in a new part of the interview with Guerrilla Games about Killzone 2 on the Dutch website GameKings, Guerrilla talks about the graphical aspects of the game. Guerrilla talks about how their engine works and what they can do better in the future.

Some highlights from the article:

  • CPU, SPU belasting (ze gebruiken de PS3 niet voor 100%)
    (They don't use 100% of the PlayStation 3 his power)

  • Audio effecten zijn erg goed. Als iemand achter een muur staat, en hij gaat praten, dan hoor je dat het anders klinkt dan wanneer iemand zonder objecten om zich heen praat. Audio is helemaal surround, 7.1 compressed sound.
  • Meer dan 230 lampen in een 'vieuw' (beeld).
    (More than 230 lights into one screen)
  • Lights of the Helgast eye's reflects with walls.
    (Lichten van de Helgast ogen reflecteren of zijn te zien op de muren).
  • De Engine (technologie) is ontwikkeld tijdens het maken van het spel. De Engine is dus tijdens de ontwikkeling van Killzone 2, doorontwikkeld.
    (The Engine of the game is being developed when they were working on Killzone 2).
  • Guerrilla zegt: 'We kunnen nog veel meer uit de engine (en uit de PlayStation 3) halen dan we nu al hebben gedaan. En dit zal ook zeker in toekomstige projecten gebeuren'.

I remember seeing a pic of a dead helghast, with the light of his eyes reflecting off a wall, i was like DAM thats awesome....GG are really taking this game to the next level for consoles, from ligthing/animations/effects/atmostphere, etc.

And FFS Sony, advertise the **** out of this game. Times running out.

Ya know what i really find funny, if they aren't using 100% of the systems power, why don;t they use the surpless to render the game in 1080p? ya know, 1920x1080 pixels not upscaled 720p. Also why dont they get the games running at 60fps? not the usual 30? Also why don't they up the AF and AA levels a litte or increase the texture resolution?

Console devs are so funny lol.

lol, is that what you really believe? im no expert but im pretty sure resolution isn't a big technical issue to achieve, rather the hardware simply wont do it and remain playable.

Its like all this gears crap, 2 looks better than 1, no argument. This isn;t so much that the devs used more of the xbox power, its more they optimized and improved the game engine. I bet gears 2 used about as much power as gears 1 did.

Doesn't work that way, over time better tools and neat tricks are used to FURTHER push the system, for its time and resources, K2 is doing the best i can NOW, further down the line, with more experience and NEW tricks..better results will be shown. Its all about better optimisation. For what they are pulling off, its most likely the best they can do AT THE MOMENT, untill those REASON i've stated are improved apon. GG are just making a statement and observation from what they see and have done so far and how much more they can do. Time is also a factor, if the game was DELAYED....we probably could see more done to the game. Its not about resolution or added AA, but being able to add more things, detail and working around obsticales that at the beginning made a problem. Good way of doing this is balancing things, decreasing some things while bumping up others. Believe it or not, some sequals have less poly's than the game before it..but thanks to great tricks and new tools, it can look just as good.

It only took them 5 years to make KZ2, I guess 2014 will be a good year for the PS3 thenmuffin200
K2 didn't start in 04, the developments started in late 05 early 06.....when that CGI trailer was shown, GG had basically just got started planning K2.

So KZ 2 has "only" been in development for just over 3 years, that seems to be the average for many of this gen's games. It was just revealed so damn early.

LOL, true...but thats why they are 1st party devs. Sony will always support them. But they also have the experience NOW and TOOLS...so things will have gotten cheaper.

Exactly....SONY needed something EPIC to show at the time, since the 360 was about to debut and the PS3 was long off...;) they needed fans to keep waiting for the PS3, instead of jumping ship.

Nope, since the tools are all done and built, its all about tweaking them....and improving. GG have much more experience now...with the NEW EDGE tools and the hardware...be much quicker. But that depends on when they start a new project.

Ya know, as a PS3 owner it kinda gets to me you guys are ok with getting ripped off. You swallow all this crap from devs about power and graphics etc etc, fact is PS3 is doing stuff i saw last gen on PC.If a true multiplat dev came out, one making a game on all systems and spoke of PS3 amazing power i'd shut up. Fact is they are not, infact they are doing the opposite. Killzone looks great, animations are some of the best i have seen. Other parts, most of it infact make me laugh though. Texture res, draw distance, the blur lol. I could go on. They cheat the eye into thinking its seeing great graphics when technically they are pretty ordinary.

If this game can match 1920x1080, 4xAA and 8xAF with 60 fps i'll say PS3 is the powerhouse its said to be.

All you diluded PS3 fanboys flame away, im sick of your crap tbh. I live in the real world and know what i see on my PS3.

I could be wrong but Killzone 2 runs on EDGE tools which will be available to all 16 of Sonys in house game developers. But not third party devs. So we should be seeing Killzone 2 quality graphics as standard soon enough on PS3. I expect stuff like God Of War 3 to piss all over anything ever seen on PC or home consoles though. Killzone 2 is just the start of a new era.

And don't mention Crysis, I think Killzone 2 is far better looking and is 100% better optimised than that piece of crap.

thats right....also, the GOW developers also helped GG build some of the tools and got knowledge from them, among other developers (i think it was naughty dog, not sure)...for killzone 2. All about team work, its why K2 looks so dam good.

GTFO, these are consoles, not machines that can get updated every month...they are fixed. But for a console game it is DAM impressive, hell you have some claiming it looks better than crysis, thanks to the art design and lighting/animations that give it a unique look. NO DUH, it won't be anything like the top PC titles...common sense. But killzone 2 sets its own ground and sticks out. as for ripped off? you know whats being ripped off? Buying a PC and upgrading constantly, having to optimise, worry about virus's faults and compatibility issues. ALL that ***** for an expensive PC, that isn't primary for games. you PC guys go through all that for extra graphics that isn't worth it.

hmm, maybe i missjudged the purpose of this thread. With all the threads ranting on about PS3's untouched super powers that beat ever pc card/cpu on the market lately its understandable.

Look, let me say this, the devs of Killzone have done a great job, KZ2 will be the best looking game on PS3. I'm not disputing that. Just sick and tired of moronic console fans thinking Ps3 is a super computer. I game, im not a fanboy, i play wii, PS3 and PC, i would buy a 360 tomorrow if my wife would let me.

QFT. I mean look at rainbow six vegas 2, gears of war 2, and crysis: warhead. All the developers did was just enhance the look of them slightly, contiune on with the story line, and throw in a couple of new weapons and environments. And those games came out in less then 2 years. (didnt crysis: warhead come out 7-8 months after crysis)

My bad, didn't mean to be harsh, just thought you were those typical PC guys. We all know the PS3 isn't some SUPER COMPUTER, but its design is pretty impressive, the CELL that is, for console standards its doing wonders and really shines (ammount of things on screen, graphics, etc), even against the best PC titles. Its not always about brute power and graphics. One can also favor killzone 2 more due to the art design and overall look and feel of the game. Just depends on your tastes. Also, not many have played Crysis, on SUPER HIGH, with MODS. even on high setting the game isn't perfect.

Im not a great fan of crysis graphics from a taste point of view, its technically amazing and jaw dropping though. If i was to list the top 5 graphical games i have seen this gen crysis may not even make it. I do apreciate artistic style too. Just ask me what i think of Valkyria Chronicles, looks simply stunning.

translation from a gaf member. - their goal: cinematic experience. lot's of post-processing. they want an analogue look - motion blur per pixel, - noise, AA - spu's are the key for optimal performance on the PS3: Deferred Rendering - they often use all six: for full fire fights, physics, particles, mp3 streams, 7.1 audio, lighting - they also help to render effects. 40% extra speed thanx to the spu's - guns have to feel realsitic, reactions have to be realistic. hit impact system. every bullet has an effect on the surrounding or people in it - stacked animations with real time rendered ragdoll.. and yep, blow heads off... - every polygon has mass and material - real time ray tracing - holes are not a flat image of a hole - collision detection of small particles, even sparks.. icing on the cake. will often go unnoticed while playing by a lot of people. - 5.1 ambient mp3 streams that rotate when you rotate. on top of that stereo music, 3d sound effects, voices in the right positioning, sound filtering.. all in 7.1 uncompressed sound. - extreme amount of lightsd. 230 lights in this screen (he's showinng the screen). they are proud of this level. impressive - the robot alone has 8 lights - tech was developed while making the game. - they think they can go further and beyond what they're doing with killzone 2 AND they will show us in the future!!

There's nothing wrong with the draw distance in KZ2 and the blur, and every dev out there trying to use best effects that use minimum resources to make the games look good, they cheat the eye ? lol is that what every dev tring to do ? also there's no point in making 1080P native games in consoles , it's not like the hardware can't render it, it just they will have to sacrifice lot's of Vram to render every extra pixel ========== If this game can match 1920x1080, 4xAA and 8xAF with 60 fps i'll say PS3 is the powerhouse its said to be. That's over kill and consoles never and maybe will never do that, only PCs with dual GPUs with 1-2 years older games can do that

The PS3 had really better have a 10+ year life cycle if you expect to wait for Guerilla to make another game for it.

really the only thing limiting them is money. i believe it took 12 million (correct me if i'm wrong) to make kz2. thats alot of money i must say lol but i look forward to their future games, hopefully we could get a preqeul to kz1 and have a helguast(sp) campaign.

if anyone questions kz2's blur their a fanboy simple as that. this might just be the first console game to do blur the right way. kz2 use of blur is to make it look more movie like so how anyone could argue about the blur in this game is beyond me.

The PS3 had really better have a 10+ year life cycle if you expect to wait for Guerilla to make another game for it.Shafftehr

For someone with a Planescape: Torment sig and avi you sure made an ignorant post. Spending 4+ years on developing engine + game is common but once you have the engine finished you don't have to spend so much time in development and can use the extra time to get the most out of the engine. See what Epic did with Gears of War 2 for future reference.

really the only thing limiting them is money. i believe it took 12 million (correct me if i'm wrong) to make kz2. thats alot of money i must say lol but i look forward to their future games, hopefully we could get a preqeul to kz1 and have a helguast(sp) campaign.cobragt4
i heared it took them 40-60 million to make the game O_O, if thats true then the game better be good!

what is real time ray tracing .. seems cool.

yes they can get more out of ps3 same with 360 it's just dev experience/evolved code.

I hope that includes a better multiplayer system.. Because the PS3's multiplayer service is actually a real minus compared to my experiences with Xboxlive. And this is coming from a PC gamer, I own niether system.. This is just my experience with teh systems through my friends.

Ya know what i really find funny, if they aren't using 100% of the systems power, why don;t they use the surpless to render the game in 1080p? ya know, 1920x1080 pixels not upscaled 720p. Also why dont they get the games running at 60fps? not the usual 30? Also why don't they up the AF and AA levels a litte or increase the texture resolution?

Console devs are so funny lol.

I dont' think that's how it works. At this point, they are probably running the game as effeciently as possible with all the system resources. Over time, and towards the far end of the PS3's lifecycle, devs will be able to more effeciently use the system.

EDIT: Excuse me, "even more effeciently use the system" :P

Money and time are a problem for developers.

lol, is that what you really believe? im no expert but im pretty sure resolution isn't a big technical issue to achieve, rather the hardware simply wont do it and remain playable.

Its like all this gears crap, 2 looks better than 1, no argument. This isn;t so much that the devs used more of the xbox power, its more they optimized and improved the game engine. I bet gears 2 used about as much power as gears 1 did.

Um yes money and time is an issue. If they had unlimited budget and an unlimited amount of time they could make the game look better. Deadlines and budget factor into a game man.
