mark this down on your calendar right now: The PS3 will overtake the Xbox 360 in console sales before this generation is over.

[QUOTE="GarchomPro"]Remember i didnt write this.

Summary: They give 3 reasons why the GTA 4 delay hurts MS and helps Sony.

hobbit93

cowws these days

There's no reason to laugh. You are just showing you're the bigger fanboy here. Besides, he didn't even write that, it came from somewhere else. And that article has legitimate reasons why GTA IV being delayed hurts the 360 more, you just clearly don't want to face them. You didn't even read it I'd bet.

I never said it will... hell, if blue dragon can get 200,000 in japan, Lost odyssesy can proably get 300,000. And they're more peopel anticpating this game then u think.I think it does have chance to reach a million worldwide. Hell Forza 2 did it and it's not even like by that much of teh xbox community. actually i think BD sold more than that in japan, but either way, that game is very reminicent of dragon quest, and dragon quest is more popular in japan than final fantasy is. so no i think lost odyssey wont get more than blue dragon in japan. im pretty sure forza 1 sold over a million on xbox one, and i think a NFS game sold over a million on 360, so as for xbox community not liking forza or racers, or whatever you are trying to say, thats not true. mass effect, 2 million in US? maybe, after a year or something it will probably gain sales gradually, but halo is gonna blow up straight away and sell like gears of war, IMO more.
we dont know when GT5 comes out... if u got a link for that let me know. GTA4 will sell on both systems. the only one is MGS4 and one game isnt enough. I'm not dissing the ps3 cuz ima get one next year but if u think this will qualify as a longer holiday, ur sadly mistaken. killaj2786
i dont need to give you a link, stop being lazy and look it up yourself, what did he say? early 08, maybe later if sony says so, and i never said GTA4 wont sell on both:| MGS4 and GT5 are bigger system sellers than lost odyssey and mass effect, hell GT5 is probably a bigger seller than both of those by itself.

Lemmings are already complaining about not having enough money to buy half the games they want this winter. Losing a single title doesn't hurt that much. GTA would have been a huge system seller for Sony and M$, but at least M$ still has plenty of big hitters left in their line up.

So you took someoneelses opinion, posted it as you're opinion and now that I wasted time reading the wall of text I am supposed to agree with both of you. It hurts Sony more because Sony needs the games more right now and GTA is a recognizable game with the casual buyers (much like Halo 3 is for MS) and Sony would love to get that game out on its shelves, multi platform or not.

Bottom line.

It does not matter to MS or Sony if it gets delayed. The company this will hurt most is R*.

and also, just because one game gets delayed does not mean that a load of people are going to suddelny drop their xboxes and run out and buy a ps3. not that the would as the ps3 is ridiculously priced.

There's no reason to laugh. You are justshowing you're the bigger fanboy here. Besides, he didn't even write that, it came from somewhere else.

Well, there's one reason to laugh...as the person that chalked the TS as, "cowws these days". What makes me laugh is what passes for reasonable debate on Gamespot. "Oh, the PS3 won't sell because it's expensive." "Oh, the PS3 has no good exclusives." "Oh, this system will do this for this reason." None of it really makes any sense. The reason? Because we've got a bunch of kids on Gamespot saying things like it's truth. Kids with no notion of how the business or marketing world works. You think the PS3 is expensive when people are buying up ever 400 and $500 iPhone they can find? And $500 is too expensive for a video game / multi media center? Give me a freakin' break! These folks on here have no concept of how important Brand loyalty and trust is in the consumer world.

As a casual gamer (you know, the bulk of the video gamer population), here is how I see this generation of gaming. Keep in mind, out of boredom at work, I spend time on gaming sites to kill time and to entertain. I also enjoy video games, so it gives me a way to keep up on new games, etc.

Xbox 360: I did my research online before buying a system, much like any parent will when researching a purchase for their kids. Okay, the reasonably intelligent parents, at least. What's the first thing you find out when you put Xbox 360 into ANY search engine? The hardware is crap. Casual gamers don't know about the Falcon chip. They aren't going to put THAT much research into it. They're going to see 'Hardware Failure' on Google (or Amazon too...Xbox has lousy reviews there)and they'll stop there. I'm not buying something for myself, or my kids, that is likely to break down in a relatively short period of time. Why do you guys think Toyota overtook Ford and GM in North American auto sales? Let's not forget to mention that most adults like myself, working in the real world, have plenty of experience with Microsoft products. Let's just say that doesn't often paint them in the most flattering light.

Wii: Man, I can't find one of these things ANYWHERE. If I find one, I'm scooping it up because as rare as they are, there must be something to it!

PS3: Well, it's pretty expensive, but man does it have some neat bells and whistles. I've got an HD-TV...this blu-ray stuff sounds alright. I've already / my kid already has a PS2, so my/their old games will still play, I/they'll get the new version of the games they already love to play, the conroller is the same...everyone leaves happy. Yeah, we might just wait until the price is lower. The kid's / my PS2 can last a little longer.

Is it any wonder PS2 outsells Xbox 360 and PS3? Yeah, it's cheaper. Yeah, it's got one heck of an established library. It's the gem of the video game console world, quite frankly. When those folks (us casuals) get ready to make the leap to next gen (and when the price is right), the PS3 is going to fly off the shelves.

You sheltered Hardcore gamers only see things through the narrow world perspective of the Hardcore gamer. You guys live in this Gamespot vaccuum, talking to other Hardcores. You guys see gaming through this weird prism that most of us do not see. We don't care about Bioshock, Mass Effect, Lair, Heavenly Sword, or any of those other arcane games that the Hardcores scoop up. Until I started researching Video games at work, I had never heard of Metal Gear Solid or God of War, or Elder Scrolls, or any of the other hyped big name games. My point is, you guys have NO concept of what really sells systems. Hell, most of you have never attended a college course (let alone hold a degree), so you have very little concept of business and marketing practices that work in the real world. You have very little concept of consumer trends. Basically what I'm saying is that I have very little respect for anything that is said on these forums because I don't believe many of you have the requisite real-world knowledge to back up any of your half-cocked assertions.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

You give casuals very little credit, don't you? I'd wager and say that casuals are probably better in their gaming consumer habits than hardcores. I mean, look at the Xbox fanboys. They're scooping up lousy hardware for a couple of good games. I don't know about you, but that's not what I call being a discriminating consumer. All you Lemmings (is that the correct term) have to say to Microsoft is, "Thank you sir, may I have another?"

Yeah, a casual (who likely never owned an Xbox) is going to see that logo and thing, "Every version of Madden is available on my PS2, but since it says Xbox 360 on the commercial, that must mean that Madden won't be on the Playstation anymore." Is that what you really think of causals? Seriously, only Republicans are that dense.

WOW, I guess that college diploma I got must be my imagination. You make a lot of assumptions about hardcore games, most of which are untrue. I have a lot of hardcore gaming friends, the vast majority have college degrees in many varying fields. These include, but aren't limited to, education, computer engineering, counter-terrorism, international relations and telecommunications. I am a parent and am friends with many parents. The majority of non-gaming parents don't care much about what systems can and can't do. They buy a product based on brand recogniction and price. The two most popular picks for them lately have been the Wii and PS2. Don't assume you are the only one here with any credible knowledge of the gaming industry and what makes it really work. If you have as little experience with gaming as you claim then how can you reaslitically claim to understand the field better then a hardcore gamer. Finally, if you are arguing on the SW forums you aren't a casual gamer, you are now hardcore. Casual gamers don't care enough to argue about this nonsense.

For someone who "brags" about having better business sense then these so called kids, you should did yourself a favor by comparing the iPhone to a PS3 for basic economic spending. In fact you couldn't be more wrong sir, there is a huge, fundamental difference between the two items set price versus value.

And I can answer it in one word: competition. If you can't figure it out, well you shouldn't have posted.

Now that your arrogant yet flawed statement has been debunked, please continue as I doubt you will apologize to everyone here.

That is all, please resume folks.
